The Liz Collages
Feb262010
So I’m starting Liz Danger, and I’m so excited. First person, short narratives, linked together, I love it. So of course I started the collages.
Since there are four Liz books in the series, I wanted to make the four collages work as a series, too. I started with shadow boxes but they were way too small, so I went to square pieces of foam core, no shelf for 3D this time. I was planning on hanging them two up and two down to make a big square, but I may leave them as they are now, leading into one another horizontally, the way the books lead into one another. Except the books access each other, too, so the four square might be better, especially since the last one leads back to the first. So I’ll have to cogitate.
Making the base collage was fun because I was working with the four title colors from Lavender’s Blue, Rest in Pink, Peaches and Screams, and Yellow Brick Roadkill. Krissie and Lani and I hit the craft stores and a scrapbook store, and I have to tell you, finding papers that looked right for the four books really helped me conceptualize them. They were all so different, but they all nailed the feel of the book I wanted. Then we came home and I put the backgrounds together. The orange wasn’t orange enough and the yellow wasn’t yellow enough so I had to do some tweaking, but in the end, I got four backgrounds that felt like the books to me. There’s still too much green in the Yellow Brick Roadkill collage, but I can fix that later. (Click the thumbnails to see bigger pictures.)
The collage for Lavender’s Blue is almost finished, so it’s harder to see that background, but it’s all lavenders and purples with some silver glitter details that left me twinkling for days. (Lani laughed and laughed and said, “You have glitter all over you, you sparkle.” I said, “I’m a vampire, so let’s watch that tone, shall we?” Well, you had to be there.)
Rest in Pink takes place in June at a little girl’s beauty contest, so it’s mostly interior, too, with lots of sparkles and crowns.
Peaches and Screams takes place at the county fair, so it had to feel like August, mostly outside, with that last-days-before-school heat and dust.
Yellow Brick Roadkill is about a high school drama production of The Wiz, and it takes place in November, mostly inside, so there’s a lot of theater imagery along with the Wizard of Oz stuff. (For those of you who knew me when, the choice of The Wiz for the play came from the title; the fact that we once did sets and costumes for a real high school production of The Wiz is just gravy. And how are you guys doing these days? You’re all in your thirties now, which boggles my mind because that’s how old I was when I was yelling at you to get out of the damn rafters before you killed yourselves. Or hyperventilating because you’d just told me the light booth had caught fire but it was okay because you’d put it out. Or trying to figure out how to keep those trees moving, remember that? Good times.)
Where was I?
Oh, right, the collages. The big deal for me was seeing how they worked together as a composite, the colors overlapping on each other, yet also worked alone as complete collages, the way the individual books have to stand alone. Once I started bleeding images and colors among the collages, the feel of them changed and became more complex. Doing all the backgrounds helped me conceptualize the series, while doing each collage helps me conceptualize the individual books. The whole process was really valuable. Also fun. Did I mention fun?
And now I’m writing Lavender and I know exactly where I’m going because it’s on the collage. Life is so good. And I love Liz.

I was wondering what those collages were in the background of your dog pictures!
I keep thinking the Lavender book is called “Laid in Lavender” hee!

LOL @ the sparkling vampire reference
I’m totally loving the idea of a series. The thought of having that much time with some of your characters is very exciting!

These are beyond great. Yellow Brick Roadkill…there was something I couldn’t pin down and then it hit me. Crazy For You – Into The Woods and one of the all-time greatest sex scenes ever written. Up against a wall – Holy Hell, my heart still speeds up when I replay it in my head. I get that same rush from that scene in The Big Easy with Ellen Barkin and Dennis Quaid on the bed, and yes, I have re-wound it once or fifty times. Whoa, is it warm in here? I think it’s getting warmer. Here’s hoping Liz gets some excellent loving in all four books. I could use some new material and R. would be so happy – He smiles and says, “What have you been reading?”. Smart man.

Oops – I’m on his laptop in a waiting room and overcome with imagery. The above was written by me, Marly, of course. Now I can never mention his using my posts again. Nuts.

I didn’t think that sounded like R.

LMAO. It’s like the line in Lucy’s excerpt today where Zel says that she reads a lot. Adding this to my imaginary book “How to live like a romance novel heroine” or something like that. Along with “Cherish female friendships” and “Don’t dress like you hate your body” will be “Assist with theater productions to have creative relations”

Aha! Let me say that again. AHA!!!! Okay, so it was a mistake and not a co-op, it still counts. I don’t know from collages and I haven’t read or listened to all the books, but I’ll admit there are sometimes I think I should encourage every man I know to buy books for his wife or girlfriend. And then I think, why should I tell them? No denying it can be big time powerful. So, Ms. Crusie, write, write. write. Sleep is overrated. I haven’t seen Ms. Lucy’s blog – I thought it was strictly female and more serious. Or deep. I’ll have to check. Oh, great dogs. Lyle looks like a character. And the editor – my mom used to try to make me answer the phone saying, To whom would you like to speak? That was horrible and it never took. But it reminds me of the creaky old butler in the movies who’d say, “Walk This Way”, and you could practically see the stick.

It looks like you had a blast making those — I’m planning on doing one for my current WIP. I geek out over Girl Scout stuff like that, so now I just have to channel it into the books. I’m hoping the visuals work for me like they do for you — even if just a teeny tiny bit would make me massively excited.

Those bears in the forest on the first collage are cracking me up. Such sweet looking little fuzzballs surrounded by scary Halloween trees- hilarious. And that little dog with the tiara in Rest in Pink is killing me. Am dying from cuteness now.

