What made you keep Bet Me for 15 years? The reason I ask is I’ve have four or five book ideas that didn’t get passed a few scenes before I lost interest and gave up. I have a low tenacity threshold.

I think Slow Men is dead. I’m doing what I wanted to do structurally in that book with the Liz books.
You Again is hibernating. I would not be surprised to see it pop up again, but I also would not be surprised if it didn’t. Bet Me sat for fifteen years.

When I submit essays or press releases to magazines, they give me a character limit. When I talk to my publisher, it’s about standard pages. The word count I do is just for myself.

For what I do, the count doesn’t have to be that precise. Most of my books are contracted at 100,000 words, but I can go 10% either way, so they’re 90,000 to 110,000, by contract. The Liz books are contracted for 50,000 words because I couldn’t tell them how long they’d turn out to be, but Jen says I can go as high as I want. So the difference between Scrivener and Word is pretty much irrelevant for my purposes. I just need a ballpark number.

I’ve got four Liz books under contract, and then Jen wants to see the Alice and Nadine proposals, plus there’s the Fairy Tale Lies collab. Bob’s working on something new he’s really happy with, plus he’s got Who Dares keeping him on the road. Never say never, but right now, we’re booked. Plus he has two puppies. It’s amazing he ever gets to the computer at all.

My word processor gives me the number of words, too; but it’s never the same as when you count by character the way you have to do when submitting to periodicals. For instance, word will count “I am.” as two words, but periodicals only count it as one — including the punctuation. I was just curious which way it went. I wonder if Scrivener counts them differently than Word? Huh.

My word version gives me the number of words I wrote in the document on the bottom left. But it’s also possible to look up the statistics and do the math.

Both Scrivener (the one I write in) and Word (the one I send the final to NYC in) count them for me. If I start out with 5000 words in the morning and when I stop the counter gives me 7000 words, then I’ve done 2000 words. If I’m lucky.

I know this is an incredibly amateurish question, but how do you count your words? I thought it was a pretty standard 250 words/page using 12 point courier on DS pages with 1″ margins. Is that only for short fiction (the only types of submissions I’ve ever done)? Like I said, this is probably a “duh” question for most of the people here, but I have no education in this area and am honestly curious. Anyone?

Love the snail too. I wish guilt worked to motivate me. I stupidly rebel against everything that might be motivating. Sounds psychological, doesn’t it?
