Huh
Feb222010
I should have listened to you. “It’ll crash the site,” you said. “You’re gonna have problems,” you said. “Nah,” I said. Then Mollie e-mailed me with a heading that said “Yep-site crashed” and I thought, “Well, hell. Who knew?” Then I remembered: you all did.
But we’ve got it fixed now! We hope. It wasn’t supposed to be a nightmare. I apologize to everybody. ARGH.
In other news, we (Lani and I) started The Diet today in order to become Healthy People. So there may be some crankiness for the next two weeks since that’s how long it’s going to be before I can have chocolate pudding. Or bread. I think I get to have french fries again in 2012. Also, did you know the directions on the sugar-free Jello package tell you to stir the stuff for two minutes? Who does that? It’s Jello, not bechamel sauce. Yes, that’s cranky. Sorry. I’m in chocolate withdrawal.
And really sorry about the site crashing and the frustration and the general miasma of malfunction. I’m sure tomorrow will be better.
Oh, and CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS! Have some chocolate. Please.

I can’t tell you how excited I am! Thank you so much for writing such great stuff that we’re all so desperate to read.
I’m also curious about that part on the form where I clicked “I agree” without reading anything. I mean, if I sold my soul to the devil or something, I’m OK with that, but I was just wondering.

If I remember right it said we had to read it and send our response in by March 31st…. and possibly some other stuff

Oh, good, I’m glad somebody paid attention! The only way I wouldn’t be able to read it by March 31st would be if I didn’t get it until April 1st, so no worries there.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing

For a possible chocolate fix, look in to Emerald brand cocoa roast almonds. 1g of sugar per serving, and very low carb. Also, very tasty. I use them as a snack stuck in my bookbag for when I want a little bit of chocolate taste but don’t want all that sugar/fat.
This site has the nutritional info for them up – http://www.thedailyplate.com/nutrition-calories/food/emerald/cocoa-roasted-almonds

I’m in week 8 of The Diet and have definitely had enough, so you have my sympathy for the crankiness.
We’re out with friends tonight and I’ve got a nasty feeling dinner is going to be takeaway pizza. So I went to the pizza website and looked at their nutritional data to see how many slivers of pizza I could nibble on while pretending I’m not hungry, honest. The good news is the data was there. The bad news is they said “per serving” and didn’t say how many servings there are per pizza. Crankiness ensued. They sell 8-slice “double” pizzas, but I’ll bet their nutritional info reckons one serving is one slice, not four. Grrrr.

No problem, Jenny. You said you were giving away books. You didn’t say we weren’t going to have to work for them!
On the plus side, well a plus from my perspective, there are now 10 fewer people eligible to compete tomorrow!

I can’t wait to try tomorrow.
Good luck with The Diet.

Oh I was SO ready to be number one this morning but Star had other plans. She decided to jump on the bed for a bit before crashing and knocking out her two front teeth. So I was at the dentist instead of parked in front of the computer watching your site fail. Ah well. Barring bodily injuries, tomorrow is another chance to be the Winnah.

Oh NO! That’s awful and you have my sympathies, both of you!

Good luck with The Diet.
And we’ll figure out some way to help you find a home for all those books, no matter how hard it gets. Though, it will be nice to have it work better tomorrow.

So excited! Definitely got extremely lucky! And I did in fact celebrate with some chocolate, but to make you feel better it was vegan chocolate which most people probably wouldn’t like
good luck everyone for the rest of the week!

I’m trying the “Fresh Diet” where they bring your food for the day to your house and it’s all measured out to meet your caloric needs. Apparently for my desired weight (and given how short I am), my caloric needs are only 1400 a day. Gah. I couldn’t hack it today and gave in to two Fiber One bars (I figured since I didn’t eat the last few bites of the swordfish and very little of the raspberry stuff on top of that, it sort of balances out), but I’m going to try to be better tomorrow and only snack on an apple if I start wanting to gnaw my own fist. I should also buy some sugarless gum for those fist-gnawing moments.

Dear Booksellers,
Please see Ms. Crusie’s blog. Stock the book. We’ll buy it. ‘Nuf said.
Sincerely,
Ms. Crusie’s readers.
P.S. Who gives up chocolate?! It grows on a plant! Doesn’t that make it a vegetable?

Plus, chocolate has milk in it, so a healthy helping of calcium. Plus, it minimises the risk of me turning into She-Hulk today!

LOL-exactly what I thought. “Um, Barnes and Noble? Amazon? A site crashed by Crusie fans=a safe bet. Her reprint hit the best-seller list. Helloooo?!”

I find it completely charming (and admirable) that you seem unable to acknowledge your impact on the world. Have that fixed for tomorrow, do you? Uh huh. Yep, I’m sure those 10 winners who no longer have a reason to hit the site will make All The Difference. Um, you did tell them not to visit the site tomorrow, didn’t you?
I’ll be slaving away at work every day at noon this week, but I wish all the rest of the commenters the best of luck! Maybe one day there could be a window of opportunity at midnight instead of noon? No? Okay. [sigh] [damnit]
Please do tell those lovely booksellers I’ll be buying at least one copy, no matter what anyone says about it ahead of time.

