“Ever join Law and Order 15 minutes in?”

This is a great trick for bad films. 15 minutes or even half an hour in and you avoid all the tiresome repetition and get into the good stuff with a healthy dose of confusion. “Meet Joe Black” for instance is a way better experience when you don’t know whats going on.

I just found this through a Google Alert and I have to say this is an excellent site and a great blog. I have always liked Jane Espenson’s work, particularly on Firefly, and loved Finding Serenity. I am anxiously awaiting Serenity Found as I type! I will now bookmark this site, and look in again. Thanks.

Both books are on my wish list (and Christmas is approaching!).

With my usual impeccable timing, I’ve thought of another question, and whilst Jane has moved on, I’d be interested to know what everyone else here thinks. Has anyone else noticed a similarity in the crews of Serenity and Andromeda? They had a random episode of Andromeda on UK TV last night, and I can see similarities between the two captains, Inara and Romy, Jane and Tyr, Zoe and Bekka and Wash and Harper. You could even push it to Book and Rev Bem, I suppose. So what do you think? Is it just me? Do I need to get out more? Is there some writing convention about teams that I’m unaware of?

Oh, Jane, you will be so disappointed in the second episode of Chuck if you ever get around to it. It’s like a completely different show. I still haven’t talked myself into watching the third episode yet because of it.

I’ll be right behind Jenny (waving a flamingo over her head) to snag a copy of any book you write, Jane. That last point: look for examples, not for rules, is key to telling a story rather than following a formula. Disney and Writer’s Boot Camp are both great for giving that to their students; the majority of other Hollywood workshops don’t seem to get it.
