The Joy of Publishing
Mar172010
You may have noticed that in general I am very Zen about publishing. It’s a casino, it’s a crap shoot, you can’t care about it, all that matters is writing a good book. I know that’s true, after seventeen years in publishing, I know for an absolute fact that’s true. And yet the week a book comes out, I am still completely insane.
Part of it is that this time it’s been one problem after another. Bob isn’t listed as an author anywhere. ARGH. B&N had the wrong description and rating up. ARGH. Every review journal in the world lost their review copies. ARGH. SMP linked to the wrong short story, bookstores don’t have the book, Amazon isn’t shipping for a week . . .
Deep breath. Everything’s going to be fine. The book is gorgeous, the story is good, the reviews are strong, relax and breathe deep. Because there’s not a damn thing we can do anyway. We rolled the dice, and now we’re moving on while the world decides what it’s going to do with the book.
You know, if you care about this stuff, you’ll lose your freaking mind.
Meanwhile, we’re working on the covers for Maybe This Time (we’ve been through a dozen at least so far) and the re-issue of Trust Me On This. I won’t see the latest pass at Maybe This Time for a couple of days yet, but we now have a cover for Trust Me On This that is miles ahead of the dog with the shoe glued to his chin on The Cinderella Deal (although Mollie thinks we should have made that a theme and just had a different dog with a cocktail glass glued to his chin this time).
So there was this one to start with:

but I thought the background was too dull and my name was too chaotic, so Bantam sent these three and asked me to pick a font color for my name, a background treatment, and a font for the tagline on the napkin. Which I did. Here are the mix-and-match choices:

You’ll find out which choices I picked in November. I know, the suspense will kill you. Yes, all of those do look like chick lit covers. It’s okay, Trust Me On This is chick lit.
And now back to Liz . . .

You know, I kinda liked the yellow background. It’s cheery. Honestly, I really don’t care what color it is, just as long as I know where and when to get it.
Keep writing. I want Liz. I’m selfish that way.

I went to Borders last night and they didn’t have it on the shelf anywhere. The woman looked it up and graciously offered to check in the back – nothing. So this morning, I called another Borders – they had it and I got it!
So looking forward to reading it. I have to wait a bit – I need to crash through some things for my WIP first and if I have your (ahem, excellent) voice in my head (see what a kiss ass I can be?!) it’ll mess me up. But I’ve been working crazy hours (60 last week) and it’s not over yet and reading WILD RIDE uninterrupted is my reward – eventually.
I vote for the 1st option on the cover treatments. I like the blue on the napkin b/c it calls to the blue on the other side of the glass and I like the font on Would I Lie to You. For what it’s worth.

I like option number 3, I think you’re name stands out more in blue. But in the meantime don’t worry – normally I wait for the paperback, but I’ve had a bad week (fellow virgo, so you can imagine), and in an effort to cheer myself up (and not eat all the chocolate in the house), I ordered Wild Ride. Now hopefully Amazon.co.uk can get it back in stock fast before I cry/scream/eat my body weight in cadbury’s dairy milk.

Yeah, I agree. I feel like the third one keeps your eyes moving– The large author’s name is the first thing you see, but you don’t miss the title since it’s brighter than the name; and then the green of the olives and the text in the note pull your vision down so that you catch all the details, and get all the information that’s there. So, yeah, that’s my favorite. They’re all good, though.

I kinda like the very first one, but yeah, all the colors in your name are just too much. Of the three finalists, I like the third one, because your name stands out. The other two seem to fade into the background, since they’re light colors on white. But like Dee said, I don’t care what color it is, as long as I get it.
And Liz. And Wild Ride, which is finally on its way. And Maybe This Time. And …

I had credits with audible.com – so I got Wild Ride there. But then I got to thinking, maybe that doesn’t count for the numbers so I should buy a physical copy. I like reading better than listening, but I spend a lot of time on the road ferrying kids around and it’s nice to have something to listen to.
I could just buy a couple for my best friends – and then borrow their copies when I want to read rather than listen. That sounds like the best choice! And as one of them borrowed a Crusie from me last year and had it for MONTHS, (she lost it under her bed, after reading it of course) so I don’t feel guilty about keeping hers for a while!
As for the mix and match, I have my thoughts but it really doesn’t matter – it’s what’s inside that counts. If it has Crusie on the cover it’s golden.
Oh my. Now I sound like a brown nose. Too bad. It’s true.

