Name That Amusement Park

Sep202007

So Bob and I are brainstorming, uh, wargaming a possible next book–not sure, just talking about it, nothing to see here, don’t get invested–which would be set in a very small, very old amusement park in the middle of nowhere. And we’re both brain-fried and we can’t think of anything to call the park and I remembered the genius that is Argh Ink readers. So we’re having a CONTEST!!!! Yeah, okay, we’ve done this before, but this one is for a signed copy of Agnes and . . . uh, something else. I found a lot of stuff when I cleaned, so maybe a nice blank journal or an unopened set of retractable colored Sharpies, or I could go to the grocery and get some Hostess cupcakes. Because I’m hungry for Hostess Cupcakes, that’s why.

Anyway, the contest. We need a name for the theme park, basically, but anything else your fertile minds come up with is good, too. Here’s the premise:

There’s a very small, hundred-year-old (maybe 150) amusement park in the middle of nowhere somewhere in the US. Probably called Wonder Land or something like that; we’re open on the old name. It’s bleeding money and the current owner is hanging on by his fingernails when a guy comes in and tries to buy it. No deal, it’s a family business. So he says, “Okay, I’ll buy half and we’ll use the money to refurbish the park.” The owner goes for it but there’s a catch: the new guy wants to change it to a paranormal theme and give it a new name. For some reason, the owner agrees, and the Tunnel of Love becomes the Bermuda Triangle or something like that.

For the free signed copy of Agnes, name that paranormal theme park.

And then if you want to go ahead and name rides and funnel cakes and that kind of thing just for the hell of it, feel free. The contest is for a great theme park name. And it closes, uh, next weekend. Because Bob is going to be gone all next week and won’t be able to make any decisions. So contest closes Sept. 28.

I have great faith in you all.

UPDATE:
Bob has just informed me that he’s leaving the first of this next week and he’ll be out for two weeks, so forget the 28th; we’ll close this on Monday the 24th so he can vote, too. Besides you’re getting tired.

I’m not offering up a name, but wondering if in your research you came across Knoebels? It’s an old fashioned amusement park in the middle of Southeastern PA. If you’re looking for a visual aid, that just might do it.

The only names we have are the first names of the hero and heroine and they’re likely to change. And neither one of them owns the theme park.

Wow, I’m completely blocked – I feel like I have a rep to uphold now. For the park name I can’t get past Area 52, that’s brilliant! But I love the theme, I keep going on mental sidetrips and naming things you haven’t asked for. Like a kiddie ride called the Transylvania Choo-Choo, and a high speed roller coaster called the Ghostbuster (“You must be this tall and corporeal to ride this ride”). And you can fill the park with little kids consuming revolting neon green slushies called Ectoplasms. (Then the heroine can have a terrible day and add tequila to one to make an Ectogasm… sorry, long day!)

Anyway, couple of months ago I saw a PBS show (I think) on the history of Hershey Park. If I’m remembering correctly, it started as a picnic area for Hershey workers. Then amusements and amenities were slowly added. At one point there was a bandstand, another grand building for dancing (literally a ballroom), and a truly enormous outdoor pool. Hershey Park is 100 years old this year. It might give you guys some ideas:

http://www.hersheypa.com/attractions/hersheypark/100th/photos.php

I’ll try to think of better suggestions later. Brain is fuzzy right now.

On September 20, 2007 at 4:45 pm Egads said...

Just to add, I realize Hershey Park is way bigger and better financed than what you were thinking. As you described your park it made me think of Dutch Wonderland (also here in PA) which was originally family owned. The website for it makes it look a lot more up-to-date than I actually remember the park. But according to their website “you can still milk Bossie the Cow, or ring a school bell, and visit with real live farm animals.” Their park isn’t nearly so old though.

I just thought the history of the park (i.e. the Hershey example) would affect what was still in your park today.

Okay, back to thinking.

