Reissue Covers: TML and CFY
Jan272010
Tell Me Lies and Crazy for You are coming out in trade paperback in May and July, Welcome to Temptation to follow in September. I think they look like candy, and the other four to follow are just as simple and bright. Really thrilled with this, so hats off to Mollie and the SMP art department who designed these:

(The CFY mock-up below the jump is still waiting for the real art which is why there’s a watermark on it, but it’ll look just like that.)

Cuteness!

They’re awfully cutesy. Have we had a discussion before on Crazy for You? It gets quite dark, so a cutesy cover is a bit misleading. Oh, I think I remember where I saw a conversation on it: Goodreads. People were expecting this flip little romance and got a book that gets quite scary. They were inclined to rate it down because their expectations weren’t met. Hm.

It’s a problem with a lot of my books because of my short attention span. I tend to keep wandering off to try something new and people don’t get what they expect because publishers like to create a look for an author across books. I think SMP does a fabulous job on my covers, so I’m happy. And that puppy in the house definitely looks scared, so that might be a clue. But yes, Crazy For You has some dark stuff in it. Nothing beyond the pale, though. No kids or dogs are harmed, and the heroine beats the crap out of the guy who tries to attack her at the end. As dark reads go, I’m not even sure it qualifies as dimly lit. So if it has a dark cover and somebody who likes Stephen King buys it . . . same problem.

While I think Crazy for You dips into darkness, it really isn’t a dark book by any means. It is more about finding happiness and your true self. Which is pretty bubblegum stuff. Or maybe I am just to easily distracted by fancy lingerie and up-against-the-wall sex.
I like the covers. They make me want to buy the books all over again just to get the happy pictures instead of my battered used copies.

It might be something about _me_ that changes, as the reader. I’ve read the book something like 5 times, and each time it seems a little darker. I can’t tell that the puppy looks scared because all I can see on it is bit o’fluffy dog head, but I’m glad to hear his does.

I loved CFY — I didn’t think it was dark at all…or at least, there were lots of warnings, so when Quinn has to wale on whatshisname (I’m sorry, Jenny, it was like a decade ago that I read it), I cheered, but I wasn’t surprised. (I mean that in a good way.) I love the covers and will probably buy them again too.

Hi I’m going off topic here. I’m blaming everything I do this week on Flu Brain so that’s why I’m off topic.
I spent the last three days lying in bed listening to Welcome to Temptation. If you’re going to have the mother of all flu then you should at least have something decent to listen to. Right? My family was a tad unhappy that I couldn’t hear them talking to me, but my point was they shouldn’t have been talking to me anyway. They should have been staying very, very far from me. Except to occasionally bring me ginger ale and crackers. Which I would have been afraid to eat anyway.
I digress. I loved WTT – who wouldn’t. But the best part was that when I was done I felt like I had my voice back. Not my yelling-at-the-kids-and-spouse voice. My writer’s voice, and my instinct. I’ve kinda felt off almost this entire novel. Like the there wasn’t there. You know what I mean? I guess I laughed enough during WTT that some synapse in my brain fired up and when I sat down to revise yesterday afternoon the words came flowing. The humor, the snap, the feel – it was all back.
Hallelujah.
So Thanks yet again.
Oh and I do like the new covers, but don’t change Faking It. I love that cover.

With the books being re-issued are they finally going to have unabridged copies of the audiobook? Please!!!
On January 27, 2010 at 1:31 pm marly said...
Yes, I cast another vote for the UNABRIDGED audio editions. When I finally hear they’re available at the bookstores, I’ll be off like a prom dress. I swear!

You know, the same thing happens to me. I get so stuck in my own head, and then I read somebody else’s stuff and think, “I want to write.
Thank you!

Whoops, that was supposed to go after Kate’s comment.
I thought the Brilliance editions were unabridged.
On January 27, 2010 at 2:14 pm marly said...
I just checked with Brilliance for the “for sale” items. TML and CFY are not listed on your unabridged titles list. You can purchase and rent the abridged (6 hr) versions. It’s the same everywhere I’ve looked. Since I’m already familiar with the books, the abridged versions make me nuts. What are they leaving out? Then I have to go check the printed book. I finally gave up and am just waiting for the complete books in audio. I’m with Carol Ann below – I’d never get on the treadmill with audio books.
On January 27, 2010 at 2:46 pm marly said...
Drat. I definitely need the “preview” button. I meant to say I’d never use the treadmill WITHOUT audio books.

