Honest Movie Posters
Mar102010
I love movie posters. I must have a dozen of my faves framed, and there are a lot more than those that attain the level of art. But a lot of the time, they’re just misleading. A bad one can kill a good movie–some idiot put a giant thumb on the Innerspace poster and millions of people missed one of the funniest movies ever, plus Dennis Quaid, nude from behind–and a good one can become iconic overnight. The worst ones, though, are the ones that lie to you. College Humor revised some posters for some of the Oscar-nominated films this year so moviegoers would know what they were plunking down their cash for. Most of them are good (“Don’t bring a date. Seriously.”) but this one made me laugh because I’m such a Pixar groupie:

Go here for the rest. Oh, and here’s the trailer for Innerspace back in 1987 (yes, that’s Meg Ryan playing The Girl):
Also, Martin Short has no shame:
And finally, the poster:

(Because when you’ve got a young Dennis Quaid, Meg Ryan, and Martin Short in a movie, what you want to showcase on your poster is a BIG THUMB.)

Go, Pixar!!!! Innerspace is a very funny movie. Martin Short has that rubber face thing that cracks me up. Tom Philip on College Humor is good, too. He did a “having a date over to your place” piece where the walls and tv and bed and computer, etc. all comment. Really funny.
Ms. Crusie, I understand I have to thank you for the 120 times I’ve listened to “Layla” over the last few nights. Not that I don’t enjoy it – I do. Huge Clapton fan. But now I’ve danced to it about 25 of those times and my feet are killing me. And thank you for the extra beers, too. No complaints, there. Or anywhere, really. But now I have got to read this book.

It wasn’t even close to twenty-five. I’ll admit I’ve been playing a lot of genius guitarist Eric Clapton and a little Jackson Browne, but I have my reasons. Anyway, I wanted to see how you’d look dancing to LAYLA with a long-necked beer in your hand. You look damn good, Hon.
Dear Jenny, I am so glad there’s more Alice to come. I adore those kids and Isolde is a fabulous character. Then there’s Lydia who reminds me a little of R.’s mother. I’ve certainly seen the crocodile smile before. I love the book and I love the ending. I couldn’t find anything remotely resembling dead bears. It’s just wonderful. I’m very, very grateful to St. Martin’s Press.

Oh, Martin short, he’s just as funny off screen too. His kid and mine played flag football in the nineties in a park in Pacific Palisades. We women waited on the sidelines, with bated breath, for Martin to come along and entertain us. There’s one of his comedy skits that I love, done with a slight lisp and one of the lines goes something like this: “I have 57 tattooos on my body, if you count Elizabeth Taylor and her eight husbands as one.” He’s a riot.
Now I want to see Innerspace again.

I have a question for the other people who got copies of Maybe This Time: am I the only one having fits trying to write comments to send in? I received my copy Saturday, read it in one sitting, and loved it, love Andie, love North. Normally, I never have trouble spitting out my opinion, in fact, it’s keeping my mouth shut that’s usually the challenge. But everything I type sounds completely idiotic to me. I’ve typed and deleted probably twenty comments. This is just ridiculous!

OK, I just sent my comments to Mollie, hopefully they’re helpful. Honestly, I can’t really imagine booksellers needing to be convinced to carry your books- I would think they’d be begging for them.
I’ve been struggling to hold this in, but restraint is really not my strong suit… when you said you were changing the ending, was that before or after the manuscript we received? If not, do the changes include adding in more of North’s POV at the end? I understand if you can’t answer this, I’m not sure how appropriate this question is here. Sorry, in advance, if I’ve erred.
On March 10, 2010 at 11:48 pm Jenny said...
I didn’t do a whole lot to the ending on the copy edit because I cannot figure out how to fix it. I don’t want to add anything else because I think it drags now. Also, I’m in Liz world now so it’s hard to go back there. But I still have one more crack at it when I get the galleys, so I’ll look at North’s POV. I did kind of lose him at the end didn’t I?

I didn’t really mind so much. To me the real dominate relationship in the story was that of Andie and the kids, not Andie and North.

Wow, I loved the ending. If there was dragging, I never noticed. Without giving too much away, there were hints of what was coming, but it still happened so suddenly that the suspense was right there. And then there was North, who knew. That was a hero moment for me. Where X landed? Perfect. Justice and humor and two loose end tied up neatly.

Somebody wondered why the publisher would want the quotes, since booksellers should be standing in line for a Crusie book and he or she was right. I don’t get it either.
On March 11, 2010 at 11:46 am Jenny said...
It goes like this:
You need a large print run (lots of books printed) to do well.
The print run is dependent upon the number of books the booksellers order.
For the past couple of years, booksellers have been ordering based on the number of books sold previously. This is not a good idea for many reasons, and it’s resulted in lower sales, so anything that will encourage a bookstore buyer to buy more is a good idea.
In addition, my last solo was out six years ago which means my solo numbers are meaningless which means they only have the collabs to go on and the collab numbers are a lot lower.
Thus the extra push to get the buyers of bookstore stock to ignore the numbers and order lots of copies.

