Pinteresting Idea
Jan262012
So Mollie, who is a genius, emailed me and said, “Are you on Pinterest?” And I was because Lani and inkgrrl had harassed me until I joined. I was pretty much just sticking stuff up there without a plan, but Mollie said, “You should put up a board for Liz.”
Now that was interesting: A board to stick pictures on that inspired me for Lavender’s Blue. I told her to give me twenty-four hours and then I’d get back to her, and I’ve been working on it for about an hour now, and I’m liking it. It doesn’t replace collage for me, but boy howdy does it give a picture of the book. The only problem is, I can’t find where I found some of my pictures. So I’m hoping if I post them in this blog post, I can put them on the Lavender’s Blue Pinterest board. Because really? This is easy brainstorming and a great way to get into Liz’s world.
For example, this is Liz. She’s blonder than this and she’s wearing the sunglasses Molly gave her, but this is Liz. Great book cover potential, too.

And this is the Your Name Here Bear:

Here’s the bridesmaid’s dress Liz says is going to make everybody look like a float in the Rose Bowl parade (all the bridesmaids are stacked, so those flowers are going to be . . . prominent).

Okay, enough about me. If you’re hesitant to collage, you can definitely pin. Pinterest: for collage-aphobics everywhere.
Edited to add: It worked! I can pin from the blog. Here’s the Lavender’s Blue Pinterest Board.

I am a Pinterest addict. So much good stuff on that site!
Just an FYI that Pinterest not only lets you pin photos from blog, but you can also upload photos directly. (Click the “Add” button at the top of the Pinterest page and “Upload a Pin” comes up as an option.) This, of course, does not solve the “where did I get this photo from in the first place” problem, but it does get the photo online. And, other pinners are often very helpful at identifying the original sources of photos.

EXCELLENT! Exactly what I need to know. Thank you!

Nothing but good Pinterest ahead!
And the pinnings are everything I envisioned for Lavender’s Blue.

I’ve been seeing the word bandied about, but what is it for, other than posting pictures with captions? And why does one need an invite, rather than the site simply letting you sign up?
On January 26, 2012 at 11:30 pm Jenny said...
I have no idea why you need a invitation. If you want one, just tell me. I have your e-mail here on the dashboard.
What it’s for is to park pictures of things you find on the net so you can share them with others. Or in my case, so I can remember what I liked.

They require an invitation in the beginning to manage bandwidth to prevent crashing the site. Same with Ravelry in the beginning.

Back in the day, Facebook was also invite only. A lot of social sites start out this way because it gets people by word of mouth, creates exclusivity and also keeps traffic manageable in the beginning so they can iron out the kinks.
Pintrest actually has an option for you to request a login if you don’t have the connections – that’s how I got on there after following the Bloggess’s link and losing most of an afternoon. LOL

I had just joined a week or so ago, and have already become an addict. (I saw this post after I blogged about it today.) I’ve been putting up dream home type of ideas–all of the construction stuff I want to do. As a result, I landed on a blog (desire to inspire) which is not only terrific, but has loads of great links to other fabulous design blogs, and I’ve been pinning photos like crazy. If I’d had to save all of those to my computer and then make sure I kept the link back to the original? I’d have spent hours. Already, it’s saved me on a couple of things that I knew I wanted, didn’t realize it was out there to be had pre-made, so that’s a bonus.
Plus, the craft ideas alone that I can now pin in one place *with* the ability to go back to the original instructions? Huge plus.
And I’m going to story-board/collect images there for the rewrite. And the next book I’m already sort of thinking about. I’m too lazy to collage, but this, I can do.

I love, love, love Pinterest, and I have a board all ready to receive pics from my WIP. (-: Just haven’t gotten to the point where I want to look for pics, yet. I’m so not visual.
The sourcing is a problem; I often find that “we can’t see any pictures on this page” but if I right click on a page, I can often pin an image opened in a new window. However, a lot of those images are sourced as “google.com” so . . . I find it safest to just copy the URL from the real page onto the Pinterest comments. Those URLs often also contain a lot of interesting commentary on the things I’m interested in.
Me personally, I’m actively collecting ideas for a porch (and I want to do this for all the rooms of my house that need remodeling), and I’ve put together a New Year’s Quiz using images, and I’m in the middle of a big “Elementary School in the States” project for work. How many times can I say love in one post(-:? Love x100.
I think you need an invite to help keep the spambots out. Real people don’t often invite spammers to join their new favorite site.

I had that problem on Chrome, but not on Firefox. Maybe try switching browsers?

LOL, I just switched to Chrome. OK, I’ll try Firefox when I get some downtime to install it and get the swing of the learning curve.

Oh, great. I’m sitting here drinking a miserable instant soup inna cup for lunch at my desk, and the first picture that comes up is the most sumptuous burger and chips I’ve ever seen. Thanks ever so. I could go off you, you know…

On January 27, 2012 at 3:24 pm LilyC said...
Like I’d ever go off you. You just write about food so evocatively that I can get addicted without even knowing what it tastes like. For years I had no idea what a potsticker was, I just knew I wanted one. And now I can feel a quest for the perfect burger coming on. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. You rock, Crusie!

Yeah, I saw that burger, and because I’m in Japan and because I’m just neurotic about a bunch of things, if I want to indulge I’d have to: make whole wheat buns (OK, healthier anyway), grind pork in the food processor (I can get leanish pork for 118/100 g, but fatty, watery hamburger is something like 138/100g!), buy shoestring potatoes and coat them in olive oil and season salt for oven fries, make the ketchup (oh, wait, it’s OK, I can buy ketchup, LOL!) (have to make the season salt, though) . . . . But you know what? It’d be worth it!! (LOL, and that is probably enough whine with my cheese today.)

Oh my gosh! I discovered Pinterest last Spring and it quickly became one of my number one web addictions. I’m a pin whore! And, swear to god!, I thought about you and your collages when I figured out how it worked. I love it! I use it for party planning, a lot. I create boards just for specific occasions. I used it when I was decorating my office. And then I have 50 other random boards for all the other bagillion pins that I can’t resist. So fun! Enjoy.

I’m new to Pinterest, but within after about a week of “what the hell do I do with this?” I had the epiphany “this is like Crusie’s collage!” (I am SO not crafty). I started a board for Book 2 so I can keep all my stuff there as I free-think about it here and there. It’s definitely addictive. Am off to look for everone…

I’ve been on Pinterest since it was an infant, and I spend waaay too much time there. On the other hand, I have a board for a future garden filled with ideas and I can just use the photo to instantly find out what it is, the care it needs, and so on. It’s like subscribing to fifty garden magazines without the clutter.

I found you on Pinterest last night before reading this and stalked, erm followed you. ;p As I sat there finding stuff for my SIL’s wedding board, the “new pin” notifier kept popping up… can I assume there will be a LOT of crochet references in Lavenders Blue? LOL
On January 27, 2012 at 3:08 pm Jenny said...
Oh, there are notifiers? I wondered why I kept getting these e-mails from Pinterest saying people had repinned. I’m still new here.
No, there’s no collage in Lavender’s Blue. That was a different board.
On January 28, 2012 at 11:40 am Bonnie C said...
You can go into settings and turn off the email notifiers if they bug you. What I was referring to is when you’re on the main “pinned you follow” page there’s a “recent activity” column on the left and that’s where it tells u how many new pins from you and people you follow have popped up since the last time you refreshed the page.
