What’s in a Name? Sales

Aug192009

So this book, I”m working on, Always Kiss Me Goodnight, is about a house haunted by possessive, obsessive ghosts. I gave it that title because that plaque (which is sold in a million variations everywhere) gives me the creeps, in the same way that “I’ll Be Watching You” gives me the creeps. However, that is not a universal reaction. Some people think the “Always Kiss Me Goodnight” sign is not a sign of an obsessive personality disorder but is merely loving and . . . whatever. Sting said that people come up to him all the time and say, “We played “I’ll Be Watching You” at our wedding,” to which he always says, “Well, good luck then.” That’s how I feel about that plaque.

However, since not everybody gets the cauld grue when they read those words, the title is misleading. So I need a new title. I’m ruminating and I have some weeks to go yet so it’s not an emergency, but anybody got any ideas?

I have other questions but later for those. I need a title that represents the story but also sells books. Because titles are marketing. Argh.

He named our beautiful Black Forest carved bear Julianne – I know, the Indian maiden was Julianne, but you have to admit it’s evocative and -wait, where was I? Right, the point of all this is to request Crazy For You and Tell Me Lies in UNABRIDGED cd’s. It drives ME crazy figuring out what’s missing in abridged versions. Thanks, Marly

Are you going for creepy in the title? And are the children going to deny knowledge of the ghosts? Or is it a more humorous story with a huge cast?

For the record, I don’t get those AKMG plaques either and threw away (er, donated, I mean, donated) one we were given as a gift.

The kids don’t talk about the ghosts to outsiders, but they don’t deny they’re there. Once they accept my heroine, they talk about them. I don’t think it’s particularly funny, but Lani does based on the very little she’s read. But then I never think my stuff is funny.

Personally, I’ve loved that title since you first mentioned it. It’s got a nostalgic feel and a slight underlayment of foreboding- much like Ammie Come Home by Barbara Michaels, a book that gives me the jeebers to this day, but which I LOVE and have read at least 10 times. A lot of suspense/ horror books have titles like that; sophisticated, not too obvious. I think as long as the cover is appropriate to the story the title will convey exactly what you want it to.

I keep having thoughts but then realise they sound like something written by Doris Stokes (British Spiritualist). So I still think Always Kiss Me Goodnight is your best bet. I suspect a title that referred too explicitly to ghosts and hauntings would land you on the horror shelf, unless it’s an obvious pop reference. I’m now humming The Specials’ song, Ghost Town http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpYyqaSYLyw

AKMG is a great title and it could go either way – like someone said – with the right cover.

And whether you believe it or not, Jenny, you’re HILARIOUS. It’s rare that I don’t laugh out loud at least 3 or 4 times while reading any of your books – and I’ve read them all (except Trust Me on This and The Cinderella Deal which I’ve just ordered used from Amazon) more than I’ve repeat-read any other authors books, hands down. I really thought Always Kiss Me Goodnight was a great title, because I find it a little creepy, too, but I trust Jen E’s instincts.

The only thing I can think of is “Someone to Watch Over Me”, but that might be the same thing; not everyone finds that needy and creepy. As a matter of fact, I might be the only one.

I’m not even going to try for a title to a book I haven’t read. But I do think you should keep in mind that there will always be people who don’t “get” the title, whatever it is, in the same way some people don’t get cultural references. That doesn’t mean all such reference need to be wiped away. AKMG is your own personal inside joke; go with it. Those of us who are privy will feel superior; and for the rest, what they don’t know won’t hurt them.

My favorite misunderstood song is the Dave Matthews Band’s “Crash Into Me.” It’s a classic late ’90s makeout song, but if you listen to the lyrics or have ever heard him introduce it at a concert, it’s actually about being a peeping Tom (“I watch you there/ through your window and I stare/ you wear nothing but you wear it so well”). Matthews jokes that he wrote about it rather than risking arrest for doing it.

“Within These Walls” gives my bookseller bell a confident ring, for what that’s worth. It /does/ sound like a Barbara Michaels though, doesn’t it? I can’t decided whether or not that’s good. I mean, I adore Michaels’s books, but I haven’t read AKMG, so I don’t know if that’s a good match. I have located database entries for eight other books with this title, only one of which was printed by a large press– and that one was non-fiction. So I think you’re good on that score. You’d be the first return on a search engine in short order.

Q: Are any other connotations associated with the phrase? Presumably it’s the first part of a quote from a wall plaque– what was the rest of it? (I swear I’ve seen one somewhere at a ‘fake antique’ shop, but I can’t remember what it said.)

