It sounds as though you gave her a long and happy life, and that is a wonderful and precious gift. We all have to leave this plane of existence sooner or later, and I have never perceived ant great difference in the loss of a two-legged friend or a four-legged one: as far as I am concerned, they are all 'people'. I put in a dedication in my latest book, just out, to the dog of my heart, who lived from 1964-1976: his memory is as vivid to me today as it was 32 years ago when his happy little life reached its close. Once the souls cross the threshold to the Afterlife, perhaps guided (even if human) by canine psychopomps, they are always with us, everywhere, part of our eternal present, and no longer subject to the distressingly rigid, linear pattern of chronological existence. And a big heart. He's been terrific all through this. About sixteen or seventeen years ago, I went through a spate of adopting homeless animals. Four dogs and three cats. Lucy was the last of that pack, and she had a wonderful life right up to the end, when things got bad very fast, so she didn't suffer long. The one thing I learned watching the dogs and cats leave one by one is that the worst thing I can do is try to hold on to them, so I know it's good she didn't linger. But it's been a bad couple of days, made much better by your good thoughts. Thank you very much Bob has a big mouth. And a big heart. He’s been terrific all through this.