Any tips or guidance for comments that would be the most helpful? I absolutely LOVED the book! All of it! I’m struggling with the comments. I wanted the book because I’m a fanatic about your books and I can’t imagine bookstores not stocking lots of copies of a new one, but then once I got it I realized that I’m a reader, not a writer and nothing I’ve written so far sounds right. Ugh!
On March 11, 2010 at 9:21 pm Carol Anne said...
The colab numbers a lot lower? That is just crazy. What about the re-release numbers? What about the re-releases of books purchased by people who have just discovered you in the last few years? Don’t they count? What about all of us who have purchased books still in print even if they were published a few years ago? Like BET ME, of which I have 2 hardcopies, an unabridged audio book, 2 papers backs, and I purchase the book as a gift, sometimes, just because.
I know the publishing world is going through “how do we make money in this brave new world” but, seriously, your name alone or with Bob or with Krissie and Lani must account for some confidence in how well your book should sell. Just crazy thinking. Seriously!

But to tell the truth, I don’t mind too much. My scroll button works pretty well. And now I know I should stock up on some Eric Clapton before the book comes out. (-:.

Is there a reason so many authors seem to dislike Amazon? Would it be better for the writing community if people bought books at Borders or Barnes and Noble?
Personally, I adore Amazon- everything in my house comes from there. Every item of clothing, dishes, most of my groceries, cleaning supplies, paper goods. I can get recycled, chlorine-free papertowels there for $1.50/roll- do you know how much those cost at Whole Foods? And shoes! Literally thousands of size 7, D-width shoes with free shipping, as opposed to the 2 or 3 pairs I can choose from in a store. Hmm, I’d better stop now.
But anyway, I can get my books elsewhere, if that would be better.

I buy all kinds of stuff on Amazon. And I’m almost positive they report to the NYT so it’s fine for our careers if you buy your books there.
There have been a couple of bad things about Amazon in the past. One is that they took back a book from Kindles which is why I will never buy one. I don’t want any business being able to come into my electronics and move things around or remove them. I’ll wait for the iPad and then if Jobs starting screwing with my content, I’ll give him the heave ho, too.
The other thing was Amazon’s attempts at pricefixing e-books which sounded like a wonderful thing for readers but was really a power grab that would have had very bad consequences down the road.
But they’re still a great place to buy things.

I definitely don’t want to interrupt the writing process, but at one of the fan sites I frequent, there’s a “conference” called “snerkers” where people who got a sneak peek at the book in question (or just got it early — some conferences have a moratorium on book discussion for three months after publication to prevent spoilers) go to that place and discuss.
So, I was thinking something like just posting “Maybe This Time pre-publication discussion”. That way, the people who have the ARCs can discuss to their hearts’ content, those of us who just can’t wait can sneak a peek, and those of us who are “Saving Themselves for the Publication Night” can avoid the tempation. Not a real blog post (although those are great too), just a placeholder so your commenters can comment.
But, anything works for me. Although, when I finally get Wild Ride, (-: I’m going to want to post and discuss somewhere. Only a few more days . . . .

That’s the reason numbers on Amazon aren’t a good indication of how a book sells. If it’s a new book, most people just go to the store and buy it.
But if it’s an old book or a hard to find book, Amazon rocks. That’s where the majority of their business is.

Maybe more people are ordering Wild Ride than they expected, they have all the copies stored in one warehouse, and can only ship from that warehouse at a certain speed? Maybe they are shipping in order of when the order was received? It doesn’t make much sense, but I can’t think of another reason.
They claim to be shipping mine on the 16th, and I ordered it on January 2nd.

Maybe this helps answer the question, at least at Chapters in Canada, the book is in the back ready for sale on release date. If you request the book and they have it, they will sell it to you unless there is a hold by the publisher not to sell the book until the release date. EG: Potter books.

Did you read this one? The comments were even funnier than the article.

I don’t know why, but I didn’t expect the prequel to Wild Ride to be a HUGE, HUGE spoiler. Unless that’s reveiled in the first few scenes, but I doubt it will be. Does SMP not think you and Bob are good enough writers that you’ve got to hit us over the head with this information before we get our hands on your book? Love you and Bob but I’m not happy that they made you write it and because I read it. Tell SMP that next time they should use spoiler warnings.

It didn’t seem like much of a spoiler to me. Have you read the first chapter of Wild Ride? It’s been up on Bob Mayer’s site for a couple of months. So, Wild Night explained some particulars, but not anything materially significant that wasn’t obvious from the first Chapter of Wild Ride.
Actually, I found Wild Night to be a big relief. Petra’s expectations reassured me that Ethan is not going to be another Tom. I would really not like that, and I didn’t want to spend the whole book unhappy, worried about it.
I think this is going to be *great*.

The only spoiler in “Wild Night,” I think, is the weirdness around the two conceptions, and I’m pretty sure that’s revealed by the middle of the book.
Not sure how to do a prequel without giving away the back story that’s revealed along the way in the book since a prequel is by definition back story. The prequel doesn’t have anything to do with the main plot of Wild Ride, so I’m still fine with it. OTOH, if you don’t want the back story given away, don’t read prequels.