Evelyn has a good point – paranormal covers a pretty wide range. Isn’t the heroine into Tarot cards, or is that another book? Because you could go with a non-cutesy name like Zodiac Park or Arcana World. Or just pick a sign – Capricorn or Aquarius would both work I think.

Is shaping and controlling the destinies of men paranormal enough ?
Maybe it could be if employees dressed up as ancient vampires, ghouls, ghosties, in togas etc?

I’m kind of distracted right now, but a lot of the turn-of-the (last)-century parks were named for the streets and streetcars that served them. How about a seemingly innocuous name that people have changed over the years in slang?

Like, Terrace Line Park, but people call it Terror Park or something now. I know that one’s kind of weak, but you get the idea.

I love old amusement park stuff. Have fun with Google!

No name suggestions from me, but here is a link to information you might find interesting about Excelsior Amusement Park on Lake Minnetonka, a place from my youth:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excelsior_Amusement_Park

I remember riding the Cyclone, the wooden roller coaster there. Once. I was about 10 or so and I screamed in terror the entire time. My mom claims that when I got off I was literally green. And then did what kids usually do when they turn green. I have now managed to mostly block the experience from my memory, but for years I had nightmares about that creaky old thing.

The park was torn down in 1973. But you know, depending on just how paranormal you plan to go, I could very easily picture it still up and running — on certain nights and summer weekends. Convincing enough that someone might be persuaded to invest . . . realizing too late that the park’s current visitors are as insubstantial and fleeting as the entertainment to be found there.

Thinking about the link to the past – if the location was the desert, it could well be an old gold mine workings/wild west town with tumbleweed rolling down main street. ‘Frontier land’ becomes..
Ghost town
Last home for the vampires
Last chance saloon which never closes

e.g. Dollywood’s Mystery Mine at Pigeon Forge, Tenn., may be the most highly themed new coaster, simulating a spooky, abandoned coal mine and drops 85 feet at 95 degrees. Top speed on the 2-minute, 30-second ride is 60 mph.

Of course, if it is set in the deep south, then we are into bayou territory. Voodhoo. the full works. Aka Pirates of the Caribean.. oh, Disney are already onto that one. Pity.

Well, if you’re looking to set the book in Ohio, you could always pretend that Russells Point’s Sandy Beach Amusement Park (AKA the “Million Dollar Playground”) never died. (Maybe the new owner sees it as an easy sale?) And Bob can walk the terrain in Ohio and you could probably squeeze in a visit to your hometown, because there’s really not too much terrain to walk… See, it benefits to both of you.

But the new name? I got nothing. But I should still win, because the contest ends on my birthday. I should get something nice for my birthday…

And completely off-topic, but at RomanceWiki there’s a sentence at the end of the article on Bet Me that makes it seem like Elvis the cat taught Min how to cook and that it’s okay to eat butter and carbs. Where can I get a cat that will teach me how to cook?

Jenny,
You described an amusement park in Easton, PA – now closed and involved in some sort of lawsuit (can’t remember what right now). You drive down a winding road (now near a Mall – but the park was there first)to find the park sitting alongside a small river, the Bushkill Creek. Hence the park’s name: Bushkill Park.

Easton also had an amusement park on an island in the middle of the Lehigh River – you could only get there by trolley. Island Park.

This is Mitzi channeling Stephen King:
An old park, no longer in use because of something hdieous that happened there long ago, but some interprising soul wants to reopen it, but someone or something has different plans.

Ahhhhh – the possibilities.

To keep it all encompassing, or at least not too specific:

Mystic Funland
Magic Valley
Sleepy Hollow
Fantasy Fun Park
Mystery Manor
Paranormal Park

A little more specific, but maybe not too limiting:
Cemetary Point
Graveyard Park
Ghost Town
Witch’s Landing
Haunted Pier
Undead Funland

And you definitely need to have a ride called Area 51. A great inside joke for those who read Bob, and still fitting for those who don’t.