The story is not good- the story is *wonderful*. So sit back for a minute and think about how many people are reading your story and feeling happy, and how they are being especially cheerful around their family and friends and making those people happy, too. Then you should feel really, really good about yourself.
And at least here in Evanston, IL, there is no problem getting the book. My copy from Amazon arrived on my doorstep at 8:30 AM the day it was released, and I know at least two people who have picked up copies at bookstores here in town with no problem whatsoever.

We had no problems with the shipment at my B&N, either. The bounced happily onto the shelves of the “New Fiction” display early Tuesday, two face-outs. I suspect by now a couple have been moved to the “Our Staff Recommends” display.

I got my copy of Wild Ride on Monday at work. (I have all my special orders shipped to work, so I know there will be someone there to sign for it.) I wasn’t paying attention to the day, so when my boss handed me the box from Amazon, I just sort of stared at it and thought, “I haven’t ordered anything…recently…” Then the penny dropped. I squealed like a little girl and my boss said something like, “That good?” And I said, “It’s the new Crusie/Mayer book!!!” “Ahh.” Then she went to her office to shake her head at her crazy employee.
I love pre-ordering.

I stopped at B&N after work last night to buy my copy and WR was right there prominently displayed on the New Fiction shelf (at least a half dozen copies). No problem. Had other things going on last night and didn’t have a chance to start reading (I have to get some sleep so I can function at the day job), but will be reading tonight. No worries.
Oh, and I wouldn’t say Bob Mayer isn’t listed as an author anywhere because looking at my copy, I can see his name. Right there on the book cover. Where it counts the most. Want a pic as proof? No?

What Jennifer said … I don’t know if authors really get it when we thank you for writing great books. You make people feel good for a while and even forget the icky parts of life. That’s priceless, that really is. So thank you.
And thanks to you and Bob for giving the CBs a place to … I don’t know quite what to call it. But I know some of the best people because of you two. So thanks for that as well. I might even forgive you for page 305.

I have no idea what happens on page 305.
But I can tell you how grateful I am to all of you. You have no idea what a difference you make in the success of my books, but let me tell you, it’s considerable. And I am very, very grateful.

ARGH. I should have known better. I saw the first note and Jenny’s response about 305 and immediately thought “printing error,” so I flipped to check. And was spoiled! Not that I really mind, cause I tend to flip ahead when it gets too tense. But argh to my not reading all of the responses so that I’d know better. Oh well. Maybe I can block my memory?

I didn’t want to be specific about the thing that happens on page 305, because I didn’t want to spoil it for everyone else. And if I give you a hint, it still might spoil it. So I’m shutting up.
Except to say that I love the book. And I’m sorry things have been chaotic, but you still rock.

I had pre-ordred WR through Amazon and supposedly it is on it’s way to me as I type. My daughter works at the local Borders so I know she will make sure your book is prominently displayed. ( Your books are one of the few things my 20 year old and I can talk about without it turning into a fight, so HUGE thank you for that)
As far as book covers, I liked the yellow cover but for a second choice the green name and white background. However if it says Crusie or Crusie and any other author, I am buying the book. I have been hooked since Welcome to Tempation. (and I love all these re-issues because I have not been able to find all of your ealry works at the library)

It could be dog poo colored with a cocktail and I’d still read it. Although I don’t actually advise that. I liked the yellow but it looked a tad nursery room with your name in different colors.

I’m going to start it tonight to unwind from moving. I know that I’m going to have to limit myself so that I actually go to sleep at a decent hour, instead of staying up and trying to read the whole thing before falling asleep on it at 3 am.

I like the color scheme of the 3rd version as well. I like the tonal effect from top to bottom and the contrast of your name. It’s lost in the other two. I think the cocktail napkin should be the same as in the second one however. I didn’t even see the tagline in the third version, and it might balance the image better. I don’t know who’s voice the tagline is supposed to be, but the font in 2 and 3 seems more masculine (to me on my computer it looks the same) while the first seems feminine to me.

