Update
The pantry walls are down, although the studs are still up in one wall until the contractor gets the header up.
Still haven’t found the iPhone or the camera recharger but have high hopes for finding SOMETHING soon.
Racked up my knee again which is slowing me down seriously. The first time I screwed it up was in November at that beach house, but I thought it was okay. Turns out fifty thousand trips up and down stairs carrying big boxes of books will make it go out again. Argh.
Working on new book. Very happy.
First chapter of Dogs and Goddesses is up over at the D&G website because we’re done, we’re done, we’re done. Until the copy edits.
Milton is barking at something in the hall. I have no idea what, but he’s been going for a long time so I’d better go see. He has great fixity of purpose, our Milton.

Sorry to hear about the knee. Excited about Chapter 1! Can’t wait to head over there and read it! Thanks for sharing, and congratulations! How fun.
Ugh the joys of construction projects. And if the pantry walls are down…where do you store the chocolate? Oh my.
Maybe Milton found the iphone for you.
Read the first chapter…definitely want to read the rest.
Take care of that knee. Knee replacement is not that much fun.
Wow, first comment. I’ve never had that happen before.
As one who has moved more times than she cares to think (first an Army Brat and now a habitual mover), I promise the iPhone and charger will turn up. I swear.
I just won’t swear as to when…
I can’t believe it! In the time it took me to write and edit my comment, two (count ‘em!) others posted before I did.
Sheesh.
So sorry to hear about your knee. Take it easy and baby it if you can. I have no solution for finding your camera charger, but if your iPhone is turned on (and the battery hasn’t run down) maybe you could try calling it and follow the ring?
By the time I realized it was missing, the battery had run down.
And speaking of realizing something was missing, what Milton was yelling was, “Oh my god, you locked Wolfie outside!” Kept it up for a good half hour at least until I finally said, “WHAT????” and started counting heads. Milton is now sacked out on my foot, exhausted from screaming, “LASSIE’S IN THE WELL.” Or whatever.
My sympathies about the knee. DH fell and hurt his right one about a month ago and then two weeks ago fell and wratched his left. Now we’re on vacation and he fell again on Tuesday.
Of course, he’s being a typical man and whining about everything. He has a cold and lots of bruises from when he fell (he’s on blood thinners because he has a mechanical heart valve so he bruises like crazy) and he’s driving me up the wall with the feeling sorry for himself and the moaning about how he’s ruining our trip. I love him but he’s making me nuts.
Good for Milton for being so persistent.
Jenny,
You know, they sell chargers at the Apple store. Which means you have an excuse to go to the Apple store! (Which could be dangerous, but…the Apple store!)
As for the knee: Ice. Lots of ice and ibuprofen. Or, frozen baby lima beans, they mold to your knee and stay cold longer than peas. Best darn use I’ve ever come up with for ‘em!
Oh, good for Milton. Wolfie owes him big time.
My knee went out a couple of months ago when my 100 lb Akita dog ran into it. I was threatened with an MRI and possible arthroscopy but resisted. I’ve been strengthening the ligaments and yesterday visited my fabulous chiropractor who has been doing ultrasound on it. He said it’s getting better and now that the swelling is down he thinks it’s housemaid’s knee (of course there is a bigger more technical term but housemaid’s knee would be appropriate). He ordered a special strap for it that will elevate the patella and support it while I continue to work on the ligaments. I’m thinking of it as the wonder-bra for old saggy knees. Grin.
Dogs are amazing with their desire to help. A couple nights ago, my Golden retriever got out of her bed, walked halfway through the house, and came to my bed. She put her face in my hand and just stood there–I knew she’d just gone to the bathroom in the last hour, so that wasn’t it. I was saying, “What, Tasyy, what?” and about five minutes later, there was a rumble of thunder…within a couple minutes of the first thunder the house was being pelted with pinecones, the rain was going sideways, and little branches were falling everywhere. It looked like a minor war zone the next morning–and Tassy KNEW IT WAS COMING! She came to tell me beforehand. How do dogs KNOW?
So sorry about your knee. Ice packs and Motrin is what I’ve heard to take. And staying off it (good luck with THAT).
Sorry about the knee, Jenny. I have a bad one myself. Try using a knee brace when you have to be up and about.
the studs are still up in one wall — So THAT’s where you get your heroes!
LOL Talpianna.
