Pink
Pink is fifteen pounds of solid muscle and independence. She doesn’t want to be lifted onto the bed, she wants to get up there herself, but she can’t, so she whines to be up and then when I lean down to get her, she backs up. If I do manage to get hold of her, she pushes off with her back feet so that my lifting her feels like she’s jumping. I see Pink as a tomboy/Goth puppy. She’d have tattoos if she could.
This is Pink on the footstool that she jumped on all by herself. Behind her on the floor is Veronica, who does not jump. Jumping is for the little people.
This is Wolfie on the chair next to Pink, still recovering from the influx of three new dachshunds:
And this is Pink, Milton, and Wolfie all prepared to leap. You will notice Veronica is not with them.
What I am learning from Pink is how annoying independence can be. Every time she whines to get up and then backs away, and I say, “Pink, for heaven’s sake, get over here,” I think of somebody I know saying in the same exasperated voice, “You know, you could accept some help some time.” Autonomy is a good thing unless you’re backing away from help you need. So Pink and I are going to learn to trust together.
But at least we’re not afraid of leaping. Sheesh.

Okay, so Pink shouldn’t be a leaper in the duchshund rodeo. How about a barrel racer?
I totally get you and Pink. I’m like that too. Thanks for the fab pix. What a cute bunch you have.
I wrote a character like pink it can be annoying. But I think Pink’s cuteness makes up for it.
This is making me want a dog. I’m out.
Pink may not be able to have tattoos, but piercings are always possible–she certainly has the ears for it! Them!
I like Pink more than Veronica, although Wolfie is still the most adorable boy of them all.
I think Pink is saying: “I don’t need you to TAKE OVER and help me all the way. If you would just think things through and put a few STEPS in around here, life would be just peachy.”
Like these:

It looks like Wolfie is smiling. I think he’s secure in his place.
Also, I think the spot on Pink’s ankle looks like it could be a tatoo. Which, if I were going to get a tattoo, would be where I’d get mine. (At least, it’s close to her ankle…)
I’m with Strop on preferring Pink to Veronica. She definitely seems a lot more easy going and fun; Veronica would just get on my nerves. But Wolfie has the most personality I’ve ever seen in a dog.
So, sounds like Pink is like Mare in UMF. That’s a whole lot of personality!
I had a big wedge-shaped foam pillow for my back which I put next to the ottoman beside the bed. Pink can get up on her own now and amazingly so can Veronica.
Veronica has a certain Je ne sais quoi about her. She’s a dog of deep thoughts and mystique with some, “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful . . . and don’t underestimate me either” thrown in. Pink will either eventually succeed at leaping or doom herself to a life of exasperation.
I have a still-fairly-new-to-me brother and sister pair of English Cocker Spaniels who will be 8 months old at the end of the week. This weekend, I realized how often they act like human children. When Pyxi is bored and wants to play, she either barks at her brother Nat or just trots over, jumps on him and grabs his ear in her teeth. They play “take away” with whatever toy one of them has. My friend’s three year old and five year daughters do something similar. Except for the ear grabbing.
That’s it provide the means so they can be independent. Yay! for Veronica and Pink. Wolfie looks like he’s taking it all in stride and saying, “Kids. Watcha gonna do.”
I love the dogs, but you’re going to get me into big trouble. I’ve been surfing pet shelters in Brussels and I keep finding dogs I want. It’s all your fault. You’re setting a bad bad example. I am not allowed a dog. We can just about look after ourselves in this family, we cannot have a dog. And it would have to be two dogs to keep each other company during the day. See what I mean. Trouble.
Anyway, they are all adorable, but I need to see more of Milton before drawing any firm conclusions. And which Milton is he named after?
I have no idea who Milton is named after. He came with his name. The Dachshund Rescue lady asked the man who dropped him off if he was a Paradise Lost fan and he just looked at her blankly, so it’s not literary.
Milton, needless to say, will have the blog entry tomorrow. And then I will stop boring people with pictures of my pets.
We’re not bored. I think it’s great that you adopted all three. I certainly hope that someone told the lady who had the girls that they found a wonderful home and would be well taken care of. I know if I was dying and had to give away my pets I would want to know they found a loving home.
Wolfie looks like he’s saying “Oh, Mom, what have you done? They’re nice and all but three?” He knows you love him best though.
Perhaps you could tell us a little about Wolfie and his story, too–I know I haven’t heard it
They all look like a lot of fun. Besides the four dachsunds, do you have any more dogs?
God bless all the puppies out there for honestly sharing their abundance of wisdom. Their never-ending unconditional love is pretty cool, too. Thanks for sharing those beautiful pix.
More Milton!
Oh, please! Do we sound bored?
I don’t think Veronica is incapable of the whole jumping thing. She just doesn’t see why she should bother if there’s someone around to do things for her. And then she sees the other kids having all the fun so she grudgingly jumps up too. I’m telling you, I used to know this chick. Jenny, I can give you so many insights into her personality.
Pink, on the other hand, is saying “don’t call me short!” Um, yeah. I know her too.
Wolfie, I can tell from the pic, has decided that he is the old timer and must, with great forebearance, set an example.
Definitely not bored, Jenny. I LOVE dogs - have two of my own, both rescued. They are small Rat Terriers. I would have a bunch if I didn’t have to work in an office full time.
Steps or ramps are great for small dogs. Saves their backs and yours.
We’re not bored. When you have done blogs on all three new kids, how about one each on the remaining animals? We see Wolfie, but there is one more dog and the cat, right? They deserve to take centre stage once in a while, too.

