Sunday Movie Night: American Dreamer

Aug72010

Lucy and I are watching American Dreamer tomorrow night. I may make Chicken Marsala. It’s been that kind of week. We’ll tweet, but we’re not assuming anybody will be joining us because of the incredibly short notice. You better be there for Father Goose on Friday, though. We gave you plenty of time to get that one.

OMG–love American Dreamer!! I’m going to have to Netflix it, now that you’ve reminded me of it. That and The Blues Brothers, which I blogged about today and have a strange craving to watch.

I just went to the grocery store and happened to find “Better Off Dead” by the checkout for $5.99. Of course, I had to get it. I was almost sure it’s on the list.

I was actually hoping they might have “American Dreamer” since I found “My Man Godfrey” (which we aren’t watching but did debate) in the bin before we finalized The List.

I’m crossing my fingers that I might be able to purchase this for download from Amazon. We can’t watch “The Apartment” tonight as catch-up; the mood is too tense here, so I’m glad to know that ahead of time, actually.

I’m making a poor-student French dinner and hoping to improve the mood considerably. :D

Better Off Dead is on the list (I’m not sure it should be but I love the movie so we’ll give it a shot), but if you’re looking for a mood enhancer, I’d watch it tonight. Incredibly funny.

Or there’s always Dodgeball. You shouldn’t laugh but you do. Plus, unicorns.

Ah, yes, the unicorns. As soon as I can figure out how to get a picture in the picture-thing-y there will be a unicorn in our future.

We watched “Dodgeball” when you recommended it. DH said “You want to watch what?” I said, “Yep.” We never looked back and laughed a LOT. :)

It should not be funny. Hitting people with wrenches is not funny. But oh my god.
Did you watch the extras? Where the director said that Justin Long has no flinch reflex? With the other actors, they had to shoot fast because after a couple of takes they were flinching before anything was thrown at them, but Long never flinched.
We’re debating on whether to show it to the kids. Because hitting people with wrenches is bad.

Oh no! We will have to rent it again. We didn’t show it to the kids — the 10 year old boy tends to repeat stuff at school still… — but I’m sure we’d watch it again and see the extras. I’m nerdy that way.

Yeah but think of all the children who’ve watched the 3 Stooges and not … oh wait, some of them did, though. Still denying them seem almost cruel.

What, no Eiffel Tower Jell-O mold?

Also… what time will you watch? I have the movie here ready to go. Haven’t watched it in ages, but I loooooved it when it came out and it was a standard go-to video for my goofball friends and me in the ’80s.

7PM ET. We cue it up to the beginning of the studio logo–the Columbia lady, the MGM lion–and hit play when our computers read 7:00. The Twitter group is #PopD, so keep putting that in your comments and you’re good to go. (I never remember so I just paste it into the next comment as soon as I hit send on the last one. I am Twitter impaired.)

When you wrote “twitter impaired”, I remembered Georgette Heyer using the word, “twitterpated” in her novels. I think it was usually uttered by a curmudgeonly old man. I like the sound of it. It’s very descriptive and could have a brand new meaning today.

Definitely twitter-pated. Also podcast impaired since once again I used the wrong damn microphone. Jeez.

I have a question….when Lucy has seen American Dreamer does her number go back down to one? If so, is there anything that can erase the unicorn collection?

@cat: I suspect nothing can erase an unicorn collection. Just embrace the dark side. :)

Yes, her number goes back down to one.
A unicorn collection, however, is forever.

It seems I have loaned out my DVD of American Dreamer, but I had the back up VHS tape, recorded off HBO or some such channel back in the 1980′s. (Yes, I am a pack rat and why if it isn’t broken would I get rid of it. Just saying.) It is in the player, cued up and ready to go.

Movie is on our list. I’m not reading any reviews at all until I see it for myself. Wouldn’t want you all to color my perception of a movie, now would I?

Also, the newest copy of Interweave Knits has a dachsund scarf kit avaialble. Got to find the magazine to be able to give you the company. Oh, and they have a pink poodle scarf as well….even down to the pom poms on the legs. For some reason I thought you might be interested. Me, I’m going to adapt it and make a PETA friendly fox scarf with the head and all. Wonder where I can get glass eye buttons?

Lucy/Lani knits. I crochet. I’ll pass on the good word because she’ll be all over dachshund and poodle knits.
Hobby Lobby or Michaels are both good for eyes, but my fave places for buttons are eBay and Etsy. Some very weird things going on there which are wonderful.

I thought you were talking about a different movie until you posted the picture. THAT American Dreamer I’ve seen, and LOVED! Will have to watch it again. Tom Conti is highly underrated. Did you see the one where he played the Pope who walked away from his job? Wonderful. (Something Grace, I think.)

Oh my word! I LOVE this movie! And I could never remember the name of it, so I haven’t seen it in years and years and years. When I read the other post you wrote about it, I thought, “Hmm. American Dreamer. Never seen it.”

But now I must Netflix it, oh yes I must!

Oh! I love Father Goose! That was one of my all-time favorite movies as a kid. I’ll have to dig out my Dad’s copy and watch it.

Favorite line:
“But I thought he was supposed to have his throat cut!”

Yes, I know anyone who hasn’t seen the movie is now backing away from the keyboard and calling Blogland Security, but in the scene it’s a funny line! I swear it.
Really. (Well, the look on the other character’s face was what was so funny.)

I think that’s when the movie works, when the characters themselves acknowledge that it’s a silly plot. (Well, that’s when the movie works apart from the romance, which is awesome.)

Second favorite line would probably be “Follow that car! … I can’t believe I just said that.”
