That’s Two

Aug52010

You know, you think you know somebody and then they move in with you and suddenly their dark sides emerge. In the case of Lani Diane Rich, it’s particularly egregious.

First I found out about her tawdry past. We were looking at one of those gaudy unicorn illustrations, and I was making mock, and she said, “I used to collect unicorns.”

The silence stretched out and she looked up and said, “What?”

I said, “This is the kind of thing you tell people before you move in.”

She said, “I don’t collect them now.”

I said, “Once a unicorn collector, always a unicorn collector.” Then the next time I was at T. J. Maxx, I saw a silver bag with a pink unicorn on it marked down to $7. I brought it home and gave it to her.

“So this is how it’s going to be,” she said.

That was One.

Today in the car coming back from KMart, we were talking about what movie we could watch this weekend that wasn’t on PopD. I said, “We can always watch American Dreamer again.”

She said, “I’ve never seen it.”

I almost drove off the road. “You’ve never seen it? You call yourself a romance writer and you’ve never seen American Dreamer?”

“I don’t think so.”

“You’ve never seen the Eiffel Tower jello mold?”

“No,” she said, positive now.

“Jesus,” I said.

We drove along in silence. She’s never seen American Dreamer. Wait’ll I tell Krissie, I thought. Heads will explode.

“Jen?” she said.

“That’s Two,” I told her.

Freaking unicorns and now this. God knows what else lurks beneath that sunny exterior. I live in fear, I really do.

And, I did have one — no two — sculptures. …And some sort of Halmark Glass thing-y (actually, I think I still have that) and a pewter unicorn head with jewelry bits inside — unicorn earrings, a necklace… (actually, I think I still have that too….) But the thing is, that’s probably ALL, so really, it was _lame_ in terms of a collection. (Oh, wait, the peweter unicorn D&D statuette from the first geek boyfriend…)
Hey, it was the _’80′s_ for cryin’ out loud.

After watching the “Last Unicorn” as a kid I had a poster with a unicorn on my wall over my bed iirc – not for very long though, just the echo of the film – , and I had to IMDB the movie, too. But we don’t get every single US movie over here (although pretty much the majority), so this might act as explanation.
So what’s the deal with unicorns and American Dreamer? – she says innocently.

I was an inadvertent unicorn collector. When I was about four, I admired a unicorn card at a store, and my parents bought it for me. I thought it was the most beautiful piece of art ever created. I hung it over my bed. And there you have it… one card. But ever after when a family member gave me a present, it tended to be a unicorn something-or-other, with a unicorn gift card to go along with… all this was terribly exciting and fun at first, becoming gradually less thrilling, until I turned 12, and then I just hated them, but wasn’t allowed to get rid of anything because they had been gifts. Happily, I’m 46 now and living unicorn free!

What’s wrong with unicorns? Not that I ever collected them, but they’re equine, so they can’t be all bad, even if mythical. Okay, there are an awful lot of ghastly, twee unicorn pics around, but the idea of a horned horse is no odder (or possibly less odd) than a winged horse, and winged horses have been around for yonks. So to speak. Lovely Greek and Etruscan and Roman renderings of Pegasus.
And I have never HEARD of American Dreamer, let alone seen it.

I did not collect unicorns, ever. And, I’ve never seen or heard of American Dreamer. That might be because in 1984 I was not a writer, had a toddler and a new born and a demanding Doctor husband, who was on call 24/7. When I look back on those years I know I missed a lot, and my only desire was to find one night, just one night when I could sleep straight through. Well, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. : )
I googled the movie and it sounds fun, although the wikipedia critique questioned the heroine’s believability because she could amazingly speak fluent Russian and German after a bump on the head and suffering from amnesia. Hey we’re romance authors, throw in a secret baby and we’re good. Ducking and running…

I did not collect unicorns or dragons, but that was probably due to shortage of funds as I thought about getting them a lot.

Lastly, BF mentioned the glittery hoo-ha. I’m lucky I haven’t taken to vajazzling as I managed to bruise mine on a rock while river rafting last weekend. I can’t/won’t imagine the damage had I tried to go extra glittery.

The Glittery Hooha is something one is born with. Others vajazzle their vajayjays because they are lacking in the natural sparkles. Do your chairs glow? Be sure to ask your gynecologist to check for glitter next time. A glittery Hooha needs proper maintenance after all.

The Irish Rovers. I had the 45. It was not part of the collection.

In my defense (me defensive??) I did not buy any of the unicorns. Nor the record, but I played that a lot. That and Bobby Sherman. I only had two after I stepped on “I’ll Never Fall In Love (Again).”

In 1984 I was in junior high which explains my ignorance of American Dreamer AND the rather sparkly collection of unicorns I had. It was almost a requirement of the 80s for teen girls to love unicorns. I also had legwarmers to wear with my miniskirts and those horrible jelly shoes. It was quite a time for fashion.

I’m using the fact that I was in middle school at the time to excuse my ignorance of American Dreamer. Considering that my mom is a huge movie buff, I’m kind of surprised that I haven’t even HEARD of it.

Didn’t collect unicorns, but my best friend did. I collected dolls (less than 10 total, not counting Barbies), and stuffed animals. My sister had the market cornered on equines (stuffed, pictures, you name it), so I think I went for cats. And rabbits. I’m still a teensy bit melancholy from time to time that I missed out on the stuffed bunnies with noses that moved (they’re in the toy store window in _Adventures in Babysitting_, if anyone’s interested). And my mother managed to get me a herd of My Little Ponies…

Never mind. I’ll just let myself out. Between the Barbies and the My Little Ponies, I’m toast.

