Monday Ticker:
Mar152010
Not nearly fast enough. Argh.
In other news, Wild Ride is in stores Tuesday, May March 16th. I know, who knew? For background on the book, see the Crusie-Mayer site. I just sent Mollie the page on the mythology (we made most of it up) so that may not be posted yet, but information on the Story, People, and Places (including a map) is all there, plus a Reader’s Guide which we’ll be using in the book discussion on the Cherry Forums which I think is April 1. Yes, I know I have to proofread the pages. I thought I did but I was mistaken. Wait until Wednesday to point out the errors, please.
And now, back to the book in progress. Liz has just been sort-of-arrested for murder. She is not happy.

BTW, that snail looks almost half-way. That’s good, right? And arrest sounds like a good thing (in a fictional character).

She’s sleeping with the arresting officer and he has handcuffs. There should be comic gold in there somewhere, but right now it’s just pathetic. It would have to work up to blowing-dead-bears status. Such is the life of first drafts. “Officer, arrest that woman!” [Something funny with handcuffs here. Do not be pathetic.]

Before I read Bet Me, I would have said one bratwurst scene in a book is one bratwurst scene too many. Now . . . if *you* see handcuff scenes being a running joke, well, go for it. I trust you implicitly. (wry grin) how much does Liz trust Mr. Police Officer, though? Is it a little early in the relationship to be introducing handcuffs? No . . . don’t answer that. Surprise me!
LOLOLOL! Thinking about how I wouldn’t want my husband to find out I was discussing handcuffs and sexuality in a public forum.

My first book of yours was “Welcome to Temptation”. Great pleasure and fun. Besides, I was amazed how you use English, so sharp, short and juicy. I learned more then any dictionary can give of modern English language of modern clever and humorous woman. Plus so much in common with your books’ characters.
Now I found your blog. What a great find! All the best to you in your creativity and thank you so much.

Welcome, Irina!
Although I’m not sure Crusie English is the way to go. It’s not, uh, standard usage. Lots of southern Ohio-isms. Plus obscenity. It could get you thrown out of some very nice places.

Congratulations, you’re a Cherry.
The Cherry Forums are open to everyone. You have to register to get into the writer’s section because people talk about their work there, but I’m pretty sure for the Book Clubs you just show up and chime in. I’ll put up a reminder when it gets closer to the date: Apr 1 to 6 in the Book Club section (Alyssa Day is in there now with the newest in her Atlantis series).
And thank you for the kind words.

(-: You know, if we wanted Hemingway, we’d read Hemingway.
I think the earliest book I’ve read of yours is The Cinderella Deal, and you already have a lovely voice in it. And you’ve managed to keep it, although on the blog we watch you struggle at starving that voice, and beating it into some sort of fantasy Thin Voice. And you never quite succeed, thank all the gods and muses, and deliver prose that is rich and beautiful and fulsome.
I dunno, you work hard at fighting flab, and good job. But don’t attack the curves and valleys of your prose.

So Jenny, how’s your sense of humor these days? I ask as I just bought Wild Ride through Amazon, Kindle version. While the book itself seems to be fine, the author listing in the meta data is uhm, off. The authors are listed as “Jennifer Mayer, Bob Crusie”. That’s quite a “ride”.

Hey, ready made pen names.
But seriously, my day started badly when I discovered where my tax refund was going to have to go (why did I think home ownership was a good idea?) and the bright spot was knowing that, since I was off to meet with repairpersons anyway, I could get to B&N that much sooner. The acknowledgments were a really nice surprise on a day when I can use one.
The book really is a lot of fun. I keeping coming across new favorite lines. A really fun read, lots of great dialog, even the demons are entertaining.
FYI to everyone, the crusiemayer.com website also has a pdf for the prequel, if you haven’t read that yet.

On pg 262 of WILD RIDE and I can tell you, it has improved my lousy week no end. Clearly, you need a Jenny Crusie of your own. Do you need me to stalk you with more chocolate? ‘Cause I’m just the girl to do it.
My favorite lines so far:
“I’m drowning my sorrows,” Mab said, enunciating clearly.
“How’s that going?”
“Not too well.” She gazed at the empty cups sadly. “The little suckers are buoyant as all hell.”"
Ain’t that the truth!!!
Don’t know if it will do anything to improve your lousy week, but I am about to go blog about the book to my many thousands (well, demi-hundreds) of avid followers. All of whom read. And I’m going to mention it to the 40+ people taking my current online writing class as well (since the topic is writing new and interesting paranormal characters).
And then I’m going to go back to reading it, which is best of all.

I had to work late tonight (GRRR) – my treat for myself is to run in to the bookstore on the way home and pick up Wild Ride. I will always be eternally grateful to Bob Mayer because I met him at a writer’s workshop years ago and he introduced me to your books. We need more Crusie books to be stocked in stored down here in middle GA. But thanks to Amazon, I now have them all… can’t wait to read the latest. Can’t wait to meet Liz. either.

Humpf, humpf I say. Here on the left coast my local Borders did NOT have WR out. Don’t know if they had it in back because they refused to go look (“we have 10 pallets of books back there and everything that was supposed to be “laid down” today is out) – HA!!
Sooo, I drove many, many, many miles through rain, sleet, snow, and hail uphill both going and coming back to get to the Barnes and Noble in the next city, and got my copy – after the very helpful clerk went in the back and searched. I’m beginning to wonder about distribution from the right coast to the left coast. I think I will use Amazon more often…
Oh – and there is no living with McB now, but she deserves her 15 minutes. . .

Lou, I had a similar experience here in SoCal. Normally the Borders is way better than the B&N but I shopped at B&N after getting a great gift cert, which is how I know. But it was a good thing I called ahead. Either I bought the last copy or they didn’t have Wild Ride out. I checked EVERY new-book display, the mystery section, the romance section, the paranormal romance display, the new releases – no Wild Ride, no holes in the display. So I’m kinda wondering how they expect it to sell. Plus, it was full price. I’d printed out a backup coupon to use on an auxilliary paperback, but had to use it on Wild Ride, which for the record, was $14 if purchased from Border’s online but $25 in the store. I’m thinking of a sternly worded letter… But I do, through some help over the phone that took about ten minutes on hold, have my copy. Whew!

@ Lou, Your problem was my problem, even here in the Midwest. This is exactly why I bought a Kindle. This seems to be a growing problem. If the bookstores want to succeed, they need to get the stock out.

Got mine last night at B&N, but they only had ONE copy (I’m guessing/hoping it was because all the others had already sold out by 5:45 p.m.) in the fiction section.
Great read so far. Many laugh-out-loud lines.

My copy was $14.06 from Amazon and it WAS there when I got home last night! But Amazon did not send hot coffee or a scone, so McB may have the better of me (although there was still pie left from Pi Day).
I read half of it before bed and experimented with going to sleep before it was done (having stayed up late reading the PREVIOUS night, due to poor planning) and it was still there when I got up! I wish I could say that I will hitherto observe bedtime, but it was probably the result of Lenten discipline and won’t last. So I finished it before breakfast, and it was terrific! Lots of great dialogue, some unexpected twists, and really interesting demons.
Very satisfying. I didn’t have time to read it again, yet (I have to work as well as sleep – life is SO unreasonable!), but I’m sure I’ll love it at least as much the second time through.
I’m glad I read the prequel yesterday, while waiting for the insurance agent to call. Much better than doing it as a prologue, but I think it was good background to the story.

Bus came just as I got to the stop and reading on the bus makes me queasy so it’s going to be my St. patrick’s day celebration read. Mab sounds almost Irish, right?