Poor Jenny, rest the knee as much as possible. Keep the leg elevated on a footstool or ottoman if you have one. Ice packs and frozen lima beans are a good suggestion. I was told to put ice on for twenty minutes then heat for twenty minutes. I think the advice varies with the doctor.
My knee got so bad they had to replace it. Not fun as Louis has said but neither is constant pain and swelling or being told you will be on crutches for the rest of your life otherwise. Crutches are pretty hard to maneuver when you have MS.
I have read that in Japan they watch the animals in the zoo for warnings about earthquakes. I know my dog can sense a thunderstorm long before we know one is coming. They are remarkably smart creatures. Smarter than we give them credit for.
Okay, so you can’t track down the iPhone by sound. My other suggestion is to check all new openings really well before the contractor closes them up again.
And now Tal has my mind running totally in the gutter.
It may be lack of sleep, but I ’bout busted a gut over the image of Milton valiantly barking, “Lassie’s in the well!” I think you should definitely put Milton in charge of iPhone search and recovery. He needs a hobby, and we’ve just learned he’s good at search and rescue.
Stay off the knee. Unless Milton starts barking again…you might want to investigate sooner next time. Poor Wolfie.
You know, one of the first things I do when something has come up missing is look in the yard for…um…UFO’s in the grass, usually gift wrapped in brown. I know an iPhone is kinda big, but I had a dog that ate a light bulb once, and a bowl of Easter Hershey Kisses, which were wrapped in pastel foil and made the yard quite festive. (The dog was unharmed and lived to feast on my kids socks.) What they lack in taste they make up for in determination.
Actually, I know a lot of people like that too. But they never look as cute and don’t wag their tails until you forgive them.
Finally, a good use for lima beans. I learn so much on this site!
Studs on the wall, it needed to be addressed, thank you Talpianna.
Jenny, for the sake of fiction lovers and dogs everywhere (but esp in your home), please spare yourself and resist hauling and pushing, lifting and shoving! Teenage boys in the area are being deprived a means of earning gas money by saving your back and knees.
About the knee - ironically, one of the solutions is exercise. Not hauling up and down the stairs, though. Being that the knee has no muscles of its own, it’s held together by the leg muscles around it. Strengthen those, and it will give the tendons inside the knee a chance to heal.
While sitting at the keyboard, stretch your leg straight in front of you, and raise and lower it slightly. You can use the bag of lima beans as a weight.
Now, of course you shouldn’t take health advice from random people on the internet, but see if you can’t talk to a physical therapist or at the very least a competent exercise specialist.
Feel better!!!
Oh poor baby!
Moving is one of my least favorite occupations ever. Even moving inside your own house is not so fun.
I can just imagine Milton “Mom! Mom! Wolfie’s outside! He fell in the well! Mom! Quit taking pictures and help!”
Hey, gang! Moot update!

Oooo–my sympathies about the knee. I can totally empathize with that pain! Mine acts up every few months and it is always a little different each time. Letely I have been having severe cramps on either side to the poiont where it wants to collapse–not good!! I haven’t found much to help it. Tendonitis has no cure except rest and it doesn’t sound like you will be getting much of that any time soon!! *grin* A couple of glasses of good wine in the evening will make you forget your worries, keep you mellow, and make that pain in your knee a dim memory…
Guess I better go check out D&G–haven’t read anything fun in a long time–I need some joy in my life!!
Oh–and Happy Mother’s Day to you, Jenny! Hope you got to spend some of it talking to your DD!!
Knee pain seems to be on everyone’s mind, whether they know someone who has it or they themselves have it. All the remedies above are good, especially the one where you get someone else to do the heavy lifting and carrying. Jenny, if you do not take care of your knee you will have worse pain later than you do now.
Some years ago I tore my suspensory ligaments in my left knee, and later fell onto marble flooring on both knees. The former I could barely hobble with, and I found out why tough football players cry. Keeping it elevated was the best thing, then cold packs and prescription pain killers that made me sleepy. The knees now? Losing the cartilage in both of them, so it becomes interesting when going up or down stairs. Glucosamine sulphate helps reduce the joint pain.
See Jenny, what you might have to look forward to for your knees.
Anyway, hooray for Milton for letting the human know one of his pals was outside. You never said whether Wolfie was traumatized for being outside on his lonesome. And thanks for your interesting post.
