True Facts About Science

I was never very good at science. You have to have some focus to do well there, and I was always getting lost in color and shape and story and wandering off. But I can pay attention for four minutes, one of the many reasons I like Ze Frank’s True Facts You Tube series.

Here, watch this one on chameleons. (SpitTake Alert: Do not drink anything while you watch.)

Or if you’d rather, here’s one on the mantis shrimp:

Or this one on the katydid, which is really a conversation between the katydid and evolution. There’s some swearing.

The one on the fruit bat is excellent but dirty (I have a thing for fruit bats because of Pratchett). The one on the land snail is downright pornographic. Okay, most of them are borderline perv. Oh, watch the one about owls. That’s a good one.

Science. Yeah.

Me too. That was a scarring experience…I don’t think I can ever feed ducks again.

Are these kid-friendly at all? Because I have a son who loves science, animals and youtube, but he’s 11. I don’t want to start him off on a kid-friendly one just to have him progress to the duck, land snail and fruit bat (we’re homeschooling in part because the kids in upper elementary school are developing dating habits when our boys are still at the “girls have cooties” stage. That and my son hated science because he got razzed about it so much. Yes, the same one that loves it now. Peer pressure sucks).

They’re kind of PG-13. Snarky and funny but a lot of sex jokes.

Ze Frank is all kinds of fabulous. My only issue with him is that there isn’t more of his work available ;-)

Yay science. When it was taught well, it stuck, when it wasn’t, it didn’t. But I like trivia, so science trivia sticks as much as any other.

Turns out there’s a non-digital life to be had. Went out and got some. Oh, the rollercoaster of energy and faigue cycling through me. Hence my absence here. Now woe is me – “If I hadn’t seen such riches I could live with being poor” – from “Sit Down” by James.

Hi Argh people.

Nice science snark! But the footage . . . wow, I didn’t know those animals could do things like that. (-: Ze Frank has a thing for eyes, doesn’t ze? Gotta admit, those are amazing eyes.

Did anything happen with your email updates? I was getting notices in my inbox each time you posted something new, and then I stopped getting them. I came to Argh Ink to realize I missed a bunch! Tried to re-subscribe, but it said I was already subscribed. Hmm…Wonder what happened.

I haven’t gotten an email in several weeks, since a post about Anne Stuart’s 40 days/40 years celebration, but I’ve been too busy reading that and making a quilt for my daughter’s graduation to pay attention. I just realized today that it had been too long for the usual sort of hiatus.
I tried to resubmit my email, but I got a message saying that email feeds weren’t available. Tried the rss feed and got a page of code.

Is it me, or does the naked mole rat look a lot like the ROUS’s from Princess Bride? Only without the hair.

The Mantis Shrimp is amazing and so cool, and they have one at the monterey bay aquarium out here in CA. So my boyfriend and after being huge fans of ZeeFrank are making a point to see the crazy little bastards. I would however like to say as a female of our species the frog one really freaks me out.
