I guess I can see that. Love the different sensibility on the European covers. Also, cake is never a bad thing.

I’m so proud of myself – I knew right away which book it was! I suppose that means I spend too much time re-reading instead of doing things… like writing…

Because the cupcake is funnier.

You know, if we ever do a sequel, we’re gonna need cupcake demons.

Yay! They finally came up with a smart title for one of your books! It’s even a nice pun because “Von allen guten Geistern verlassen” is a German expression (“Left by all the good spirits/ghosts”) meaning somebody really lost his mind. Usually you can’t even guess which book they translated because the titles are so exchangeable, for instance the German title for “Maybe This Time” translates “To Bed without a Kiss”.

Oh, you just pronounce it like it’s spelled ;o)

On January 25, 2012 at 9:28 am German Chocolate Betty said...

Okay, @colognegrrl, for you and me it may be obvious, for others not so.

So, @Eve and all others: it sounds like this (more or less):

(von) (allen) (guten) (Geistern) (geküsst)
fun ahl-en goo-tenn gai-stern geh-coo-st.

(The umlaut — dots over the “u” — in “geküsst” has no equivalent sound in English, but this would get you to “understandable” with most Germans…!)

Yeah, this one’s pretty good — most of the time when they create the German titles, be they for books or films, they come up with totally suck-y ones, like colognegrrl points out. This one’s not too bad.

Thanks for the original expression, Colognegrrl. I felt sure it wasn’t just plucked out of the air.

I love this. It made me smile, and yeah I guessed right. I’d love a copy so I could leave the book on the coffee table and grin every time I walked past it.

Now you have to write a cupcake book. Set in NYC’s westside, featuring Bob’s guy as a sushi chef (’cause he’s good with knives and chopping things) and have him own the restaurant next door, and your gal would be the bakery chef, all pink icing and sprinkles and stuff. And she’d hate the fish guts smell and he’d hate all the sweetness, and….

Love Cakewrecks! Actually, it’s not cupcakes Jen dislikes. It’s the CupCake Cakes (CCC’s *patooie*) that she scorns, mostly because of the ridiculous amounts of frosting on top, plus the the fact that they glue the cupcakes to the board with more frosting, so the point of cupcakes (make it easier to neatly eat a piece of cake) is completely ruined by the CCC presentation. I may have read her opinions on CCC’s a few times. I’m sure this cupcake would be completely acceptable (especially since it’s so awesome! Great call by the German publisher).

Very, ah, creative …I love that the vampire is cross-eyed! It must be hard to find victims. Given the latest fixation with vampires, are people bitten by vampires still considered victims?

The cover is pretty wild. Can you imagine it on display in bookstores?

Thanks for the laugh!

What’s really, really funny about this is that the Germans have only just (in the last few years) really discovered cupcakes. Halloween only started to catch on about 10 years ago or so. I can still remember the first time I saw a small display of Halloween stuff at KaDeWe in Berlin (in 2000…) and being surprised. I had to schlep cupcake pans and the little paper cups over from the States — now you can buy them in most supermarkets…

So much for globalization!
