Argh Posts: A Poll

Mar22010

I am curious about the reading preferences of Argh People, so there’s a new poll up so I can get a feel for what’s working here and what isn’t. You can select as many answers as you want or none at all (I should probably have put in an “I hate all your posts” but then why is that person reading? so no). I’m just curious as to which kinds of posts you think we get too many of and which kinds you’d like to see more of. So . . . a poll!

Meanwhile, I’m writing Lavender. She’s still alive, so you know I haven’t gotten to the halfway point yet.

And in other news, I just sprained my ankle, so there’s either going to be a lot of I’m-stuck-on-the-chaise-so-I-think-I’ll-ramble posts or a long silence while Lani waits on me hand and foot. That Lucy March, she’s a keeper.

On the plus side the great thing about a sprained ankle is that the pain all happens way at the other end of you, so your brain can be occupied elsewhere. I quite fancy a sprained ankle so I can catch up with “Mad Men” and some reading. Feel better…

For some reason it never worked that way for me. :-) I sprained my ankles so many times when I was a teenager, and even on into college. And Tylenol never seemed to do much more than cut the pain a little, so the only real escape was blessed sleep when I could get it. But you know, they have much better over-the-counter pain relievers now.

Here’s hoping it’s a mild sprain that won’t give you much pain, and that you’ll be able to spend some time peacefully contemplating. I sometimes wondered if my injuries weren’t somebody’s way of getting me to stop my headlong dash through life and make sure I was thinking through the things that needed to be thought through.

I have a question about the RSS feeds, are they supposed to send an email immediately? Mine seem to come in over night so that I get yesterday’s posts.

Hope the ankle is better soon,,,,but do have some stuck on the chaise rambles.

This is from Mollie because I don’t know RSS from ESL:

“Updates from the Argh Ink that are sent via email are delivered each day at the same time – not as the posts are published. So, yes, there is sort of a delay – but it is more like a schedule.

I’ve updated Argh subscription settings so that emails are now sent out everyday between 3 and 5PM EST (GMT-05:00).

That means east coasters are sent out updates for the day at the end of the work day (assuming the post published before 3PM) and posts published that night won’t be delivered until the next end of day.

For quicker delivery of posts, I would suggest people subscribe via RSS reader.”

If you are having trouble with your RSS feeds, check your settings. They can be set to update the feeds anywhere from “every hour” to “every 24 hours”. I have changed mine so they all update every hour (that’s in theory; actually, I still find they are several hours behind most of the time).

Hope this helps.

RSS feeds can be set as to how often they send; also, the feed reader I use (RSS Bandit) has a button for Update All Feeds, so if I’m on the computer I can get the most current stuff at will.

LOVE getting stuff this way. (It took about a year to actually get around to customizing it well, but it–as are other RSS readers–is highly customizable.

Good luck with your ankle. Was it the dogs? I swear my cat will be responsible for me breaking/spraining something one of these days but he’ll be so damn cute and full of purrs that I won’t be able to be mad at him.
I voted for all the posts because I do enjoy them all (the recommendations got me to try Glee) but I wish we could have ranked them. The recommendations would have been the lowest (I like them, esp bc Glee) and highest would have been writing for writers. It feels like (and I mean this in a good way, I think I said something similar once at a talk you and Bob gave in Cinci and you looked offended) hearing one of the coolest professors talk because it makes it seem possible. You deconstruct the mystery about “process” and make it make sense in this way that makes my brain want to try. You’re the awesome English/liberal arts professor that makes creativity seem possible and not just reserved for the elites.

I enjoy pretty much anything you care to share. But I thought I’d mention that even though I’m not at all a writer, I do enjoy reading the craft stuff, because it gives me a backstage peek into the writing process (beyond “think of a word. write it down. repeat.”), and helps me to appreciate the structure and layers and subtleties of your books.

I have to agree with Bethany-I love them all. I think you have to perfect mix right now. I’m not a writer but I enjoy the posts for writers because they provide a peek into an area I am unfamiliar with. The personal stuff parallels my own life to a scary degree (divorced sister and her kids moved in upon her divorce and I now live in a house overrun with kids and spoiled pets). It is all just great and I would hate to see it change. My advice, don’t mess with perfection.

