Publisher’s Weekly reviewed Maybe This Time:
Maybe This Time
Jennifer Crusie, St. Martin’s, $24.99 (352p) ISBN 978-0-312-30378-5
Crusie (Bet Me) is back on her own–after a couple of books written with Bob Mayer–with a sweet, offbeat romantic tale of second chances. Thirty-four-year-old Andie, hoping to cut the ties that still bind her to rich ex-hubby North, winds up instead getting drafted to “fix” the troubled orphaned children of North’s cousin, who live with a grouchy housekeeper and a crew of ghosts that have an interest in the kids and their gothic mansion home. But there’s no ordinary fix for this unruly bunch of living and undead as Andie tries to cajole them all–troubled and lonely kids Alice and Carter, dead aunt May aiming for a do-over, newly dead Dennis, and ancient spooks Miss J and Peter–into moving on. Crusie’s created a sharp cast of lonely souls, wacky weirdos, ghosts both good and bad, and unlikely heroes who are brave enough to give life and love one more try. You don’t have to believe in the afterlife to relish this fun, bright romp. (Sept.)
Very happy in Ohio.

So happy for you to get such a great review and so excited for me when I finally receive my pre-ordered copy and can shut the real world out and dive into Andie and North’s world on 8/31/10!

Lovely review. Pre-ordered my copy last month.

Just goes to show that the reviewer was smart enough to recognize your awesomeness. We would have bought it if he called in a suck-fest. Then we would have left flaming fudge bags on his doorstep, hollering “suck this!” as we drove away. Because we are Cherries, and that’s how we roll with it.
Cannot WAIT to read the book :0)

I can’t tell you how happy I am to have a new Crusie to look forward to on August 31! (Otherwise scheduled to be a Very Bad Day.) The good review is just sprinkles on top of the sundae!

That’s one trade review down, three to go.
And I thank you for your support.
Oh, and just to give you advance warning, the blog in August will be stuff about Maybe This Time pretty often. Scenes, soundtrack, collage, the banana bread recipe . . . you’re going to be really sick of that book.

I never get sick of it; it merely whets my appetite. I was desperate for Wild Ride by the time it came out. I am now jonesing for MTT.
On July 7, 2010 at 3:06 pm Marge said...
But I want it NOW!!!
On July 6, 2010 at 9:52 pm JulieB said...
Har. I’ve read it. We won’t be. I’m waiting for the recipe.
And, the best part of the review, IMO? The author used “cajole.” That is one smart reader.
Yep.

okay, the gloating, it’s totally making me jealous. “Har. I’ve read it.” Shush.

Not going to be sick of it at all. I’m so excited about it and *somewhere* (I just moved!) I have a copy of Turn of the Screw to read first. I know I probably don’t NEED to, but I’m going to. If I can find it. If I ever get unpacked. God, I’m really excited about this book coming out — it means I can just go BUY one instead of reorganizing yet another box of stuff.
;-D
Very impatient in Ohio.

It’s free on the net. Just google for it. It’s been out of copyright for years.

Oh, I have it. Just have to FIND it. (And heaven knows that you don’t need to encourage me to find it online….I need NO encouragement for continued procrastination with the unpacking process!)

I use the amazon reviews for wii games, but not for books.
Have you padded a wall in your house yet – specifically for banging your head against it? I’ve been tempted to do it at work. Subtly, with a quilted wall hanging or something.
On July 7, 2010 at 11:33 pm Jenny said...
You know, it’s this way every time. And every time I say I’m not going to get crazy and every time . . .
The real difference is, this time I’m taking you all with me.
On July 6, 2010 at 10:13 pm Jenny said...
And already I can see what’s going to make me nuts. Two advance readers on Amazon said it felt like the book was out of date, as if I’d written it in 1992. No, it’s SET in 1992, it takes PLACE in 1992.
Going to go bang my head against the wall now.
On July 6, 2010 at 10:59 pm Becky said...
Does anyone pay any attention to Amazon reviews anymore? So many of the reviewers seem to have an ax to grind or a pet author to defend. They’re pretty useless as a way to decide whether a book is worth buying or not.
On July 7, 2010 at 11:14 pm Kelly S said...
sorry, screwed up my nesting. My response to Becky is up two comments (if I get this one in the right place)

Did the negative Amazon reviewers ever read The Turn of the Screw? Geez. Ignore them. Everyone else should go read the Amazon page, though, for the interview between Jenny Crusie and Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Very cute.

Can we give reviews of interviews on Amazon? Very cute indeed

I know, I know, I should never go there. I won’t anymore. I just went to see if the Kirkus Review was up because I don’t have it yet.
On July 6, 2010 at 11:39 pm KellyJ said...
The Kirkus review is on their site (http://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/Fiction/jennifer-crusie/maybe-this-time/) but you have to have a subscription to read it. Wish I did, I would send it to you.
On July 7, 2010 at 3:00 pm Naked Under My Clothes said...
Is it available through a public library’s site? Your agent has a sub, surely, to Kirkus.
On July 7, 2010 at 3:15 pm Jenny said...
My former agent said she read it and put a stake through it, so I’m assuming it’s bad. She didn’t even send it to me which means it’s dreadful.
I LOVE PUBLISHING. Going to kill myself now, just in case.
On July 7, 2010 at 3:24 pm toni said...
Kirkus hates everyone. I would say something crass and rude about things like “needing to get laid” but then that would be wrong.

I have to confess that when I was reading scenes on the blog from MTT I thought you were working over Taming of the Shrew. I kept thinking; how does this relate to Taming of the Shrew? I’ve never read Turn of the Screw. I can’t decide if I’ll read it before MTT or after.
In any case I can’t wait to read your book. And may those amazon reviewers go bald and or become impotent depending on their gender.

Congrats! Let’s see, you wrote the book last year, that would be 2009, but set it in 1992 and the readers are acknowledging that it even feels like it was written in 1992?
I think you can call that one a win.

Congradulations!! I was one of the lucky readers who won an advanced copy (and a major thank you to you!! because I was very sick and it made me feel tons better) and I LOVE adore kiss lick squeeze shmoosh say my blessings for Maybe This Time. It was great and I can’t wait to read it again when it comes out in August.
Also, request – do you think you could put up more merch for sale at cafe press? I kind of bought what you have there a while back and want more good stuff. Especially things like the three goddesses logo from Unfortunate miss fortunes where they look like vases my m. lubell and some awesome quote. Basically, any of your crusie awesomeness on a shirt and a mug and i NEED it
)) pretty please, making my own shirts is so much more time consuming.

Let me talk to Mollie. We never put up Dogs and Goddesses stuff? Huh. I thought we had. Shows you how keyed in I am.

Who invented that Amazon Vine program? The Vine people must spend many, many hours reviewing and are then rewarded with advance copies of lots of good things. I would have liked to at least say, “Excuse me, Profific Reviewer, it’s SET in 1992!”, but only the chosen Vines are allowed to review. Not that I usually read the AZ reviews – I make my lists from RT. I’m still on the notification list for the audio cd (Unabr) – the one for regular folks. I think it’s only the library edition that’s up at Amazon now for $60.00 +. The PW review is great, and so well deserved. Maybe This Time is so damn good.

Great news! Can’t wait to have it in my hot little paws. I watched the BBC’s version of The Turn of the Screw at Christmas and it frightened the life out of me. I’m hoping your version will be less creepy….

I think it’s less creepy. Snark undercuts creep a lot.