I had to comment about “what they’re leaving out” in marly’s post. A number of years ago my husband went along with me on a business trip – we listened to “Presumed Innocent” – an abridged 4 hour version in the car. When we got home he raced to the video store (it was a looong time ago) and rented the movie. Within 30 minutes of finishing the audiobook we watched the movie. When it was over he said “the movie was good but they left out so much that was in the book” – I wonder how it compared to the real turn-those-pages book.

Re-issues are great – my copies are getting worn. But what I’d love is for ALL of Ms Crusie’s titles to be available for the Kindle.

Love the new covers. Very eye catching. I have not read Crazy For You. Looking forward to a ‘new’ book and the NEW books.
Karin – I have WTT, FI,FW, plus AatH, DLD and, my favourite BM all on audiobooks, all unabridged. All full service, every word, every delicious moment. Brilliance Audio is the producer/seller, perhaps, that helps you. Brialliance Audio has a web site and will mail directly to you. Don’t you just hate it when you have read the book and you are waiting for a scene only to be disappointed as it is not there!?! I like a BOOK book and a huge book budget. I’d never get on the treadmill if I didn’t have an audio book, a bit hard to read a book and run at the same time. Here I am trying to justify the audio book, I have both the book and the audio book. Nothing like a good book at the end of the day or on the beach.
I digress, the covers are like candy, now I want a lollipop.

They’re good covers. Although ‘Crazy for You’ is undoubtedly a dark book in many respects, I really do not see that cover as misleading; it is infinitely more appropriate than the cover of my paperback edition of that title, which, quite mystifyingly, depicts chunks from a chocolate bar with the title impressed on them.
I like the way the new covers pick up on a relevant artefact from the story, and then applies a unified colour. I shall be interested to see the others.

I’m not sure what happened with that cover, Ag. It was just odd. I thought maybe it was an English audience thing, that you all like purple and dark chocolate.

It’s the combination of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk/Galaxy and a really good book. Perfection.

It’s the combination of a really good book and really good chocolate, for me it has to be Cadbury’s Dairy Milk or Galaxy, but CDM has a purple wrapper so it makes sense to me. But I’m a choco-Crusie-aholic.

Apologies for the duplication, but I’m on my lunch at work and our ‘net gets nuts at times. Most annoying.

Sorry for the grammatical stumble. Why doesn’t the ‘preview’ function work any more on this site? There’s still a button that says ‘preview’, but nothing happens when one clicks it.

I’ll ask Mollie.

Ah, and it’s great that there’re going reissues of your books – if all of them get such great covers that’s a good reason to get a second set of all of them.

Those are great covers. And these days, great covers are hard to find. Kudos to St. Martins.
Re: CFY – The dog and her new place play a big role and the windows of that cute little pink confection are black so I say it reflects the story well. Just my 2 cents.

The covers are great. Lately I reread TML. Now I am rereading parts of it over again. I’m glad for the opportunity to tell you Jenny, I love the relationship between C.L. & Maddie’s daugher, Emily in that book. I have reread that dialogue 20 times lately cause I really love it. To me it seems unique & yet totally believable.

I also recently reread TML and realized all over again how wonderful that book is.
St. Martins gives you such awesome covers. (I love Suz Brockmann, but Ballantine gives her such generic, cheap looking, irrelevant-to-the-book covers that I wonder if they hate her. I don’t get it.) But clearly, St. Martin’s loves you, or at least their art department does. Even their semi-good efforts on your behalf are really quite good. The Crusie/Mayer books had genius-level covers for sure. Go you!

St. Martin’s gives me a lot of input in the covers which I am eternally grateful for. And Jen Enderlin really knows what makes a cover work. So yay, SMP!

I’m so excited about The Cinderella Deal coming out — I was at the store at 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning! Well, not really for the book, actually it was to buy lunch for work, but still…I looked for it and it wasn’t there yet. Huge disappointment for me. I looked after work too, but still haven’t found it yet — I am going to track it down, by golly. I am.

Got The Cinderella Deal today and read it through. Great fun! And now I am going to reread Crazy for You, which I love even tho’ the crazy ex-boyfriend is scary. Of course, that is part of the appeal. I like that your books are all different. I do get bored with authors who are on a treadmill, even tho’ it probably makes them scads of money.
