How to Steal a Million Tonight on #PopD

Aug202010

I love this movie. It’s really, really, really hard to write good froth, the stuff that just keeps going and going without anything under it, like those birds that run across the surface of the water. It’s exhilarating to watch but exhausting to write, and George Bradshaw and Harry Kurnitz nailed it. Of course William Wyler directing Audrey Hepburn and Peter O’Toole doesn’t hurt. When you’ve got two watch-them-change-the-oil-in-their-car actors gliding across the water, you’re ahead from the get-go.

How much do I love this movie? Did you ever read Faking It? Except I can’t keep it this light and this funny and this fast. If your brain needs a fabulous vacation, get it a spa robe for tonight.

I love Faking It, and this is one of my all-time favourite 60s caper movies, but I never made the connection. I feel very silly….

Loved Faking It, re-read it earlier this year. And, my very own shiny DVD came by UPS today. Never seen it. Now with the connection, I am quite giddy with anticipation.

DH and I started watching it a couple of weeks ago but it was longer than we’d realized and we ran out of time. My brain DOES need a spa, thankyouverymuch. I’m SO ready to finish it tonight. :)

Oh, no. No, no, no, no, no, no. I have so much to do, I can’t possibly watch a movie tonight. But, this sounds soooo good- and the connection to Faking It… geez, you’re like the mistress of temptation. It’s $2.99 to rent it on Amazon’s instant watch- yes, you made me check. Bills, Girl Scout registrations, piles of toys to be sorted spread across my living room, an unfinished kitchen floor, scary mounds of laundry- Argh!

I’m beginning to get a little annoyed with my library. They don’t have this movie, or American Dreamer, or half of the other movies I’ve looked for (the other half were kids movies).

That, and they have the Breakfast at Tiffany’s book that Maureen Dowd referenced in that romantic comedy op-ed. Though I suppose in their defense, at least they have Breakfast at Tiffany’s, too.

Is interlibrary loan an option? One good thing I can say for Michigan, we have an awesome ILL network. Of course, I have to plan ahead to use it.

I don’t know how I keep getting left behind. For some reason I thought we were on Father Goose… Never seen this one–now I must, but it doesn’t look like it’ll be tonight.

Whatever happened to the Gothic list? Did I miss that too?

We’re starting that in October. Oct. 1, I think. It’s on the Cherry Forums schedule, but it’s on my back burner right now because the promo for MTT starts, uh, now, and then there’s that freaking book tour plus I have to finish Liz. But I’ll start talking about it again at the end of Sept.

I love this movie. I also thought of it when I read Faking It. I love to see how Audrey becomes increasingly impressed with his plan as it unfolds.

mmmmm…that moment in the closet when you realize he could just dive right into her….in a manner of speaking….good thing for his 60s rep PO was known as a ladies’ man, b/c that run across the tarmac is enough to kill anyone’s macho…

(-: I LOVED Faking It, and this was such a fun, fun movie. One thing, though: I think most movies are from short stories. Even if they are from novels, the novels are pruned down to basically short stories to fit into 90 to 140 minutes. I think it might be slightly easier to keep the froth going that long (not easy, just easier). It’s a huge gift to be able to keep that up for novel length — I think PG Wodehouse managed to do it, but his novels are quite short. Not a judgement. Just a fact.

Faking It *isn’t* pure froth; it takes some little detours into deepness (which can also be quite funny — the mom and her creative output that included teeth always makes me laugh, because it should be so true). Just super; I go back to that book again and again.

Okay as if I wasn’t already looking forward to watching this movie, I adore Audrey Hepburn and this is one of her movies that I haven’t seen, then I read the synopsis for it yesterday and I thought it sounded a lot like Faking It which is my absolute FAVORITE Crusie book. And now you’ve confirmed it. I can’t wait to watch it!