My sister pre-ordered Wild Ride as a Christmas present for me and she always chooses free shipping so we never know how close to the release date a book will arrrive. When I got home last night it was there! My niece wanted to know if she could read it first. HA, my present, I get to read it first. I can bribe her with it after I am finished with it. Hmmm, what should I make her do? Wash the car? Clean the toilets? This will require some thought. She is fifteen and any form of housework or yardwork is torture in the extreme. Double the pleasure-reading a new Crusie/Mayer book and torturing a teenager, what more can you ask for?

Wow. Yeah, just wow. I loved this one! I’m trying to comment with no spoiling, and I think I’ve managed.
There’s so much going on in this book that I think I need to read it again soon. I actually flipped back quite a few times to confirm things while I was reading it the first time– which for me, means the motifs are working. Or maybe making me work.
Either one is good. The relationships are so, so wonderful, and I really love the place that they all arrive at. It looks like an astonishing juggling feat to have so many characters with so many journeys and turning points, but you managed it all perfectly.
Tell Bob (or does he read the posts here?) many, many heartfelt thanks for all of the gun scenes. Can I say that here without looking like a fruitcake? It’s just that so many writers get things wrong. Even when at first I think Bob’s gotten something wrong, I always find later that there was an ulterior motive that explains it.
Wouldn’t you think that by now whenever something of Bob’s felt wrong I’d start looking for the hidden motive? But I don’t– I fall for it every time. But count me a Weaver fan.
I wish it were warm enough outside to sit on the back porch in my bare feet and eat an orange creamsicle, because that’s the frame of mind that this book puts me in. I’ll have to add it to my Summer Vacation stack.

Preordered WR from B&N online ages ago, then last month when I was in the mall, I popped into the Barnes & Noble store and asked them to reserve a copy for me, because I’d forgotten my preorder *sigh*. I discovered my earlier order when making another online purchse two weeks ago, so decided to just wait until my ordered copy came in. The local B&N got your book in on March 12th! It has been killing me not to pick up that copy, I’ve been out of work over nine months now and just can’t afford two copies. My ordered copy came in yesterday morning and I’ve been having a wonderful time losing myself in Dreamland. Thank you!

Also, I lied. I started WR last night and read till 1:30 AM till I have to cave to sleep. And now, crap, I have to jump ahead to 305 to know what everyone is talking about. I hate not to be in the know…
It fun, it’s funny, it’s creepy, and I’m really enjoying it. I’m particularly sinking into the great descriptions of the park itself. I took a few minutes first to familiarize myself with the map – a bit anal, I know, but I do love me a good bap, er, map. So with that and your great words, I’m really able to visualize the park and am enjoying it all so much. The extra prologue chapter (though I know how you hate prologues) that SMP sent out helped too with getting prepped on the mythology a bit, in case you were wondering.
OK – now I gotta go back to Plavixland.

I don’t think anybody wants a short story on how Andie and North’s marriage went sour in 1982, so I doubt we’ll do it for Maybe This Time. I’m voting for the first of the 3 as my favorite. The balance on it is better and with your name being lighter, allows a viewer to focus on the middle of the cover. Your name is big enough to be seen, but not so dominant in color as to cause confusion in focal point (title/picture). It’s easy to look at. Plus, I like the napkin color balancing the color of the text above your name and that napkin font is the best.
I’m about 2/3 of the way through Wild Ride. Finally hit the “bouyant sorrows” quote. good times.

