Hero Material

Jul282010

Okay, the commercial is hysterical, but the guy in real life, Isaiah Mustafa? Hot, funny, smart, capable of reinventing himself, hot, funny, smart, talks about his girlfriend, hot, funny, smart, confident enough to make fun of himself, hot, funny, smart, did I mention gorgeous? Also, great sense of humor. If I wrote him, nobody would believe him. Watch:

Also, I love Ellen Degeneres.

Now I just have to figure out how to use “I’m on a horse” in real life.

Question: Jenny, are you on a role?
Answer:, No, _____________.

Now I just have to figure out if blogland qualifies as ‘real life.’

Where the video is supposed to be, is blank for me. (I’m on a mac, OS 10.6.4)

I can tell I am missing something good. Dang it.

Huh. I’m on a Mac 10.6.4, too, and it’s there.

The link worked, and I could see it from my other computer, so it’s something on my end.

And great clip… I love Ellen.

I think, from now on, when we’re in the middle of being seriously jazzed/successful about something, we have to say, “I’m on a horse.”

On July 28, 2010 at 12:19 pm Jenny said...

I think that’s it. A calm understated expression of our essential coolness.

That did it. Now I’m hopelessly in love.

Finally a video I am able to watch since it does not contain material which is not available in my country. And it’s really funny, too.

I think of “I’m on a horse” as the new black. It goes anywhere. I mean, when is it NOT appropriate? Any time there’s a lull in the conversation, I drop it in.

Of course, I spend a lot of time alone, so my conversations have fewer in-the-flesh participants than those of most people.

Believe me, when it comes to getting The Look from strangers, a pleasant, conversational, “I’m on a horse” is the least of my worries.

Love this commercial and I love that he seems so genuine. And hot, did anyone mention that he is hot?
I’m on a horse is now thinly veiled code for – hot guy over there. As in – I’m on a horse at three o’clock. – See how well that works? You can sound like your one of the horsey set that has regular ride times at the stables.

On July 28, 2010 at 11:07 am Dee said...

“…regular ride times at the stables.” Interesting euphemism. ;)

LOL now that did not occur to me…but I like it!!

That series of commercials is very funny. It doesn’t make me want squirt Old Spice on a guy, but it is really funny and I give the ad guys lots of points for originality and the company gets points for being willing to poke a little fun at itself.

I’m on a horse … a line that readers of the old historicals can appreciate, and poke affection fun at in a way nobody else would understand.

On July 28, 2010 at 10:37 am Beki said...

I absolutely cannot let Rich use Old Spice, as it’s the scent I grew up smelling on my daddy, and that’s just weird. BUT these commercials are the best thing to come down the pike in a WHILE and he is beyond scorching hot. Jenny, if you wrote him I would believe him. Here he is. I say give it a try, woman, and let us be the judges. :) I’m on a horse.

In that way it reminds me of the Gap commercials (“Everyone in Khaki,” “Ice ice Baby”) because they were arresting and got noticed, but ultimately perhaps not effective. At least, I sure didn’t shop at the Gap any more often. Like ever. At all.

So I guess it remains to be seen whether Old Spice will get a lasting spike in sales. But he’s a find.

On July 28, 2010 at 11:57 am NancyF said...

I think Old Spice knows that most mens body wash is purchased by women so that is the market they are going after. Unless it reminds you of your Dad, and I can see why that may not make you feel sexy towards your man, this commercial may get women to stop and look at the Old Spice shelf and smile. People buy things they feel positive about.

On July 28, 2010 at 12:20 pm Jenny said...

Old Spice sales went up 107% in the month the commercial aired.

He gave us “I’m on a horse”, he is hot, funny, and smart, and there is also this- http://www.flickr.com/photos/thebloggess/4795246446/
Which ups both the hotness (because you get to stare, not because Homer’s hot), and the funny (because now whenever you see one of the commericials, you will be seeing Homer).

Oh! Have you all seen that those YouTube responses resulted in there being a voicemail generator with his voice?

I’m 25 and Old Spice body washes have been weirdly popular with most of my guy friends since the start of college. Not sure if it’s a Cleveland thing (they were all from Cleveland) or just it was affordable and didn’t smell of lady, but the newer scents actually do smell nice, if a little overpowering. Very oddly, I once used some before a frat party (was staying with one said guy friends and forgot my soap and desperately needed a shower in the Columbus heat) and I got way more flirtation than normal that night. Apparently, it’s just as hot for a lady to use.

On July 29, 2010 at 1:57 am Micki said...

LOLOL! That is some serious food for thought. I always liked wearing “men’s” fragrances, but never really noticed getting extra lucky.