Another Q: Does it capture the humor and whimsy of a Jenny Crusie novel the way most of her other titles do? (And does it need to?)

I also personally Love Lani’s idea of finding a phrase from TofS so much that I require the capital letter.

I was referring to “Within These Walls” when I was talking about the search engine returns, not AKMG. Sorry about the confusing paragraph. :-,

Jumping off the idea re: search engines, I checked Amazon and there was only one novel with the title “Always Kiss Me Goodnight,” and without dissing the author, I think you’d be able to bury a 1980 inspirational romance in any searches.

More importantly, the other books with the title are about the parent-child relationship:
“Always Kiss Me Good Night: Instructions on Raising the Perfect Parent by 147 Kids Who Know” by J.S. Salt
“Kiss Me Goodnight: Stories And Poems By Women Who Were Girls When Their Mothers Died” by Ann Murphy O’Fallon and Margaret Noonan Vaillancourt

So to me, all the signs are pointing in favor of keeping AKMG, but like Lani I assume St. Jenderlin knows better than I.

Anyone ever seen “Jeepers Creepers” the movie? Scary. During the movie someone plays the song Jeepers Creepers on a record player. It’s an older version on a scratchy record. That creeped me out!

Each Halloween we turn our house into a “haunted” house, funny enough our house IS haunted but we get along with our spirits, and Jeepers Creepers is one of the songs I have on my playlist. I have other old songs from the 20′s and 30′s as well as hard rock, metal and MJ’s “Thriller”. Another song I play that really creeps me out is The Carter Family singing “Will the Circle be Unbroken”. Kinda reminds me of “Poltergiest II” a little bit.

My point…maybe find a song title to use as your book title. It could also be something you weave into the story. Real ghosts do turn TVs and radios on when it’s to their liking. They also turn them off….which can get old fast. Maybe your ghosts like a particular song or try to use it to communicate.

Or I could be completely off base :)

Can we see the collage? That might give us a feel for the atmosphere in the story. Since it’s your first solo in awhile, I’m still expecting a WTT or Crazy for You. But, maybe not??

The cover can help here, too. Maybe the art department can make Always Kiss Me Goodnight work?

The plaque didn’t creep me out until you pointed out the clingy obsessiveness of the phrase. Thanks. :-) On the plus side, whenever I go to Hobby Lobby, I think of you. But, I did that before you mentioned the plaque. ;-)

That child’s prayer creeped me out when I WAS a child. “If I should die before I wake” Really?? You want me to pray for that right before I go to sleep? Ummm…no. Thanks, I’ll pass.

I like Within These Walls.

Lullabies in the Attic makes me think of Flowers in the Attic – a truly creepy book.

A Kiss at Midnight, maybe? Midnight makes me think of ghosts, but not sure it works since I haven’t ready any of the story (oops, did I repeat myself? LOL, my Daddy always said if you don’t ask for what you want, you won’t get it!)

I still think the cover art could sell your title, although I know that’s by no means a given.

I do really like it, though. The problem is that making it sound like a Crusie romcom is not going to fit the book, but the titles that might fit the book will not sound like a Crusie.

There’s so much in these responses that I need to read through them all again, such good stuff, but I do want to talk about another aspect of the book, so I think I’ll just go to another post to talk about that and maybe that will help with the title problem.

You Must Kiss Me Goodnight

or, depending on how creepy you want, You Will Kiss Me Goodnight

Going with a title that might be seen as a Crusie romcom shouldn’t be a problem if the cover art reflects the new book and not a Crusie romcom. I think the real problem would occur if the cover looks like all your other covers. Shades of the DLD chick lit cover here. Most people should be clued in by the cover art that this is not your traditional Crusie but something completely new and I suspect many will want to snatch it up just to check it out.

I thought “Always Kiss Me Goodnight” was good but I was open-minded to changing it, until I started reading this thread, googling the phrase, checking it on Amazon. There have been a lot of great suggestions on this thread, but unfortunately a lot of them made me think of novels, songs and movies in existence that are targeted toward women. AKMG is great because its main cultural touchstone seems to be as a slightly cheesy plaque. There isn’t a well-known creative work already associated with the phrase. I am big on search engine optimization (if you couldn’t tell from the comment I left a while back recommending that you meta-tag this site to make it easier to find :-) , and you would OWN that phrase on Google if you used it.

I do get that it sounds potentially romantic, but the kind of people who automatically buy your books without even seeing the cover or synopsis already know about this book coming out and that you’ve gone away from the rom-com genre. The book cover and synopsis should suffice to make it clear to the more casual Crusie fan that this is not a romantic comedy, and she can make an informed choice.