I also like the third cover.
I’m currently reading Wild Ride. This morning I took the dog to the park and came back to my car to find a long silver screw with a fine point on it wedged into my back tire. The tire was not completely flat. I limped home, put the dog in the house, picked up Wild Ride and headed over to the tire place. I was already pissed off and then more so when I found it would be $400 for two tires. The other rear one was on it’s last legs.
There was an old woman there, seated against the far wall, who wanted to talk. I’d heard her earlier, so I chose a seat a row or two over.
“Hey you,” she yelled. “You. Lady with the green shirt on. Whatcha’ reading?”
I ignored her.
“What’s wrong with her?” she asks, turning to the young Latino woman beside her. “She can’t hear me or somethin? I got a loud voice.”
The Latino woman says she doesn’t speak English (I bet she did, but who could blame her.)
“Lady, I said whatcha reading?”
I was about to show her the cover but knew once I answered it would all be over. So I angled myself slightly away from her and stuck my nose in the book and wondered why she wouldn’t shut the fuck up, and she says to the woman, “My book’s got sex in it. Lots of it.”
I was so thankful that I’d been in such a bad mood and not been drawn into that conversation. But I apologize for not making another sale for you. She would have loved the book, I can hear her now, pimping it all over town. ; )
But now, here’s the really funny thing, I recall reading one of yours and Bob’s other collaborations while waiting to get tires at the same place, I think it was Don’t Look Down. What is with that? You think there might be demons involved?

I forgive you for not flogging the book to that woman.
But I’m not taking responsibility for your tires, babe. You’re on your own there.

My copies that were pre-ordered from Amazon arrived Tuesday. Such a blessing. They were on my porch when I got home from the longest day on Eath and once I’m partially caught up this weekend I’m hoping to sit back and enjoy. Well, once the kidlets are in bed I can read all night long.

My world’s whirring just so — preordered WR last week, bookstore called and I bought it on the fifteenth, read it on the sixteenth, and now I’m very, very happy. You guys got it right. And now I’m playing every John Hiatt cd I own.

If it makes you feel any better, I was pleasantly surprised that my library had WILD RIDE on the shelf today – 3 copies were still there when I came in late in the evening. Now there are only 2 left.
Take care and yes, just breathe

I just got Wild Ride as a reward for not bitching during sneaker shopping (I HATE shopping for shoes, books is a different story). I’m sooo excited, especially since all I’ve read this spring break is Crusie–Maybe This Time and then yesterday the Cinderella Deal.
I can’t wait for Wild Ride.

Okay, here I am, up at 2:30 am because I woke up at 1 am and realized I hadn’t finished my part of my daughter’s application to the Governor’s Institute that is due at school this morning. Got that done and I’m sitting here with the laptop that holds the golden copy of Wild Ride in audio. To listen or not to listen? How bad would it be if I fell asleep at work tomrrow? Because God knows, if I start the dang thing, I won’t be able to stop listening until I’m done. It takes so much longer to listen than to read, dang it! I should have gone with the hard copy. I can’t get that until I head to town for groceries tomorrow. Life sucks. (but I’m insanely happy because I’ve got a Brand New Crusie/Mayer in front of me!)

Laughed out loud at the B&B thing. Probably funnier for knowing where that line came from. Would love the chance to discuss teddy bears with Bob. The post he has up on his blog right now doesn’t seem the appropriate place.

I wondered if anybody would catch that. I put it in as an Easter Egg to the CBs from the first Crusie-Mayer blog.

I like the third of the three similar book-covers for Trust Me on This best. For what it’s worth.

I kinda like the yellow also. I got my copy instantly Tuesday on my Nook but I went into my local B&N and they had one copy in romance which I faced out and in their “New Fiction” aisle they had multiple copies faced out so thumbs up. It’s great I am enjoying it immensely.

OT (yet again.)
@ marly and r. This is the only way I know to contact you. I’m having title troubles. Wanna play? and anyone else – I’m open for a free for all.

Shari S – yeah, I did a little selective rearranging at B&N, too

@Kate G., you bet. Do you have an author’s place online so we won’t annoy the folks here at Ms. Crusie’s place too much? TGIF. We’re meeting the group tonight, so just let me know the particulars. We’ll help all we can and we take it seriously since wagers are involved. But even without the bets, we’d take it seriously.
On topic. It sounds like almost everybody has read Wild Ride. I’m still thinking it would make a great movie. The set design for the park would be something else. And, Ms. Crusie, I hope you put your song list up for the contest book since I spilled the beans on that. Marly says it was a premature something else. She has a mean side. I like it! Usually.

The ghost story. The contest that crashed the site. Have I got this wrong?
