News from Habitat

Molly Bell posted this as a comment back on the “Habitat for Haiti” post, but I didn’t want you to miss it:
Hi Jenny, I thought you’d like an update about what Habitat for Humanity is doing in Haiti. Yesterday we announced a plan to provide 50,000 housing solutions in Haiti! There’s no misplaced decimal there, we really mean 50,000 families with a new or repaired home, that is safe and is constructed to withstand future disasters. It’s an ambitious goal, but we think we can do it, with the support of people like you and your fans. You can learn more about our approach at : http://www.habitat.org/ Thanks for getting the word out – it is appreciated! Molly
So your dollars are doing good. It’s hard to imagine fifty thousand families getting homes, but then you remember that this is what Habitat does. Amazing organization, made possible because you give. Thank you all so much.

Love Habitat. My rowdy, homeschooled teenage boy and I are giving a few days of our time to help on the next build in our area. I’d like to say we’re excited about the prospect, but really it’s just me. But I bet he’s excited about the NEXT one.

Wow, that’s fabulous news! I’ll admit I didn’t get around to contributing the first time you posted this (gave to Red Cross instead) but I’m clicking the link right now to make my donation. Thank you for supporting such a worthy cause!

Habitat is an amazing organization. You know where your money goes and you can see results. OT-I saw on the internet that FEMA has 100,000 trailers they built for Katrina, there was a picture. These are the trailers that are contaminated with formaldehyde. Haiti (rightly so) has declined to accept them. What a tragic waste.

That’s really great! The idea of 50,000 houses — especially in a country that didn’t have such great infrastructure to begin with — is mind-boggling. But I hope they meet and exceed that goal — it’ll be a great boost to Haiti.
The earthquake was a terrible thing, but wouldn’t it be something wonderful if Haiti rose like a phoenix from these ashes, and turned into a lovely vacation spot? Hope springs eternal . . . .

Beki: I’ve done it – it’s a lot of fun. You and DS will enjoy it for sure. (If they are putting in door frames, ask to help in that. Apparently it is the third most important skill to know when building a house.*)
This is an ambitious goal – I hope they make it.
*I was told this by two different people at two different house sites. I’m not planning to ever really use this knowledge, but it never hurts.)

God, I would LOVE to know how to build a door frame. Thanks for the heads up. And the ReStore places are amazing for home improvement, too. We’ve purchased replacement windows, interior doors, paints, kitchen hardware, and any number of other items at our local ReStore.