I’ve been sitting on my hands because I don’t like to be the one to ask the nosy questions. But nobody else seems to ask them, so curiosity is winning out.
Does this mean that you’ve given up the idea of moving to New York? In a city having so many dogs would be far more complicated.
My daughter said the same thing, Ingrid. I didn’t actually think about it at the time, but yeah, I think so. I have the apartment there I can rent by the night, and I think I’ll stick with that when I go in.
As for Wolfie:

Lucy I haven’t blogged about. She’s a beagle mix from the pound, and I adore her, but she’s sixteen and at this point, she’s mostly sleeping. The new kids are learning not to harass her, and she’s sacked out at the foot of the bed right now. And there’s a picture of her with the gang in the Milton post, so that’s coming right up.
I’m very much not bored and am living vicariously through you dog-wise. My family had a beagle growing up and she mostly slept all day too. Also was horribly behaved. But she was a real sweetheart of a dog and good for me and my brother in that she put up with two growing children determined to love her to death. I’m looking forward to the picture of Lucy.
I suspect that Veronica may actually have some self-esteem issues. Sometimes that comes off as pampered, but I think she might just be tenative. Is she Pink’s “older” sister by any chance? I’d bet a nickle that living with all the other dogs will encourage her to go ahead and take the plunge, or leap.
Veronica is younger. It’s Lucy (16), Wolfie (8), Pink (6), Veronica (1 1/2) and Miltie (11 months). Miltie’s birthday is the sixteenth, I think. I’d put a candle in his kibble, but he’d eat it.
Those are some adorable dogs you have– they *almost* make me want to run out and find myself a dachshund, which is saying a lot because I’m normally not much of a dog person.
How did Pink come by her name, or did you say?
Still waiting for a blog on the cat. You just have one now? Perhaps she needs a support group–would she like to IM with Sethra, Aliera, Tia, Gremlin, Bastet, Shadow-cat, and Cassie?
I am also living vicariously through your dog adoptions! Since I live in an apartment and can’t get one of my own.
You know pretty soon Veronica is going to have you building ramps upto all of your furniture.
i’m not bored by the doggie pics either. in fact i’m enjoying them a lot. we’ve been without a dog for over a year now and it still feels weird. i am wondering if they are going to get crocheted hats or coats out of varigated yarn? that would be cute and would nicely blend two of your collections. can’t wait to hear more about Milton tomorrow.
It would be impossible to post too many dachshund pictures. Although pictures of Lucy and the cat would also be nice. See-we want more pictures, not fewer!
Today was a stressful day and I thought how nice it would be to lay down at your house and let your herds run all over me. For some reason this sounded relaxing to me. One of our dogs-Bailey- whines to get into bed, but when you get out of bed to get her she runs under the bed. This can go on for hours. It is a very good thing she is cute.
I meant to say this on the last post, but you know they have doggie steps:

And these are apparently on sale. It won’t keep Milton from flinging himself off whatever he can climb up on, but maybe Veronica would eventually be persuaded to make her royal progress up onto and down from beds and sofas. Or not.
Actually, dogs CAN have tattoos. When I got Daisy (black lab/boder collie mix) four years ago at the Humane Society in Louisville, they tattooed her with an X on her belly to indicate she is spayed. It’s green and about the size of my thumbnail. Not very exotic, but a tattoo just the same!