I’m trying to think if I’ve ever been disappointed by a book based on the author’s having gone in a slightly different direction than what I expected based on prior works. I don’t think so, though I remember the hullabaloo around Laura Kinsale’s Shadowheart because people didn’t feel sufficiently forewarned about the sort of BDSM aspect. I thought it was a logical expression of the characters’ feelings — not at all gratuitous — but obviously if someone finds that inherently problematic or offensive, she’s going to be troubled that there was no forewarning before she bought the book.

I started thinking you should keep AKMG. But then I thought about what you’d call Nadine’s book. This isn’t Nadine Goodnight’s book, right?

Of the others posted (or parts thereof) I like these:
Within These Walls
These Old Familiar Places or
..This Old Familiar Place (to homey, maybe)
A Soul to Take
They Kiss us at Midnight
Cold Kiss Goodnight (again with the Nadine issue)
Lullabies in the Attic (immediate FITA assoc. could be bad or good)

On the lyrics theme, I came up with (too much fun):
But Not Tonight (Depeche Mode)
Haven’t Felt So Alive in Years (Depeche Mode)
Everybody Knows (L. Cohen) or
.. Everybody Knows that You Live Forever
Sisters of Mercy (band name)
So Take This Night (Black Lab)
Every Room You Lay Your Head (Hem)
All Your Little Children’s Games (Sq Nut Zippers)
This Feeling Has No Name (SNZ)
Each Morning I Dream of Twilight (SNZ) (cash in on twilight ref?)
How Tricky Dreams Can Be (SNZ)

ok, better stop now. getting obsessed. have more blog titles at any rate.

Always Kiss Me Goodnight never struck me as creepy but the wall plaques are kind of ubiquitous. I want to like them but they are everywhere I turn and that turns me off. Even though when my husband is home I never go to sleep without my goodnight smooch. Within these Walls could be creepy but not to the point of making me think I’m getting a horror novel. Makes me think of secrets. Lullabies in the Attic makes me shudder but in a good way.

If books with those three titles were spine-out on a bookstore shelf I would think AKMG was a romance *or* a woman-with-a-stalker thriller depending on the font. WtW hits as a serious family-with-a-secret drama,. LitA gives me a very specific mental image: a multi-generational ghost story/murder mystery. I can see a woman coming home to her family home and hearing the noises in the attic that she heard as a child and everyone told her was just her imagination. Only now she knows better.

But that’s just me.

Okay, someone up there suggested Forget Me Not, which brought to mind the game when you’re pulling daisy petals and do the He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not thing. I think, “He Loves Me Not,” (or She, not sure of the ghosty gender), with black and white petals drifting down onto blood spatter (the only color on the cover) would be throughly creepy. But then again, I always found the he loves me flower thing disturbing. Just throwing it out there. It seems to bring in the kid/game aspect as well as the creepy feel. I love the title Always Kiss Me Goodnight, but I am having issues visualizing a crrepy cover that ties in to the title and the little we know of the novel. Can you chat with the art department and get their take on it?

i love the AKMG title… but i have to say that my favorite authors (and you’re one of them) could name their books anything they wanted and i’d hunt them down anyway. it might not help with new readers, but i’d still buy it whatever you call it. jeez, speaking of stalker-ish…

but in the spirit of things…
“watching over you” – ?
or “watches over you”
“home is where the heart is” – that’s always kind of freaked me out ’cause i’d get images from “the telltale heart” lodged in my brain. something else along those lines – like, i dunno, the house being the soul of the home? i’m not sure how to capture what’s running around in my brain, but it’s something along those lines.

“lullabies in the attic” reminded me of “flowers in the attic,” which didn’t creep me out so much as make me wonder what medication that author was on.

Another plus: alphabetically, “Always” is pretty close to the top of the list.

(-: If it were a funny novel, I’d go for “My House, My Rules,” but I’m pretty sure that’s been done. Obsessive parents, obsessive ghosts, not such a big difference.

However, if you are open to a new idea, stay open, and see what pops up.

I have been thinking about this. Part of the problem is that the reader is free to interpret the title any way s/he wishes (it’s a free world in that one respect). So, even if you named it something like, “Strange, Creepy Things are Happening in My House” someone would still think it was an ironic comedy. Or maybe a non-fiction paranormal book with humor, ala Mary Roach.

Maybe you could subtitle it? AKMG: A Tale of Two Ghosts. (Sorry, that just rolled out of the brain.) Or AKMG: A Thriller in Ectoplasm (Sorry again, sucky title for this. But you get the idea, anyway.)

Plus side: the two-part title gives it kind of a Gothic, Victorian flavor. (That is a plus, isn’t it?) And it gets away from the romance sort of title. At least, I think most romances are four words or less.