Anyone ever heard of the Invisible Pink Unicorn? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invisible_Pink_Unicorn It’s my kind of unicorn.

I still have some of my dragons and almost all of my teddy bears. I liked unicorns, but toward the end of the 70s, everyone started collecting them. And I tend to prefer predatory animals than prey. :D

I’m one of the many who haven’t seen it, but I’m Netflixing it tonight so that I can keep some Cruise cred.

I didn’t collect unicorns, although I watched and read The Last Unicorn many times. I do have a couple of figurines that were gifts when I was younger. My favorite of the two is a shaggy brown one with sad eyes. He’s the Eeyore of unicorns. I love fairy tales in general, so I also have a few frog princes scattered around.

I did collect bookmarks. Even had a month-long display of them at the local library one time, with all different sorts. I still have the box around here somewhere. Does that make me a dork? :)

People of distinction and snark collect frog princes. You get points for that. Until you get more than half a dozen. Then you’re in unicorn territory again.

Yay I get points today. Never collected unicorns. LOVE American Dreamer. I have seen it so many times. Tom Conti is so lovable in that movie. And his comedic timing is impeccable. I used to watch it when I wanted to feel good about the male species as a whole.

I watched American Dreamer after I heard it referenced in one of your books (Charlie All Night, I think) and loved it. I had never heard of it before and I watch a lot of movies.

For the record, I collected Disney figurines as a kid and people still give them for birthdays and holidays. I can’t seem to be mean enough to point out that I haven’t collected them for years. Anyway, I think reformed collectors should get a pass.

I never collected unicorns, but I was acquiring quite a few things with cats and kittens on them, although usually they were gifts rather than things I requested or bought myself. Well ok, there were the kitten posters on my walls. I guess I have to cop to that.

However, instead of barbies or baby dolls, I had a Wonder Woman doll when I was little. Surely that negates the kitten posters.

(repost?) I wonder if we could get a group discount for American Dreamer if we all order from the same place. . . .

As for unicorns: zombies are getting so passe. I think unicorns could be The Monster for the twenty-teens. They have a horn and a thing for virgins, so the possibilities are definitely there . . . Dark Matter Unicorn is MINE, but I think there’s plenty of room in the unicorn field for all of us.

(-: Quick writers might want to take up something transitional, like Virgin Zombie vs. The Unicorn.

Some of the YA folks have been involved in a debate as to who would win in a zombies vs. unicorns conflict for while (I think it is Printz winner John Green and Maureen Johnson among others). So there is a built in audience for this title. ;)
I have seen American Dreamer, on VHS no less ( yes I am old). Liked it and remember how I dunno, sweet? romantic? it was, but don’t remember any banter which is the highlight of a good rom com for me. Of course I had a one year old at the time I saw it so YMMV.
And it’s not a collection if OTHER PEOPLE give you unicorns because they remind them of you, right? right? anyone?

The corner of shame is getting pretty crowed. Sorry, never even heard of American Dreamer. But in my defense, in 1984 I was high on the fumes of AquaRock trying to make my bangs stand four feet off my head to balance out the ziggurat perm. Also if it didn’t have John Cusak or Michael J Fox or Rob Lowe in it my radar would never have picked it up.

In my first critique group we passed around a vhs copy of American Dreamer I loved it.

Last month I went to Norway. The Rick Steves guidebook recommended a restuarant in Bergen with a unicorn he described as “anatomically correct” – my friend said it was closed Sunday so we didn’t go. Later she admitted that the closed Sunday restuarant was the one listed below it.

Will I ever make it back to Bergen? This is the only time I’ve pined for a unicorn.

If you look at the fact that unicorns have this long thing on their heads, and they want to find a virgin and lay their heads in the virgin’s lap, then the unicorn craze could be seen as millions of little girls claiming their sexuality.

And you could still incorporate the sexual element with the Zombie Unicorns, or the Vampire-Staking Unicorns, or the ….

American Dreamer has been one of my favourite films for decades. It gets everything right. I got hold of the DVD when my son was about fourteen and in sulky-teen mode, but he watched it with me because I’d told him about the drinking them under the table scene. In the bit where she doesn’t go through passport control, he muttered “Yes!” Because that’s how good it is, and how real it is, and how it makes you care.

In 1984 I gave birth to my third child in five years. That, and the rest of the 80′s (since another kid showed up in ’87), are a blur. Just got caught up with all the missed Woody Allens a couple of years ago.

So, no, have not seen American Dreamer, either. In my defense, at least I didn’t collect unicorns. Or the kids would have destroyed them if I had.

BUT AD sound like a perfect movie for my friend’s and my standing Monday Feast and Fluff nights. She’s recently (and painfully) divorced; I’m recently widowed — getting together once a week for dinner and whatever’s ABC’s up to keeps us from losing our minds. However, since the Bachelorette’s over and even we won’t sink to the level of Bachelor Pad (it’s all about standards, baby) we’re definitely in the market for fun DVDs.

Until Dancing With the Stars resumes, at least.

Nope. It can start anywhere and go anywhere. I think an idea like zombie unicorns usually hits several places at once because of the prevalence of zombies and unicorns and because of the tension of putting them together.