Health At Every Size is the way to go :-)

I did learn something from my week on the Fresh Diet food:
(1) I am less likely to feel deprived throughout the day if my first meal has protein and fat. The only day I didn’t cheat was the day they gave me an omelet for breakfast plus two pieces of bread to sandwich it between. This was a breakthrough for me because I tend to eat only cereal/oatmeal/toast/waffles/pancakes/name-your-carb for breakfast.
(2) Portion control is difficult but rewarding over time, because my stomach actually shrank down slightly, which in turn meant that I didn’t feel hungry as easily.

With regard to the poll, I love writing posts that are about the craft, but I’m not so much for gadget things like the counter. The counter especially makes me feel a bit guilty for being among those who are pressuring you by thinking, “When is the new Crusie going to come out?!” all the time with such intensity that I’m pretty sure the brainwaves are affecting your sleep.

The opening phrase of Dorothy Dunnett’s farcial novel _Dolly and the Singing Bird_ is “Men with bifocal glasses, I spit.” The words bring a smile to all Dunnett fans and we actually call the occasional gatherings of fans “Spits”. Perhaps you had to be there. In any case, the quote and all the posts make me smile and that is very good indeed. I checked each choice because I enjoy them all for different reasons. One regret that I have is not having a chance to learn the language and structure of the writing craft for fiction before my late husband died. We would have have great “discussions” about them and I could better have shared his world. So, yes, keep them up when you can, I love the dogs, the kids, the videos nsm because I’m a word person and I even like the collages which considering I do not get information thru images is pretty amazing. Thanks for them all.

Dieting does not work for me at all but healthier eating does. And if I eat healthy stuff regularly, I don’t get hungry and go for the unhealthy stuff (like when I don’t bring lunch, it’s Cheetohs by default). So eating healthfully can be a back door into “dieting” (getting more nutritional bang for your calorie buck, as it were). Good luck!!

Nope, the dogs are innocent. Of that. I just came down on it wrong and it twisted and I heard something crack. But I actually don’t think it’s a sprain. I’ve had it on ice for about three hours and I’m still hobbling but it’s nothing like the bad sprains I’ve had in the past, so I’m thinking, everything’s going to be fine. A day with ice and elevation and I’m back on my feet.
But thank you all for the sympathy. Sympathy is ALWAYS good.

You may want to try heat instead of ice. Heat increases blood flow which decreases inflammation. Inflammation is always the enemy – especially with a sprain. The longer the inflammation stays the higher the likelihood of scar tissue. Heat also makes it feel so much better!

There are times for ice, but they are rare. If you think about the nature of ice, which is to slow things down or freeze them, it doesn’t seem like a natural choice for joints. You don’t want to freeze up your joints.

Elevating the injury above heart level is also helpful. I know I just opened myself up to a possible snarky comment, but it’s solid advice. I can handle the snark ;)

Six years of acupuncture and eastern medicine changed a lot for me. Now I’m the super annoying person relaying that info to the world one ankle at a time.

Wow! I’m glad to hear someone say heat is good. When my son was a toddler, he sat on my legs and my knee hyper-extended. I kept icing it, and I dreaded the ice pack. About two weeks later we went away for a long weekend and the hotel had da hot tub. I soaked and did gentle movements and my knee finally started to ease up and recover. Yes, it had been a few weeks later, but from other injuries I’ve had, I’ve often felt more comfortable with heat, and dreaded icing. But I have always been told by everyone to ice, ice, ice. :)

And, Jenny, I forgot to say speedy recovery!

Ditto on the “I like it all”. The variety is great – I print every post for anything to do with writing, but it would be hard to choose it over reader’s. Have to admit, it’s the “Random Sundays” we read out loud and laugh over, but I also like to be directed to anything else on the Web that I might miss otherwise. For instance, we hadn’t seen the “Save Scooter” ad. We DVR a lot and fast forward thru commercials. If you hadn’t shown us that one, R. would never have come home on Valentine’s Day with a stuffed rabbit and two balloons. Best Valentine’s Day ever.

