Maybe This Time: The Collage

Aug302010

The Maybe This Time collage is one of my favorites because it has such a mood to it. Also it was a LOT of fun to make. (Click to enlarge. Click again and it swallows your computer.)

*Sorry. My mother tends to use the 1st person plural case, and it’s rubbed off on me.

So, do I get a prize? Huh? Huh? Do I?

I considered posting that I could see it, and it would have been the first comment to say so since Pacific time let me (apparently) be the first to see the correction, but seemed a little too nah-nah-na-nah-nah so I didn’t. I just enjoyed your many single flowers in teacups and am wondering how that will relate which I will presumably find out after the book arrives. Although the free shipping seems to mean that Amazon will just not hurry to ship it.

You can figure them out? I keep going so who is Candice Bergman suppose to represent and who is Paul Neuman suppose to represent and who is Bob Newhart suppose to represent. I think May and Isolde are the only two I can pick out, well, and the kids. I assume too the woman in the middle is suppose to represent Andie.

Newman is one of the placeholders for North.
Bergman was Lydia.
Newhart was Dennis.
May is several different images from the net.
Isolde is the woman at the top with the big hair and glasses. I think she was plaintiff on Judge Judy or something like that.

The couch. I saw it in a magazine and cut it out and glued it on not knowing why. Then Dennis got stuck to it.
The Polaroids at the bottom. I saw them and then realized North had taken them on their brief honeymoon.
The dancing statue gave me May dancing.
The blue doll gave me Jessica, mottled and mildewing.
Angela Lansbury in Sweeney Todd gave me Mrs. Crumb.
I’m sure there were more, but I’m fried right now. Book’s out tomorrow. Promotion hell started a week ago. I’ll be chipper again in October.

This is so incredibly perfect. With all your other collages, I looked at them and thought, “Huh. That’s not how I pictured it.” Or, “Who’s that supposed to be?” For me, this one is more like a scrapbook page, where I point and say, “Oh, look! It’s so-and-so!” Everyone is just as I envisioned them in my head. It’s hilarious, too, that I always heard Dennis speaking in Bob Newhart’s voice, and then, there he is!

Okay, I’m probably the only one… and it’s probably been mentioned previously, but… who is the model for the heroine? I recognize Paul Newman *sigh*, but not Andie. I know I’m going to go “OF COURSE!” when someone tells me, but right now am clueless.

Thumb up 0

On August 30, 2010 at 7:18 pm Jenny said...

I usually use more than one placeholder because it’s more of a collection of attitudes than it is a particular personality or face. So Andie was Maggie Gyllenhaal and Sarah McLeod, an actress from Lord of the Rings, and some anonymous models in a catalog. North was James Spader and Paul Newman and somebody else who escapes me now. It’s a sum-of-the-parts thing.

Okay, I’m starting to worry about all the people leaving comments like “But what is time?” Because I just know what that sort of thing leads to. Next people will start asking “What is truth?” and “What’s it all about, really, when you get right down to it, I mean really?”
And then this whole blog will descend into a navel-gazing episode of truly epic proportions.
After that, there’s nothing for it but patchouli incense and maybe a flamethrower.

I’m deeply intimidated by the thoroughness of your collage. It’s impressive. I do enjoy a pic of young Paul Newman anytime! Or middle aged Newman. Or old Newman. Not picky on that one–he was charming in Message in a Bottle (he was the only thing that could elevate the plot of: oh, I am sooo depressed yet attractive. Oooh, me, too. Let’s be tentative and gloomy. Oops, he drowned).