There are bears in Lavender and trees in all of the books. Come to think of it, there are bears in all of the books; Liz brings a new one to her mom every time she comes home.

Do I spy Shelley Winters in the Lavendar collage? Please tell me she’s Liz’s mom with the bear collection.

She’s Liz’s aunt, Molly’s mom.

After they’re done-ish can you put them in a square facing out, as if you’re making a box or a really colorful lampshade? That would help them flow but further isolate each story. I’m glad you’re having fun with this. Can’t wait to hear/see more. It’s been a bonanza coupla fan days around here with all the dog and collage pictures and free books.

What fun. These look fabulous. You’ve even got Betty White in there in Lavander’s Blue. I adore her. She was so funny in The Proposal, without her that movie would have died a dreadful death.

(-: I am a very good speller, but the L-word gets me every time. Either I’m wrong (98 percent of the time), or I’m right and I think I’m wrong.
I love the idea of serial collages . . . can’t wait to see how these grow!

I spy Ryan Reynolds – love him!
I’m curious why you switched from 2010 to 1992 for the Liz books?
And… thank you, thank you, thank you, for sharing the collages.
On February 26, 2010 at 10:44 pm Jenny said...
I didn’t. 1992 is for Maybe This Time. Liz is 2010-ish.

What Marly said about the theater scene in CFY. Is Veronica in Peaches and Screams? I thought that looked like her. How do you get all your photos to be coordinated by size? Do you scan and reprint them? I love the Lavender’s Blue look.
On February 26, 2010 at 10:45 pm Jenny said...
Veronica’s in all the books; she becomes Liz’s dog.
I pull a lot of the photos off the net and then put them into a Word Doc; easy to size them that way.

Can I just tell you how incredibly excited I am to see what you do with the county fair? I spent ten years in 4-H in Ohio. Yeah, I was that kid. And now I get guilted into going back to judge 4-H projects at the county and state fairs, so I know well the potential for drama and riotous humor. It is great. If Jennifer Crusie is taking her protagonist to a county fair, we are in for a very good time.

I grew up in the county seat of Auglaize county and my dad was the fair electrician. I went every year for the whole week until I left for college, so I have fond memories. But it was a very small fair, and the one in Liz’s book will be, too. Lani and the girls and I will be going to the Clermont County fair this August to check it out, especially the food stuff since Peaches and Screams is mostly about food.

I find it totally fascinationg that collages help you and other writers so much to visualize the story-to-be-written-down-yet. I’m quite visual, too, but obviously no writer (no girls nor guys in the basement and not even good bedtime-stories to tell my kids). But I’ve recently started to do collages as family-pics and it’s FUN, FUN, FUN.
This guy in the first two Liz’ collages – it’s Ryan Reynolds, isn’t it? Is he by chance the placeholder for this very cute cop we were able to meet in this very first piece you uploaded about the Liz’ books?

Vince is a mash-up of Ryan Reynolds, Vince Vaughn, and Jeff Bridges. Reynolds doesn’t have the bulk I need for Vince but that picture worked. Expect to see the others show up in future collages. They’re all Vince.

I feel very collage inferior now. But even though mine is inferior – it still is helping me write my book. I am so grateful for the process. Thanks again for that.
Can’t wait for the Liz books. They sound (and look) like so much fun.

I was thinking last night that there’s going to be a lot of book talk this year, what with Lani working on her waffle waitress book and the fairy tale lies collaboration. Then Jenny has Wild Ride, Maybe This Time, the collaboration and the four Liz books. I knew 2010 was going to be a good year.
And, WOW, again, I continue to be amazed at your diligence and hard work.

It is a lot of work, but it’s really really satisfying once you’ve wrestled the story to the ground and fixed all the holes and bumps. It’s harder with the big books I usually write, so I’m hoping that writing four short Liz books in first person is finally going to be just fun. Ha.

Sounds like you’re becoming more of a plotter with each book you write.

These are so cool! I’m kind of amazed every time that I see one of your collages at how much detail is in each one-how many tiny pieces eventually construct the whole. When I collage, it’s pretty much a piece of white cardboard and a bunch of magazine clippings-although I’m loving the concept of scrap-book page collages-I could def do that. Do you know all of the pieces/ main ideas before you start gluing or do you just stumble upon elements that add another layer to your story as you go?

I find them as I go. The book evolves and so does the collage.

I love the four square idea, becuase they kind of remind me quilt squares. They don’t have to be identical, each square can stand alone, but put them together and you have some greater than the sum of the parts. That seems to work for the Liz stories because you said that they also have the overriding story arc as well as individual story arcs.

This has probably been said already but – anybody remember Nick Danger, Third Eye – by Firesign Theatre, a 70′s bizzare comedy group, 4 guys who released record albums, several of which were presented as old time radio plays:
“Los Angeles… He walks again by night! Out of the fog, into the smog! Relentlessly, ruthlessly (I wonder where Ruth is), doggedly (arf arf) towards his weekly meeting with … the Unknown! At 4th and Drucker he turns left… at Drucker and 4th he turns right… he crosses MacArthur Park and walks into a great sandstone building! (ouch, my nose!). He climbs the 13 steps to his office… he walks in… he’s ready for action… (phone ringing in background) he’s ready for adventure…. he’s ready for anything… he’s… (answers phone) Nick Danger, 3rd Eye. “

He’s Liz’s grandpa. Dead now, of course.
At least her dad is named Nick Danger, Jr. That’s about where I’m leaving it; people can draw their own conclusions.