Did R discover Jenny on his own, or did you introduce him to her books? (He has read them, right?) I’m asking because I’m slowly trying to talk my boyfriend into reading a Crusie novel. Sierra, long car trips and unabridged audio tapes and cd’s. You could say he started out as a captive audience. The first two we listened to were Don’t Look Down and Agnes, because I thought he’d like the “Bob” aspect. Then WTT and FI and BM. The only book he’s actually sat down and read was Wild Ride, but I have hopes for others that aren’t out in audio yet. Or, not out in unabridged versions. I’d read him some of the posts on the blog here, but he didn’t dive in until Jenny asked for title suggestions. Then he drove me crazy for awhile. Now he’s comfortable here and I’m so glad. We have other common ground, but this one has huge benefits, and I don’t just mean the gifts. Tell your boyfriend he won’t be sorry.

I love my mother dearly, but she has no sense of boundaries, and whenever she comes to visit, I just wait to see what she will decide could be “better” arranged, organized, whatever. It’s a running joke between my sister and me, that when Mama comes to visit, something’s going to be fixed that wasn’t broken. Sadly, I have to admit that sometimes her new arrangements are better than whatever haphazard way I had things, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating–after all, I chose that haphazard way I had things. But, it’s either accept it as an annoying but unchangeable quirk of hers, or go crazy.

Argh. My mother starts with “what you need is” and she’ll buy me “helpful” things. Uh, mom, the reason I didn’t own a can of Manwich before was that I don’t make Manwiches. And that can? Serves 4-6. I am one. I buy things that serve one, maybe two. And just because you don’t see something laying about where you can trip on it doesn’t mean I don’t own it, or my preferred version of it. I don’t need nail clippers; I have 3 or 5 of them, I just use nail scissors, so they’re all on the top shelf in a box. So when I come home to find a selection of new “things I need” I mostly just get exasperated – especially since I’m trying to declutter and more stuff is almost never helpful to decluttering.

However, if someone came over and alphabetized my stuff, I’d probably kiss them. After I get over my cold once and for all. But I take your point, I’d prefer they ask me first. My guest quirk is that I clean kitchens and scrub sinks. I might make you feel like a lousy housekeeper (you’re not) but I don’t reorg them! yeesh.

So I can’t take credit for the gift ideas. Lately, they mostly all come from here. So, thanks everybody. The other day I was trying to find a way to tell you about your books and the effect some of the scenes have. It was after Marly talked about one of the books. I haven’t read that one and I’m still trying to say this without offending anyone, but I think this is a great secret weapon. I don’t mean weapon, exactly. I was going to mention it to the other guys when we were title brainstorming, but I didn’t. Here it is. Guys should dump their porn collections (not that I have one, ok I do but it’s small) because your books do a better job. Not that there’s any porn in them. That’s the point. Sometimes they do what guys hope porn will. I have to get back or I’d explain this better. But, on behalf of all men, thanks. Like Arnold, I’ll be back. Hey, that’s just one thing about your books. From me, he got a card and a gently used DVD boxed set of all “The Thin Man” movies from ebay. That was pretty good, but Scooter was GREAT. He’s very happy that you thought he was clever. So, Christmas and Valentine’s presents both originated here. Can’t wait till my birthday. Really glad the ankle is better.

Hey – I’m real! That sounds weird. The only person who thinks I’m too good to be true is my mother. Of course, she’s very smart. Ha! Scooter was a no-brainer. Marly thought it was funny. OK, me too, and we forwarded it to just about everybody we know. The Thin Man dvd’s are great if you haven’t seen them. William Powell is terrific, suave and deboner, as they say. He has great comic timing and the screenplays are decent representations of Dashiel Hammett. There are 5 Thin Man movies but only one book from Hammett. Probably TMI. But worth a look.

So I voted for everything in the poll, but I agree with earlier posts that I would have preferred to rate them, but whatever. Your link recommends are great – I’ve added more than one to my RSS feed – but it’s the Randoms and the personal stuff that get me guffawing at my keyboard and I often print them out to share or email the link to friends. Hey Jenny, Sorry to hear about your ankle. It stinks to be laid up.

