Monday Ticker: 19976

So the copy edit is done, and I’m back working on Lavender’s Blue today, 19976 words and counting:
I’m sure this is going to work. Guilt has always been a strong motivator for me. ARGH.

YAY! more good reads!
Btw, I get all the other references in the Liz Danger titles but where is Lavender’s Blue from? Thanks! Hope you aren’t stressing out or feeling guilty no more

Old folk song:
Lavender’s blue, dilly, dilly,
Lavender’s green.
When you are king, dilly, dilly,
I shall be queen.
Who told me so, dilly, dilly?
Who told me so?
‘Twas my own heart, dilly, dilly,
That told me so.

Thanks…Is there gonna be a reference to that in the book? I hate to be a pain but just as a suggestion, it almost doesn’t fit with the rest of the more modern, if “cliche” (not in a bad way, more like common lexicon) titles.

This is on some of the lullaby CDs I bought when my daughter was born (1999). A different version, though:
Lavender’s blue, dilly, dilly,
Lavender’s green.
When you are king, dilly, dilly,
I shall be queen.
Lavender’s green, dilly, dilly,
Lavender’s blue.
When I am big, dilly, dilly,
You shall be, too.

P.S. I just registered for the prequel and I think they’re marketing you incorrectly again. Underneath where you have options for which updates to receive via email – Crusie, Mayer, Romance, Etc.
Hmm, thought the two don’t end up together in this book.
On March 1, 2010 at 10:26 am Jenny said...
There are two romances in the book. Actually there are three, but two happen to the same character. I wouldn’t call it a romance novel, I’d call it romantic adventure, but they probably don’t have a tag for that.

Hmmm…I filled out the form and got a Francis Ray short story in my inbox instead. Dang it. I could have really used some Crusie this morning. I think I’ll try it again.

Okay, SMP screwed up and they advertised too early and our story isn’t there yet. ARGH. If you wait until next Monday, you can get the story here (link to my website, no signing up) or at BobMayer.org. Mollie’s on this so we’re hoping they’ll have fixed the link shortly and you can go to SMP and get it after filling out the form. No, this was not our idea. We’re really sorry.
On March 1, 2010 at 10:59 am Sierra said...
It’s totally not your fault.
I’ll wait until next Monday and think of it as a reward for finishing the midterms I’ve got this week. Otherwise I probably would have used it as yet another way of procrastinating and not studying today. It’s a win-win situation that way.

SMP sent an email with the correct story link and an excuse for the glitch.
On March 1, 2010 at 10:32 am me said...
I got the Francis Ray story too. Maybe we’ll get all sorts of other free stories besides Wild Ride, and not it’s not just a glitch that sent the wrong story?

Sorry, me, we posted at the same time. See above.

Thanks! Hope they can figure it out.

I’m sort of glad I wasn’t the only one. Ah, but now to practice patience. I know it’s good for me.
I can’t wait to read Wild Ride, the glimpses we’ve had so far are very enagaing.

It’s purple for Lavender. I’ll change it to something pink when I do Rest in Pink.

The ticker site is fun but WordPress doesn’t platy weel with others so I can’t get it to show up on my blog (wah!).
Which form on SMP is everyone talking about? I went to thier website and found a “bonus” link for Wild Ride which led to the first chapter… is that it?
On March 1, 2010 at 1:29 pm Sam said...
Ditto. What’s going on?

Please ignore my abominable spelling… I’m only 2 cups of coffee in. Oi.

You know, we’re going to be checking out the progress on that purple snail. Talk about pressure. . . .

Love the snail too. I wish guilt worked to motivate me. I stupidly rebel against everything that might be motivating. Sounds psychological, doesn’t it?
On March 1, 2010 at 4:17 pm Jenny said...
SMP says it’s all fixed and that anybody who got the Ray story will be getting “Wild Night”, too. And they’re in the process of sending us a file we can post here so you can click from here. And get the form. Or wait until next Monday and read it on the Jenny Crusie website, the Bob Mayer website, or the Crusie-Mayer website. I would write more, but
LyleMona is eating a roll of double-stick tape and there’s no way that can end well.On March 1, 2010 at 4:25 pm Sierra said...
Woohoo! I just got an email from SMP titled “SORRY FOR THE ERROR…” And it came with the right prequel. Yay! Now I’m going to put it to the side as a reward for getting all of my homework done.

I know this is an incredibly amateurish question, but how do you count your words? I thought it was a pretty standard 250 words/page using 12 point courier on DS pages with 1″ margins. Is that only for short fiction (the only types of submissions I’ve ever done)? Like I said, this is probably a “duh” question for most of the people here, but I have no education in this area and am honestly curious. Anyone?
On March 1, 2010 at 5:38 pm Jenny said...
Both Scrivener (the one I write in) and Word (the one I send the final to NYC in) count them for me. If I start out with 5000 words in the morning and when I stop the counter gives me 7000 words, then I’ve done 2000 words. If I’m lucky.
On March 1, 2010 at 5:42 pm colognegrrl said...
My word version gives me the number of words I wrote in the document on the bottom left. But it’s also possible to look up the statistics and do the math.
On March 2, 2010 at 12:06 am Dee said...
My word processor gives me the number of words, too; but it’s never the same as when you count by character the way you have to do when submitting to periodicals. For instance, word will count “I am.” as two words, but periodicals only count it as one — including the punctuation. I was just curious which way it went. I wonder if Scrivener counts them differently than Word? Huh.
On March 2, 2010 at 1:23 am Jenny said...
For what I do, the count doesn’t have to be that precise. Most of my books are contracted at 100,000 words, but I can go 10% either way, so they’re 90,000 to 110,000, by contract. The Liz books are contracted for 50,000 words because I couldn’t tell them how long they’d turn out to be, but Jen says I can go as high as I want. So the difference between Scrivener and Word is pretty much irrelevant for my purposes. I just need a ballpark number.
On March 2, 2010 at 4:20 am colognegrrl said...
When I submit essays or press releases to magazines, they give me a character limit. When I talk to my publisher, it’s about standard pages. The word count I do is just for myself.

Got my prequel! And hmmmmmm … I have got a pretty interesting idea in my head about what’s going on. Can’t wait for Wild Ride…

AudiobookStand (Brilliance Audio) just send me a notice of upcoming books. Wild Ride is on the list and there is a sample to listen to. I do like your collaborations with Bob. The last collaboration, the last book together, correct? Onto “nothing but good times ahead.”
On March 2, 2010 at 1:20 am Jenny said...
I’ve got four Liz books under contract, and then Jen wants to see the Alice and Nadine proposals, plus there’s the Fairy Tale Lies collab. Bob’s working on something new he’s really happy with, plus he’s got Who Dares keeping him on the road. Never say never, but right now, we’re booked. Plus he has two puppies. It’s amazing he ever gets to the computer at all.

So is “Slow Men” dead? And You Again? Do you think you’ll ever write those?
On March 2, 2010 at 9:24 am Jenny said...
I think Slow Men is dead. I’m doing what I wanted to do structurally in that book with the Liz books.
You Again is hibernating. I would not be surprised to see it pop up again, but I also would not be surprised if it didn’t. Bet Me sat for fifteen years.

I know the Alice book will have supernatural elements. Does Nadine’s?

What made you keep Bet Me for 15 years? The reason I ask is I’ve have four or five book ideas that didn’t get passed a few scenes before I lost interest and gave up. I have a low tenacity threshold.
