Here’s the Problem
Feb82012
I’m trying to figure out how to do this so only some people can read it because some people get these posts as e-mails. I can easily put the title after the (more), but the people who get e-mails will get it all and that’s not fair. I thought about putting Spoilers: Do Not Read in the subject head, but for you guys, that’s like a big button that says Do Not Push. Although the three of us watched it again tonight, and I was really afraid I’d ruined it because I’d oversold it and talked about the ending, and they still didn’t see it coming. Also, they agreed with me on everything. We’re going to watch it again this week. The writer is a genius. I know, I know. I just don’t know how to tell some of you but not all of you. ARGH. (But it’s so, so good.)

Well please tell me. I just read a book that makes me want to put a curse on the author and the librarian who recommended it. And mostly because of the truly horrible ending. I need this just to get that taste out of my mouth.
You can post it as a comment on my blog or have L send it to me. She and Alastair both have my email address.

Oh pleeeeaaaaze do tell me! Yesterday after I’d read your post I came back again and again to see if you’d given us a hint or more clues to direct us towards whatever it is.
I guess it’s a movie? I don’t mind to be spoilt, especially since I’m known to forget so easily. I can read almost every mystery again and again, I always forget who did it after a short time
I’d be happy to receive an e-mail, but whatever works is fine. Though your guess with the “do not read” = “Do READ” is quite correct. You know that there’s research that our brain cannot actually understand the “NOT”, so instead whenever you/me/we read or hear “do NOT do something”, our brain gets the order “DO something…”.
I find this very intriguing especially since I’ve tried it on several occasions, like yesterday when dh had forgotten to tell me that there was only a tiny drop of gas left in the car and we had to rush to an appointment through horrible weather conditions. My mantra was NOT “not let the car stop in the middle of the tunnel” but “we will reach the gas station allright” … it worked

We actually talked about that research at a pit bull training I went to. It was so difficult to get my shelter’s PR person (ok, impossible) to understand that we needed to say the positive things about pit bulls (they’re amazing family dogs, they’re super athletic, they’re big cuddlers, etc) and not use the word “not” to address negative comments. Whenever she’d be interviewed and a media person would ask “aren’t pits fighting dogs?” she’d say “they’re not all fighting dogs” instead of “Many pit bulls are wonderful family pets” even though we showed her the research showing no one notices the “not” in an interview.
Sorry, sore subject that I’m still bitter about.

I agree whole-heartedly! Pit Bulls are WONDERFUL pets! I had one named Curious George of the Jungle but had to give him up when I moved to Hawaii.
He was just a big puppy at heart – NOT a single mean bone in him.
I absolutely hated to give him up.

(-: Can you link to it, too? My solution would have been to put it on the rollover of a picture that says: You Know That Movie? Rollover to Find Out the Title. (-: But some people rollover things by accident.

Ooops, I see people saying look for the link at the bottom of the post.

After reading Krissie’s post on Reinventing Fabulous I think I know, and if I’m right I have to wait because there’s no way I can get my hands on it. Knowing the ending is a reversal won’t ruin it for me, however. I’m one of those awful people who skims to the end of books to see how things turn out, and then I can go back and read it and enjoy the writing without being tense. Maybe that’s why I like audiobooks so much; they make that kind of cheating difficult.

Yes, how do I find the Forums??
BTW, apropos of nothing at, except y’all are writers and will appreciate this little tale.
I have to do some revisions to a conference paper and the final has to be in on Friday. So, today (puh-lenty of time!) I decide I should probably look at the reviewers’ comments and critiques.
Here’s the beginning of the first review:
“This paper should be proofreaded. It contains errors in punctuation and spellings.”
NO, those are not my typos… After that, it was hard to take the review very seriously. My boss (and co-author) just shook his head.
Gaack. Something about glass houses and stones sound familiar???
(And, of course, the usual requests for a deeper discussion of several topics in the paper — but it’s already at its full 5-pg allowable max. Get these every time — my boss just laughed again and shook his head.)

To find the forums, google “Cherry Forums.” When you get there, click on the middle option in the “other media” box. Select “spoiler,” and there you are.

Will the region 2 DVD wok in North America?
On February 8, 2012 at 7:07 pm merry said...
There shouldn’t be a problem – I think it’s universal. Among other dvds, I got Season 1 of Sherlock and the Blu-Ray set of all the Harry Potters from Amazon UK, and they play perfectly on my US purchased Blu-Ray dvd player. It’s often less expensive to buy British productions from Amazon UK, as well.
On February 8, 2012 at 7:19 pm merry said...
I should say “regional” vs. “universal”. Someone with more knowledge about this than I have may be able to explain it clearly. Anyone?
On February 8, 2012 at 8:58 pm merry said...
Oh, damn. I answered the question forgetting I was here in “NO SPOILERS” land instead of The Forums. Sorry. Maybe I’ll break the blog and no one else will be able to read the above post. Or, someone could just remove the post. Sorry, again.

Ummmmm…UK/European regional DVDs will not play on (most) DVDs in the US. And vice versa.
Theoretically, all manufacturers build systems to work anywhere. It is software (embedded software called “firmware”) which blocks your NorthAmerican DVD from playing in Europe. You can buy “region-free” or “code-free” systems, which only mean, that the software block isn’t there. Like if you play DVDs on your laptop, the software allows you to switch regions something like 5 times, then blows out and you are stuck with whichever system you last switched to. For a while you could download software to make your laptop region-free but Big Business blocked it via international suits.
I have a friend who works for Sony here in Europe and he gave me the following tip. A number of the super cheap DVD players (no-name) may be region free, because, to save a buck or two in production, the manufacturer skips the firmware setting phase.
I bought a no-name portable DVD in the States (Best Buy), lugged it back to Germany and hooked it up to my TV (which will playback more than one system — for all the same reasons listed above). I have my US/Canadian DVDs in one storage, the UK/European in another.
But then my hubby and I went on vacation, I took the little portable DVD player, cable, and my set of US films. But discovered that the little sucker will playback European as well, ’cause I had mixed a European one in with the US films. So my friend was right, super cheapies are often multisystem, but most folks don’t know, because they will never have the need to test it out.
So, here’s a plus side globalization — it’s cheaper to produce systems that cover everything, then do a twiddle on a chip, than to put different guts in. And, if you know how to do it, you can capitalize on it.
Sorry for the dissertation, but for those who travel back and forth, it’s worth knowing about. Hope this helps someone.
(And, yes, I am a nerd…in case you were wondering…)

I am one of those people who if I think it will be a bad ending I’ll check around until I find someone who will tell me the end before I’ll read/watch it, or I won’t read/watch it al all, so I’m willing to go to the Cherry Forum to see what we’re talking about here.
Thanks!