Disclosure: I really haven’t seen these plaques in cultural context, so I really don’t know if you are bucking a general trend here. Like having a chainsaw massacre story, and calling it “MacDonald’s Farm.” Or writing a sweet romance between Dixie Gore and Danny Gutziano, and calling it “Gore and Guts, Forever.” I’m sure the juxtaposition is enough to be edgy, but not so much as to be tasteless, right?

(-: Or maybe many of your readers are grumpy women who are slightly suspicious of intimacy, so Always Kiss Me Goodnight sounds a little too perfect to be true? I figure that’s what’s behind my mildly antagonistic reaction to the phrase. LOL!

Just brainstorming a little bit. Take with two grains of salt.

And finally (and I promise I’ll stop here), one of my favorite old songs that brings a chill to me “My love dwelt in a northern land” with a line “And fled like ghosts before the day”. I was toying with “I’ll Always Kiss You Goodnight”… it’s along the same lines but changing the direction to an eternal promise seems haunting. Kind of “until death do us part” turned “even death won’t part us”.

Or if you want to go off some “Turn of the Screw” quotes:

I think the inherent problem here is that any title with the words ‘kiss’ or ‘heart’ in it could be taken in a romantic way. Also titles like ‘Always and Forever’. To me that just screams schmaltzy romance where the heroine ‘saves herself for her one true love’ and she is rescued by a handsome outlaw that turns out to be the gazillionaire poet of her dreams who rides a motorcycle and helps underprivileged children, and his tender caresses ‘awake her from her maiden’s dream’. Blech.

On the other hand, anything with ghosts in the title runs the risk of either being too obvious or cheesy. One of the reasons I like AKMG is because it has a certain ambiguousness to it- it could be about almost any kind of relationship, but it has a strong possesive tang to it-it’s a command, not a suggestion, and there is no love mentioned at all- that I feel would be reinforced by the cover art. Honestly, as long as there isn’t any bodice ripping or heaving chests on it I don’t see the problem. I think you’re going to run into the same problems for any title you come up with, so you might as well call it what you want and fugeddaboutit.

Another vote for AKMG – I hadn’t seen the plaques (and could have lived without seeing them by the way) and the title struck me as far more Raymond Chandler retro.

I’m with the others – I think the cover art and typography will set the mood far more than the title (Does anyone else remember Mary Gordon’s first book where the cover screamed light domestic cozy?) But all of the titles including AKMG are kind of generic until you actually read the book and then it’s the writing that makes them memorable. I’m thinking of Mary Stuart’s old stuff – Thunder on the Right, Wildfire at Midnight, My Brother Michael – titles that mean nothing until you’ve read them and then I’ve never forgotten them.

BTW, what does ToTS mean? I’m behind on my acronyms.

I wonder how many of us lean toward AKMG because it’s become imprinted on our brains as an upcoming Crusie title. We’ve all really been looking forward to this book. Might we resist a title change because subconsciously it makes us think we’re not getting that book? Or, maybe I just need less humidity and more sleep. :)

Personally, I never caught a whiff of creep from the AKMG plaques before Jenny brought it up. Without prior knowledge, I’d be dependent on AKMG’s tagline for the flavor of the book. But, what’s wrong with that? Titles that convey exactly the right vibe are darned scarce, and if it weren’t for taglines, I’d be even more lost than usual, as cover art is unreliable, IMHO.

How about an AKMG tagline challenge, Jenny? Not that we’re prize greedy, or anything like that. We just want you to have everything you need before you make a final decision. We’re only thinking of you. Not prizes.

I just reread Jenny’s original request, the book blurb on the WIP page, and all the comments, and realize I am confused (big surprise) about the significant players to whom the title refers. I had gotten the impression it was the house demanding affection, but I don’t know if that’s correct.

Would it give too much away to identify the ‘me’ in AKMG? Is it the house? Is it one of the ghosts? Is it all of the ghosts? Is it Emmaline? Is it Emmaline’s ex? Because, if the title does have to be changed, it would help us to know which way to pitch the woo-woo.

Meredith B – that’s basically what Twilight is! Who knew it was a demographic hybrid like that?

I love the “Dead Billionaire Sheik’s Virgin Babymama” titles.

Good luck with the galleys, Jenny!

Preview isn’t working, so I apologize for anything in my post that isn’t right!

After all this discussion about the the creepy potential of AKMG, the photo REALLY creeped me out, even though I’m sure the photographer didn’t intend it that way at all. It’s like the torso version of Hello Kitty’s mouth-less-ness.