This is totally off topic – and doesn’t really belong here. I know it and I’m apologizing a head of time. I’m kind of thinking you won’t mind I said this here. I’m having a rotten day having discovered that my 16 year old A-student daughter is tripling my car insurance and trying to get quotes is a bummer. All apples and oranges and I can’t afford any of it anyway.

But now I’ve gotten the most devistating news (other than the death of a family memeber – which I realize is truly devistating news). My publisher who tells me I’m a fabulous writer is not even going to LOOK at my sequel because moonlighting didn’t sell well enough. And I know it’s because I am so lousy at self-promotion – although she was kind and said she thinks it’s because I live in a rural area with few libraries and bookstores. I know I haven’t tried hard enough and I’m crying over my keyboard in the bedcroom because my kids have enough to deal with without being worried about me.

And it just SUCKS.

I can’t call a friend and pour out my guts because I’m crying so hard that they’ll think one of the dogs died. Or one of the kids. Same thing.

It wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t know it was my own damn fault. I should have tried harder.

I’m not sweet, just selfish. The book looks interesting (I clicked your name to see your site and liked the description) which means a sequel would be cool. Didn’t Jenny or Bob write about how marketing is awful for writers because they’re almost naturally all introverts when it comes to their creations? Very few other businesses run that way and I think it sucks for writers that they’re supposed to do all their own promotion because it’s not their area of expertise. I think that’s a crappy way to run the system. It’s so difficult for a good book to get recognized in the bookstore. I consider myself a fairly good reader, but I know I tend to stick to the authors I know or those friends have suggested to me. I don’t know the research about the best ways to promote books when it’s difficult for the author to do a book tour. I’d assume twitter give aways and previews of chapters to get people hooked, but I honestly have no idea. I specialize in other types of promotion (health messages, exciting stuff, jk). Why not email tonight or tomorrow to say “I understand what you said on the phone but I’d like to know if there’s anything I can do now to promote my book to the threshhold that would allow you to consider my sequel” or something better worded. You’re the writer, not me :)

Yes, it’s Moonlighting in Vermont. I’m glad you liked it Marly, I didn’t know anyone here had heard of it! It can be ordered from the publisher (Mainly Murder Press) or Amazon, any bookstore can order it from the regular distributors.

It’s a very small press and they expect thier Authors to promote, promote, promote. They send out a catalog to book stores and libraries, but it’s print on demand so it has to be ordered before it gets on a book shelf.

You know the crazy thing. They expect the most sales from the writer’s local region. But when I talk to the local bookstores they say that it’s difficult to sell local authors. It’s enough to make me pull out all my hair!!

And thank you all for being wonderful and supportive. It’s fabulous that there are such great people in the world. I actually managed a smile reading your posts!

So glad I was off today. Kate, I just ordered your book on Amazon. I had read it, but a friend had lent it to me. This is a lesson to me, as an aspiring writer. I had made a mental note to get it for myself, but it slipped my mind. From now on – when I love a book, if I don’t have it, I’m getting it right away. I’m still a long way off from even thinking about a publisher, but if I ever do get published, I’m going to need the same thing from readers. This was a wake-up call and I’m going to do better.

Okay, first of all, marketing is NOT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
You write the books, the publisher sells them.
If the book gets lousy reviews, it’s your head on the block.
If the book gets lousy sales, IT’S THE PUBLISHER’S FAULT.
I cannot stress this enough. It is the publisher’s responsibility to make the book public; that’s why he’s called “the publisher.” Making the book public is not just throwing it out there and hoping it sticks. They have to market it to the right audience, starting with getting enough copies into the bookstores.
Add to that the lousy economy and nobody is selling well.

Kate, this is neither your fault nor your responsibility. They failed you. It’s happened to just about everybody I know. Jayne Anne Krentz hit this wall, changed her name to Amanda Quick, came back roaring, and now her Krentz contemps sell just as briskly as her historicals. Lani’s reinventing herself as Lucy. Some people struggle and struggle and then suddenly hit it out of the park when a publisher finally gets it right.
Don’t take responsibility for this. Don’t make this your failure when it’s not. I know it’s tough, I’m not discounting how painful this is, but truly, it’s not your responsibility to sell the book unless you’re self-publishing.

