Great Sound: Autotune the News
Sep32009
I’ve been a huge Autotune the News fan ever since Rachel Maddow first showcased them. Their latest about geese and Chuck Grassley’s dragon is prime stuff:
You can find all eight on You Tube. Genius.
(Here’s the Time Magazine bit on them.)

I’m a child of Hip Hop, but even I have to say OMG. I think I hurt something laughing. The mullet, oh, the mullet.

Longish post ahead, but I just can’t help but rave! A FBfriend turned me onto Auto-Tune the News just yesterday (highly recommend #5 and #6, btw), and I thought I’d found all 7 of ‘em. Was so pleased to find #8 right here!
But the Time link — whoa! Above and beyond the call of blogging, dear lady! I also clicked the link to Time’s article on the Auto-Tune software, and was absolutely amazed by the secret “tuning” that had been done in the music industry in recent years. V. disturbing, and I need time to process that.
And what’s next? Will there be an auto-tune for writers? What happens when all the mid-listers are pitch-perfect? I guess only the geniuses will be breaking the writing rules and getting away with it.
Although, perhaps perfect pitch is more like getting your spelling and grammar right. In which case, we’ve had that for years. And that’s been a blessing . . . but also maybe fuels the underground of Leet Speak and LOLs New Language? Maybe music will also have a perfect pitch rebellion?
Also: learning the phrase/concept “creative abuse of auto-tuning” is just priceless. AFAIK, no one has creatively abused a spelling/grammar program . . . but while music abuse is still accessible, maybe writing abuse would only get “got” by grammar freaks.
Whoa. What an age we live in! Thanks for finding this; thanks for sharing it!

The combination of the earnestness of the news faces with the music is just priceless. So so funny. I’ll never be able to hear the phrase “very thin ice” singing “those geese are cooked” in my head!

Great fun! But, Micki, if you think that grammar-checking software has eliminated poor grammar from publishing, you’ve been reading in more rarefied regions than I. Although it may be more poor word usage that leads to the lie/ lay/ laid troubles that make me mildly annoyed by some authors.
Auto-tuning didn’t improve the messages, but may have made them more palatable – not always a good thing!

I’m not sure if it’s the lettuce-smoking or Joe Biden blessing us from space that’s my favorite, but Autotune the News does a public service by inserting some humor into the grimfest that is the news.
