In Apology

Apr162009

This is on YouTube so it’s safe. It’s probably not new to most of you since it’s five days old, but it made me cry, in a good way, so I offer it to you in lieu of flowers. And candy.

Sunshine made me watch this just last night. When she hits that first note, I got tears in my eyes! And then, the song she sang from La Miz. ACK! More tears.

The best was seeing Simon’s face though. THAT was priceless.

I loved this woman. Hope she wins!

I needed that. Truly glorious. How incredibly centered and grounded Susan Boyle seems. Also, I was impressed by judge Amanda’s class, and appreciated her pointed ‘take that, you mannerless gits’ admonishment to the audience. Go, Susan.

I saw this first a couple of days ago and have watched it at least half a dozen times. I am so pleased that this woman not only wowed everybody in that audience and viewers at home, but that she’s become an Internet sensation. I’d rather see stories like this a thousand times than one more bit about Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, or Tom & Katie’s daughter Suri.

What a heart warming story. I also saw this a few days ago and cried throughout the entire performance. Figured I’d go back the next day when I was less emotional and take another look. Cried the whole way through.

This is even better than candy.

I rarely cry, but I did now. This woman is amazing. Even though she was so self-assured, she clearly did not expect to win. And such a beautiful voice!

OH yeah. I’ve also been watching this over and over. Her dress/hair said “inexperience” but the way she commanded that stage, held that mike like she owned it, said “experience,” so I was uncertain that first time. But from that amazing first note to the long stretch of rising notes at the end–awesome. This woman is astonishing*.

There are now some interviews with her up on YouTube. She’s thrilled but cautious–”baby steps.” SO centered.

*Interesting how many words expressing awe start with an “a”. I didn’t even get to “astounding.”

My class (Sociology of Death and Dying) was talking about this today. While we do think she has an amazing talent and it is an inspirational story, we were looking at why people had the assumption that she was either a joke or bad. Beauty does not equal skills/talent.

(In case your wondering what she has to do with death/dying, we were talking earlier this week about disgust in relation to death rituals across the globe. How we disgust ourselves and not others. And those faces before she started singing showed disgust.)

I know, I know, I’m ruining a good moment. I’ll shut up now.

What’s so astounding – the dissonnance between her looks/class and her vocal ability?

Simon has learned during his time in America not to judge people by their appearance or background. I loved seeing his face, he looked like a chocaholic at a Godiva store. I believe what he said, that he’d known all along there would be something there.

And I’m not at all impressed by the audience’s initial reaction. She was hitting all their cultural assumption buttons, wasn’t she. To someone who doesn’t have those particular buttons in the first place, they were simply cruel.

Boy, Bob really cleans up well…and the Brit accent is amazing. Am I the only one who thinks Piers is a dead ringer for the Bobster? Or vice versa.

I finally got around to watching this a day or so ago, and Susan Boyle does have an amazing voice! And with the situation, the set-up as it was, I got goosebumps hearing her. (Didn’t cry, though (-:.)

OTOH, the set-up seemed to be kind of fake and clumsy. I watched the extended version (something like 8 minutes or 11 minutes??), and it just felt like they were milking people for response. And the lady judge’s comments seemed rather pat; did they set the audience up somehow off-camera to provoke all that disgust?

And I will admit to having a sort of suspicious mind — I wondered if Susan Boyle might have presented herself the way she did (and seriously, only the hair was a problem, I thought) to heighten the contrast? I wondered what exactly her singing background was . . . because she’s very, very good.

Well, anyway, I don’t think my suspicions were correct, because if there were a whiff of hoax about this whole things, the paparazzi would have found it by now.

I hope it’s part of a new trend — good news, good things, finding coins under rocks instead of moldy, unmentionable things (-:.

I think these shows are inherently cruel, which is probably good because creative fields are inherently cruel so finally a little truth on TV. Whatever she got in initial reaction at this audition, at least she got the audition. Most places would reject her on age and lack of sophistication alone.

But I have to admit my favorite part now is watching the judges do that 180. I have a feeling a lot of the audience was pulling for her from the beginning, or at least feeling what most people who have talked about it were feeling: give her a chance, don’t make fun of her, come on, Susan, SHOW THEM. So I think they selectively showed audience reactions including the one young girl who mouthed, “Who’s Elaine Paige?” to increase the viewer’s anxiety for Susan Boyle. That’s just good editing. But I don’t believe the judges saw it coming. Their reactions were just too emotional. I know, I know, they’re performers, but there was something lovely about how gobsmacked they looked. Although Cowel did shoot that one look at the camera to see if it was on him.

I love this video so much. I keep going back to watch it when I’ve had a bad day.

In the spirit of uplifting videos, I feel the need to share this one. I give you Validation.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cbk980jV7Ao

It’s a short B&W film with TJ Thyne (of Bones fame) that gives me the warm fuzzies every time I watch it. :)
