Crochet a Rainbow for Australian Flood Relief
Jan202011
Fiber artist Sarah London (you may remember her from the wool-eater blanket I posted about here in June) is coordinating the Crochet a Rainbow project for Australian Flood Relief.

She’s asking for four-and-a-half inch granny squares, any colors, that she’ll join into blankets for flood victims. If you crochet, you know how easy the basic granny square is (my granny taught me to make them when I was very young). If you don’t know how to crochet, this is a good project to learn on since all you have to know is the chain stitch and the double crochet stitch (treble crochet if you’re British). Purlbee has a great pictorial tutorial, and there’s a good video tutorial here.

Or if you already know how and have a stash of yarn you’d like to de-stash, here’s a good-hearted way to do it. And then with your new skills, you can move onto other granny projects:

Granny Squares: keeping people warm and dry since forever.

I would love to see someone wearing that bathing suit at the beach. Now there’s a person with a sense of humor.

See, it’s the granny square as nipple target that really disturbs me there.

Well… I did buy that hook for the boa….
But in honesty, it’ll have to be a smaller hook. Might just get on board with this, especially now that you’ve shown me the variety of applications that Granny Squares have.
I have been telling my friends that I need a bit more “hoochie” in my clothes (I dress a little too old for my age and personality – a bit of hoochie would be just right.)

Wow! I speechless re the suit, but I love the idea. I haven’t crocheted in almost 35 years, but I love the idea enough to buy some yarn and try a square. I might have to see if middle-kidlet has a crochet hook.
I don’t want to derail the blog, but I did log on as I heard the news about the biggest arrest of mob-guys in history. I’m thinkin’ it’s a good time for an Agnes plug…

I saw that, too. Agnes is laying low in SC, pretending she’s not married to a mob prince.

Oh, so she’s back in SC? Maybe she’ll find Moot?

They stayed in SC. Lisa Livia and Carpenter left. Shane and Agnes stayed in the house.

As long as Agnes has a frying pan, they’ll be okay.

I just decided to learn to crochet this year, so maybe this is the project for me. Now I just need some supplies…

I think there’s a reason you can’t see the model’s face… It reminds of “You Knit What?” blog that is sadly no longer updated (http://youknitwhat.blogspot.com/ for those of you who missed it). Oddly enough, “ugly knitting” produced a LOT of results… Lots. Also ran across “What Not to Crochet” (http://whatnottocrochet.wordpress.com/) while I was looking.
I’ll see what I can do about the granny squares. It’s likely I’ll need a break from the mind-numbing grey scarf my son wants me to make him. I’m not a fan of scarves. Especially scarves for “manly men”. They tend to be fairly long projects with nothing to make it interesting. Though I suppose they’re good for perfecting technique. Maybe.

Hmmmm … if I knitted a bathing suit for myself, I’d need to substitute two crocheted purses in lieu of bra cups.

HAHAHA! Seriously, I think I just peed myself at that one. I’ve got active milk bags for the moment, so I’d have to crochet something extremely… sturdy for myself. Sorry. That was clearly overshare.

I, too, am a Lactating Lady … so I’d need a purse for each side with a sippy straw in it? If I find the pattern, I’ll be sure to send it to you

I so want pictures of all you purses-on-boobs women

This is cool. I’ll have to direct my daughter here to see that suit.
Wish I could help out my fellow Aussies, but I don’t crotchet or knit. Maybe I should learn? Nah. I’ll send a check.

I can knit and follow most any pattern – athough a lace shawl has me a bit stumped right now – so I tried to teach myself to crochet. I was fine until I tried to turn:) Then I couldn’t figure out where the yarn went anymore. Looks like I’ll be going back to You Tube for more instruction before I even try a square lest it ends up a rhombus or trapezoid.

I’m trying to imagine someone making all of those squares into quilts. It sounds daunting. That suit looks like it would be very uncomfortable when wet. Of course, if I were that model, I would never go near the water, I would just sit around posing with my arms over my head.

Those are by far the most un-granny-ish granny circles (not squares, alas) I ever did see. I wonder what that suit does when it gets wet. Because most yarns tend to stretch and sag then. Cotton, however, might shrink with drying so that would make for some interesting bondage effect.

I might have to give in and learn to crochet. My MIL used to know how, but has Alsziemer’s(sp). Maybe with a little help she can handle these squares.

okay, this has nothing to do with crochet, but I immediately thought of you. Wonder woman inspired makeup with branded cases.

I’ll spring for a mascara just to get the case.

I always wanted to be Wonder Woman when I grew up. Still working on it. Do you think the lipstick would help?

I love how advertising sells improbable images anyway “Buy this! It make you like that!!!” And now they’re selling a fictional improbable image.
