Maybe This Time: Romantic Times Review

Jul272010

Romantic Times knows romance, so I’m breathing a little easier about the romance being a major subplot in MTT instead of the center of the story. And thank you, Jill Smith.

Top Pick, ****1/2 HOT: “After six years without a solo project, Crusie roars back onto the scen with a marvelous new tale that inclueds her patented brand of humor and human foibles. Crusie takes lucky readers into a gothic and ghostly adventure set in 1992, filled with the offbeat and the wacky. Nevertheless, the emotions ring true as this indomitable heroine fights for the children–and second chances. Crusie is brilliant as always and this novel is well worth the wait.” Jill M. Smith

You know, I wouldn’t have labeled this hot. But what do I know. Thank you, Romantic Times.

Oh that’s just fine.
Be that way, woman, BE THAT WAY.

You REALIZE that I’m not going to get my hands on this book for ANOTHER MONTH?

And the next person who mentions that they just happened to have read an advanced copy gets my extra-specially evil hex directed Right At Them, you guys got that???

Ditto to that last part, Merry. I writhe in envious agony every time I see a mention of an ARC being read. Why isn’t it MTT’s release date yet? *pouts*

Hey, at least you CAN read it in a month. I can’t afford to buy it, and by that time I’m back at college–where the library refuses to stock romances that aren’t 100 years old.

I’M GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT TIL THANKSGIVING.

Here’s someone who knows how to write a review. No spoilers in this one. And they obviously have good taste. Makes me think I need to create a second entry in the scene with a unique weapon contest. Either I win that or I’m on BAM’s doorstep when they open 8/31. Can’t wait.
Congrats on another good review. Is that Liz book done yet? (kidding, kind of…)

Thank heavens it’s not available for another month, by then I should have fulfilled my promise not to buy another book until I’d read 20 books off the TBR pile!!

I agree about the wait…..I feel like I should put in for a day off work when I get my copy because, let’s face it, I am not putting it down until I have read it straight through the first time.
I am so glad you are getting positive reviews, but I expected nothing less.

Hooray, “brilliant as always”! It’s nice to see that the art of literary criticism is alive and well at Romantic Times. This woman clearly knows a great book when she reads one. By the way, I am also in the “how much longer is it???” camp. I sense that this is going to be an instant favorite.

I think the only one left before publication is Library Journal, but I’m not sure. It’s not a tease, I swear. Also, remember, romance as a subplot so scale back those expectations. In fact, let’s just assume it’s mediocre and then nobody will be disappointed. As Lucy March always says, “A low bar benefits everybody.”

Do I care if it’s romance? Nay, Madame. I tell you, I do not. Good writing is good writing, regardless of genre. I’ll be waiting not-so-patiently. Oh, and we’ve already read all your other stuff, so it’s too late for all the low bar business.

Whoo hoo! And sorry, I expect perfection, as usual. So no pressure :-)

I know it will be great. And frankly, a mediocre Crusie, if there ever were to be such a thing, would still be 10 times better than a great anybody else. Just sayin’

Sighs — I find this to be cruel and unusual punishment, and frankly, I’m not that much of a masochist and yet, suffer I shall. But I’ll make Fokker and Kelly and Deborah suffer with me, moaning and groaning and gnashing of teeth included. I mean, if you’re going to suffer, suffer in *style*.

Congratulations on another fabulous review! You deserve it, of course.

Hey, did somebody say there was Crusie gear at Cafe Press? I’m having trouble finding it. I’m committed to buying something from there tonight (long story, pact between my niece, my daughter, and myself) and when I do a “Crusie” search at Cafe Press, the only thing that comes up which seems to match is a thong with cherries on it. :-)

While I am drooling here to get my hands on this book and feeling very impatient, the only thought that gets me through is knowing this should deliver to my work right in time for Labor Day Weekend. One glorious and blissful weekend of reading and then the extra day on Monday to do all the stuff I will blow off until I have read this thing from cover to cover.

If the male and female lead even meet a 2nd time, it will be more of a romance than TOTS.

And, oh, by the way, how old were you when you read it and did it scare you?

I can’t remember. I did most of my work on it during the PhD stuff. One of my general exams was a teaching unit on it.
I was about twelve when I read Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, though. Scared the hell out of me.

Book anticipation is yet another reason why I’m glad that I bought a Kindle. I’ve moaned about this before, but I live in a part of the Florida Keys that doesn’t have full service book stores. The closest chain store is a Borders Express over an hour away in Key West. I could go to the independent discount books store or to the Health Food Store that also carries some books and get them to order it, but I would still not get it on the release date.

Most of the time I just wait until I take a trip off the rock to Miami and then hit up a Borders or B&N. I load up on books like government officials stocking a secret bunker to through the Apocalypse.

Now I just hit “Pre-Order” on the Kindle and bask in the calm “gratification is within my wireless reach” anticipation, knowing that as soon as the book is available it will beam to me.

All is good. Nobody gets hurt.