Well, duh, yeah, chocolate is a vegetable. Never say otherwise. ; )
And I have a serious question, Jenny. What does it feel like to have so many fans that their enthusiasm for your work crashes your site? I also love to ask people with sudden Wealth how it feels to be able to donate significantly to a charity they believe in. There’s something to be said for overwhelming shows of positive regard or generosity that just make me smile.
On to tomorrow!

Thank you for the contest and allowing all ten winners today. I pledge to not log on any time between 12 and 1:30 EST.
And best wishes to you and Lani on the diet. I gave up alchohol for Lent. I’m waiting for the pounds to melt off. (OK, not truely in the right spirit, that, but at least I’m honest.)

Life is too short to have to spend time being cranky. Besides, a small amount of dark chocolate is supposed to have some healthy stuff in it that’s good for heart health, or brain health, or something like that. Apparently not memory health. Today’s piece was delicious though. Dove.

You and Lani have all my sympathy. All of it. I have spent the last 5 weeks on a diet to make me healthy (nothing that is sweet in any way including fruit; nothing pre-prepared or refined – not even white rice; absolutely nothing with chemicals in it; a LOT of vegetables, eggs and meat). I have one more week to go and, oddly, the things I will reach for first will be fruit and corn on the cob.
I am healthier than I was but then I started way behind. Funny thing is, I ate heaps of food (didn’t stint on quantities at all) and ended up losing weight even though that wasn’t the goal. I have a waist!
Hope it goes well for you both.

Sitting in a hotel room fried from a day in background investigator class and read this post. I laughed. Out loud.
Also, did you know the directions on the sugar-free Jello package tell you to stir the stuff for two minutes? Who does that? It’s Jello, not bechamel sauce.
Still laughing. Loved it! Thanks. I needed that. Really.
On February 23, 2010 at 2:19 am Louis said...
Well, if you stir the Jello, there is a smidgen of exercise involved.
On February 23, 2010 at 4:02 am inkgrrl said...
Easier to just buy the jello pre-made. Unless this is a ritualistic sort of thing. In which case, never mind.
On February 23, 2010 at 7:17 am Carla said...
Gotta agree here. Jello makes sugar-free pudding and, well, sugar-free Jello; just pull the lid and it’s ready to serve. (Whipped cream is on The Diet in moderation.) Plus if you wash the Jello cups afterward, they make great serving cups for peanuts, almonds, or in the case of the kids in the house who aren’t on The Diet, M&M’s. I also just joined a gym and I’m on Week 7 of The Diet too, and DH got me Sketchers Shape-Ups for my birthday. There is hope because my jeans fit much better now. It’s easier to Diet when I’m working out too. I’d rather die than have a Snickers bar ruin all my hard work. Guilt is a great motivator. Plus 20 minutes on the treadmill gives me time to mull over the WIP…until the thing speeds up on its own and I’m running for dear life…

BWAAAH! (Enraged version of “argh”).
I am up at FOUR A.M. thanks to my husband’s alarm and the contest on here does not start till noon. So there is in fact zero karmic boost for getting up when he does like a lovely supportive wife instead of kicking the bejeezus out of him when the clock’s mechanical beep gave me an apoplexy. Good to know.

Also, regarding the chemically foamy sugar-free Jell-o, allow me to quote Say Anything…

I’m still in shock. Thank you so much, Jenny & SMP!
Regarding The Diet – I was diagnosed with diabetes last September, so now have to watch my diet. After ranting about the unfairness, I haven’t had TOO much trouble watching what I eat. And I have lost about 20 lbs. My jeans are SO loose! I need new ones!
But in the evening, watching TV, is the hardest. I tell myself to wait 30 minutes (or so), and most of the time the craving eases. Luckily, I’m not a big sweet eater, but sometimes, chocolate is the ONLY thing that works!

I understand crankiness. I give up caffeine for lent every year. I am just about over the withdrawal by the time Easter rolls around!

You should try the Jello pudding cups that are already made at the grocery. Yes, it seems lazy, and yes it costs more. However, they are YUMMY and only 60 calories. Plus, no stirring required
It’s helped my dieting sweet tooth immensly. I do not recommend giving up bread or pasta – you will get VERY cranky! lol

You know who else has fans who crash servers? Joss Whedon. Apparently advance copies of Jenny Crusie = episodes of Dr. Horrible. I’m pretty sure this makes you a goddess of media.

You are allowed to have dark chocolate. It is good for your heart, has a low glycemic index (so it’s even ok in moderation for diabetics), helps with high blood pressure, and might possibly ward off pre-mature aging and cancer. What more coudl a girl want?! Oh, and it’s chocolate and yummy!

Oh, and I HATE anything with artificial sweeteners. I’m really big on “why eat healthy then put chemicals in your body?” Have you guys tried other natural sweeteners, like agave nectar, stevia (the brand WITHOUT the added chemicals, just plain stevia), cane syrup, rice syrup, etc, etc? Most of them are really good! Chocolate in general is not bad for you (the darker the better), it’s all the stuff they add (fattening cream, whole milk, sugar, etc) that makes it fattening. I have an awesome HEALTHY brownie recipe if anyone wants it. I swear it tastes good. I’m a foodie, I don’t sacrifice flavor.
