The cone is off and Wolfie is fine. Back to the vet’s on Friday to get the stitches out, but he’s already completely back to normal. And thank you all for posting good vibes for him!

Oh I have had the experience with a couple of dogs. My miniature Schnauzer had to weaqr one a couple of times after surgeries–it was so sad watching try to get through doorways without banging the cone into the door frames! Sad, but funny! Looked like he was either trying to receive signals from outer space or he was playing Hoover the Vacuum cleaner (depending on if he tried to run with his head up or down)!! My cats would NEVER tolerate one–I shudder to even imagine it!

I’m glad other people post photos of their animals with cones. My boyfriend took a photo of my large grey cat with his cone and shaved spot after a foster initiated a battle. Toby (my cat) looked so silly with the cone. We’d try to give him treats but he’d knock them into the cone and we’d have to try and get them out for him. He did not like the bonnet look no matter how hard we tried to convince him it was masculine by adding a bow tie to the front…

Our dog had one after ear surgery and he kept scraping it on the floor. DH rigged up a rope from the front edge to the dog’s harness so that the dog couldn’t leverage the cone off. By the end it was put together with duct tape and rope and looked pathetic as did our poor doggie. Look pathetic that is.

Poor puppy. It’s really cold comfort for everyone involved to say, “It’s for his own good.” But . . . the alternatives are even worse. Hope it heals super-fast, and the days fly by.

It’s due to come off next Friday, so I thought maybe on Wednesday . . .
He really is coping pretty well. It’s just so sad to hear that little cone scraping on the floor.

Cone of Shame! (I loved Up)

Be careful about taking it off early. Some dogs will have forgotten the surgery and some will decide to reopen it even if it looked healed to you.

And then you’re standing in the vet’s office looking a little sheepish as she says “I thought I told you ten days” as she restitches it.

But some dogs really do forget it’s there, so just be careful.

For my dogs, I think the worst part of the cone is that they really looked as if they felt self-consciously undignified. Like they knew it must look hilariously ridiculous and they were distressed to look so funny. Poor things.

My dog had one of them for a while and he was totally embarassed and insulted. She couldn’t even meet our eyes. It was a flipping riot.

It was worse when we first brought him home. They’d put a huge cone on him because his neck is so thick and it was unmanageable. Then we trimmed two inches off all around and it was doable. He doesn’t like it but he’s not unhappy. And it’ll be off soon. It’s supposed to be on for ten days, but I figure we’ll try it after a week. He’ll be so happy.

Poor baby. I’m sure he hates the cone, but he actually looks pretty cheerful in the picture.

My cat hates going to the vet with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns. He’s a black cat, but he must have some Siamese in him, because he has the most horrible yowl when you put him in his carrier. I’ve actually had people come running, thinking someone is torturing an animal. He’s just really unhappy and wants to be sure that everyone knows it.

Oh, bless him. Actually, he looks remarkably calm about it. Some cats become so distressed and hysterical about those collars that it is better to keep applying new dressings, even though they lick and bite at them.
Poor Wolfie. Please give him a comforting petting from me (and probably from everyone else here, too!)

poor wolfie! i had to keep one on one of my cats for a while. that sucked – she kept turning herself inside out and escaping. i hope wolfie stays contained!

I must have never left elementary, because I laughed at the cone. I know he must be irritated, but the…cone. Snort. I’m just imagining all the way he is trying to get out of it.