Of course, in publishing, when the publisher fails, the author gets the heave, but that’s show business. ARGH.

I checked out the publisher web site. It does look like a small press, with a different publishing model (described on their web site) than most traditional publishers. I’m going to come right out and say that I suspect they don’t yet have the resources to publicize well, and their publishing model is going to make it difficult for many mainstream bookstores to stock the title for business reasons. So Kate, I think you need to get yourself an agent (if you don’t have one already) and find yourself a new publisher, one who support your books as they deserve to be. It’ll probably be a long and hard process, but we love you and believe in you, and you can send all of your rejection letters to us. We’ll build a bonfire to burn them in and dance around it. Widdershins, if we need to. And in the meantime we’ll buy the heck out of your currently available book. :-)

If you stopped writing any of the different types of posts, I would miss them very much, so I voted for them all.

The writing for readers probably gets me most excited. But the writing for writers makes me the most happy, because I really do want to write, and I have bits and pieces of book written, and I think about it quite a bit. It bothered me for a while that I wasn’t really getting anywhere with it, but I’ve decided that’s not actually the case. I’m not at a place in life right now where I can get ten minutes without interruption, and I don’t think most people can get much productive writing done under those circumstances. But I take the story in my head (which is where I can work with it the most, while doing other, mindless things) and I incorporate what I learn from you and others, and the story gets better. Someday, when I don’t have so many people dependent upon me- and that day will come- I will just sit down and write it all down. In the meantime I enjoy where I am, and remember to appreciate what I have, and keep in mind that as a bonus it is all life research I’ll be able to draw on in the future. :-)

Jenny, I’m so sorry about your ankle, that’s very frustrating. My fiance did snapped three ligaments in his ankle last year, and what he found helpful was putting it in a bucket of ice water for ten minutes, then putting it in a bucket of hot water for ten minutes, then the ice water again. It stimulated all the blood to go there and get working on the swelling it. (But he had to have port or whisky while it was in the ice water).
Also – may I ask a question? I am rereading Don’t Look Down and much as I love it, when I get to the end I am usually confused about whether Bryce and Althea are in with the bad guys or not, or whether they’re just going with whatever flow looks the most advantageous at the time. And do they get married? Usually I am so happy with the Lucy/Wilder ending that I don’t care, but I’d kind of like to know.

A good massage gets the blood flowing even with a sprained ankle, had one of those too before the air cast. Cast just supports the ankle, works for me.
Hope the ankle heals quickly.

Cheers to everyone, especially to Kate G. Marly & R – big, big smile.
Have to get back to work now – takes a while to read all of you.

I voted for all too- who wouldn’t? Between them we get insights, tips, sneak previews, hot topics and the reassurance that it’s okay to be any number of things. Maybe I especially love the writerly stuff, because it’s given me the courage to just do it and to know that you don’t have to be published to be a ‘proper writer’. Hope your ankle, and its owner are being massaged , pampered and treated with love and respect.

So as I read all the comments, I realized I had things to say and used the REPLY button instead of the SUBMIT at the end but after doing that a couple of times, I realize if someone doesn’t return to RE-read the comments, they may miss it.

I need more caffeine, I swear.

Jenny: I voted for everything, but wish I’d only voted for writing for writers as it’s my favorite of all you write (I said this in a comment but wanted it down at the bottom of the feed too, just in case no one re-reads comments) and I really hope your ankle gets better — BTDT and a boobload of “poor baby” sent your way!

I’m not going to lie I don’t really like the stuff for writers. I mean it’s easy enough to just skim and realize that I don’t want to read it, so it’s not really a bother. The thing is I really don’t want to read them. I’m an English minor and my professor’s were such hardasses that when I read stuff on how to write my mind goes all PTSD on me. It’s a personal thing, but I can see where getting advice from you can be pretty awesome for aspiring writers. This seems like a really nice creative group of people helping each other out. I dig that, but then I feel left out because I suck at writing and I can’t really join the conversation. Well now that I’ve rambled I gotta agree with a lot of the other people I think you have a nice mix of stuff for everyone to enjoy. Failbook still makes me laugh.

Just sayin’, the dogs needed their own clicky-box. I voted for all, but I want to vote for the dogs twice.
