Thirty-Five People Will Be Winners! Revised!
Feb202010
REVISED ANNOUNCEMENT: St. Martin’s Press has a scathingly brilliant idea. Before we try to sell the book to readers, we have to sell it to booksellers because if we don’t get the booksellers to buy it, they can’t sell it to you. So in order to convince booksellers that Maybe This Time, a book about ghosts that pays homage to a nineteenth century Henry James novella, will be a laff riot or at least popular with people-who-read-Crusie, they’d like some reader quotes. That’s right, they want some people to read Maybe This Time and then IF THEY LIKE IT, say nice things that St. Martin’s Press can then send to booksellers and say, “See, Crusie’s readers liked it. Really. Swear to God.”
So they have thirty-five ARCsbound manuscripts* of Maybe This Time to send out to readers. Two things to remember:
1. This is the pre-copy-edit version, so it’s going to change. Don’t freak over typos and glitches, we’re on it. Well, I’m on it, the copy edit arrived this week.
2. You do not have to like it. If you read it and don’t like it, say so. I doubt they’ll use your quote–”Trite and awkward, not Crusie’s best. Also, what’s with the ghosts?”–but we absolutely are not asking you to read it and give good quote regardless of your opinion.
So here’s how it’s gonna work:
We’re giving away ARCs (advanced reading copies) bound manuscripts** with plain paper covers to the first seven people in the US and Canada*** who register fill the out the freaking form on this blog every day this week. Mollie will put up a This form will magically appear at noon Eastern Time Feb. 22 through the 26th, shortly after which the first seven eligible entries will be determined.**** She SMP will be mailing out the ARCs, bound manuscripts so you’ll be dealing with . You cannot register twice, although you can register again the next day if you haven’t won the day before. The winners will be listed on the updated blog entry with their first name and city as soon as Mollie gets to it, but she’s very efficient so I doubt the wait will be long. She will also be posting the contest info on Twitter, Facebook, the CherryForums, JennyCrusieFans on Yahoo, and our mailing list, I’m assuming because she doesn’t think thirty-five of you will be interested in reading it and reporting back by her them which, believe me, is a good thingthe beginning of March the end of March. So no pressure, Argh People. Feel free to ignore this. If we don’t get thirty-five people who want the ARCs, I’ll just go out to the road and start flagging down cars.
And we thank you for your support.
*Not an ARC. ARCs aren’t out for months yet.
** Really, not ARCs.
*** SMP’s request, not our decision
**** Mollie requested passive voice here. I think it’s plausible deniability personally.
Or as Mollie prefers:
“Every weekday this week (Feb. 22 through the 26th), we’re giving away seven early bound manuscripts with plain paper covers of my upcoming solo novel “Maybe This Time” to US and Canadian residents. An entry form will magically appear each day at noon EST and the first seven eligible entries received will win!”

Speaking of writing, I just have to share. My daughter just got accepted into the Iowa Writer’s Workshop at the Universtiy of Iowa for an MFA in poetry! She is so stoked and we are so excited for her and proud. She graduated from college 4 years ago and has been working as an editor; and according to her, she is sooooo ready to go back to school.
Thanks for letting a Mom crow!

*brave, gracious loser expression* I know that all of you who can log on in the middle of a work day to register and win an ARC will really enjoy the book. The rest of us look forward to reading your comments since we’ll have to wait with the rest of the world for the book to come out. (No, I’m not holding back tears. That sniffling’s from a cold. Right. Sure. A cold.)

It’s a really REALLY good thing that you’re doing this electronically. It prevents the deaths that would have happened as those in front got trampled under the stampede of fans and the fights after someone actually gets one in her/his hands.

I think it’s your name and address. And if the address isn’t completely there, they’ll toss the entry, so fill in all the blanks.
On February 21, 2010 at 2:02 pm JulieB said...
OK, So we only have to try to be one of the seven on ONE of the days, right?
On February 21, 2010 at 3:26 pm Jenny said...
The first seven eligible entries each day get bound copies. So if you don’t win one day, you can enter again the next. I think the form shuts down after the first ten entries, and the reason it takes ten is in case somebody didn’t fill out a complete address.

I’d give one to the person who made the Cheese Wiz on a Twinkie comment. That’s so grossly funny and conjurs up such an image that the writer deserves a book.

Well, to be sure I have set my alram but I am not sure how far different EST is from PST–I thought it was four hours? But y’all are saying three hours… Hmmm. Mountain time is one hour, Central is two (Chicago)–is there another one in between Central and Eastern? Time to go check a time zone map–this is making me crazy!! AND making me sound SOOOO stupid! LOL!
As for giving the early manuscripts to those of us with sad excuses I think I should win–I have been off work for two months now and have read all my Crusie’s at least once and several of my Nora Roberts, as well as parts of the phone book (there is some interesting info in a phone book–you should try it some time!). And now I have had to start a mostly liquid diet to prepare for my gastric bypass surgery (tentatively scheduled for the 4th of March) and since I am not working I just sit here and OBSESS over not getting to eat real food!! I am grumpy and bitchy and bored and a shiny new book would SO take my mind off of my own misery (and make my family ETERNALLY grateful towhomever provided it for me!!)!! So HA!! I win!! lol!!

The first day will be a scramble, heavily biased toward quick-fingered, hot-key adept, intuitive form navigators using a MacBook Pro on a T-3 line. After that, the diabolically crafty can better their odds, but Apple users should retain an edge over the non-Apples of similar circumstances (internet connection and provider, processor speed, computer skill, etc.).
I’m a little (okay, incredibly) intrigued by how this plays out. Can we possibly get the pertinent info on the winners? If my prediction holds true, wouldn’t it make a great Apple commercial? Well, it’d make a great commercial either way, but I have this image in my head of Jenny telling Mac how she had this contest for her new book, Maybe This Time, as PC walks up and hears how out of several gazillion entrants, most of the successful ones were using Apples. When PC looks sad, Jenny gives him a copy of the book, making him happy again.
I need happy thoughts like this because I have really bad contest karma. Either I’ll hit delete instead of enter, or the power will go out, or something. But, I will not complain. Well, not in public. Really. Instead, I’ll remind myself that Wild Ride is almost out, and then we’ll have Maybe This Time and the Liz books. A bumper crop of Crusie, and it’s almost harvest time.

I entered the form, too, about 50 minutes after I expected it to come up. I was just checking for updates, and there it was! I don’t know if it counts anymore, with all the problems, though. Plus, I wouldn’t be surprised if I typed in my email wrong or something- I was totally freaked when it showed up.

Me too! I was totally blindsided and my hands shook. I figured it might not be valid (or it might be too late anyway) but I couldn’t NOT try.

Always, it’s the US/Canada readers. Something wrong with us Aussies? We do spread the word, you know…

I never even saw the form, curses, foiled again! I heard her read part of
this at one of the Beach Bound Retreats she did with LRWA and I have so wanted
to read more of it. Even a truck draft, anything. Better luck tomorrow.