And though it’s a traveling carnival rather than a park, I’m totally picturing the evil carnival from Bradbury’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes”, Cooger and Dark’s Pandemonium Shadow Show. Anyone who hasn’t read it or seen the movie, definitely do. It’s creepy and wonderful.

I kept trying to think of ways to put it in the Buffy context, since just about every imaginable paranormal being turns up (and I love Buffy), but I don’t think “Sunnydale” works well in a name for the same reason that “Summerland”, while lovely, seems to set the wrong (bright, cheerful) tone. It is, of course, ironic, in the original, but how would anyone know that?

How about something like “Darkest Dreams” or (to steal from another TV show) “Dark Shadows”? “Tardis” would be too much of a limited thing, and not really supernatural enough….

I grew up around Storybook Land and Adventure Land — so the old theme park name of Something Land is so appropriate. Florida has a very famous Gatorland.

I don’t know if the new name would have Land or World in it. They might go with the Bono or Jewell equivalent and use a single world title. In that case, I suggest Meteor, Galaxy or Milky Way. (Out of this world excitement for the whole family.)

Universal is already taken, darn it.

But… at Playland was an animated woman (made of plastic) that was huge – at least two stories tall – that laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed. Maybe you could have one of those at your old park that mysteriously starts laughing even though she is broken.

My grandmother lived on a hill overlooking an amusement park. She called it the “Now You See It…” because when the rides were running, it was a vivid view–a bright, frenetic city within a city. When it shut down for the night, it became a spooky black spot in the town, without even streetlights.

Speaking of vanishing… how about a Tunnel of Love-style ride called “The Eclipse”.

The park grounds could be open late for joggers or a walk-a-thon. Call it “Walk the Night” (from Hamlet’s father’s ghost).

Maybe you need a local zombie festival. They’re fascinating. Pittsburgh holds the world record for largest zombie walk, but Toronto, Vancouver, Sydney, and London are nipping at Pittsburgh’s disintegrating heels.

Have you ever watched the show Monster House (I think) where the guy came in and did these theme rooms in a week? Outside they would have a sign that said Damon Stern’s House Repairs and the sign would flicker so that it would say monster house. During the day, the sign could say Melvin Deville’s Wonder World, but at night, the only lights that would come up would be Devil’s World.

On September 21, 2007 at 8:41 pm Louisa said...

Wow. Lots of participation.

Only two really interest me:
Above and Beyond
Spirit of Adventure
(which could do for either park & save a bundle on signage & stationery.

You’ve mentioned a broad range of original park time, a hundred or a hundred fifty years. A hundred years ago we were still Victorians, which is to say, we were then just about as we are now:
madly materialistic, jaded, hypocritical, etc. Women back then had lots of time for hobbies, so crafts were big then as now. Like now folks were looking for something MORE and like now, there were lots of enthusiastic charlatans and suckers. So, the difference between then (1907) and now wouldn’t be such a much. You’d want to lay a veneer of technology over the table tipping (what I call seance fiction), ie, gizmos that detect ectoplasm & show it on a screen, videotapes of ghoulies, and so forth.

But around 1857 the big news was coming from India, and from the impending “Civil” war and westward expansion. What a concept. That would get you a totally different head: the idea of Anglo imperialism and victimization of the non-white. Lots of ideas about keeping an empire or a nation together, how far to go to impress your values on someone else, what constitutes a person, etc.

So, if this were my idea, I’d start with the periods of history I’m fascinated with and see how they’d mirror or resonate with the ending I have in mind. That’s how I’d choose my original park and its original theme, and go from there. Just me. Oh, and planning stunts and hazards for the characters. A theme park would be a dynamite place for the final battle. Oh, yeah. It could certainly be the Final Frontier for somebody. Or the Undiscovered Country.

Hi

You guys sure are creative!
I live in SoCal, close to Big Bear resort (home of many wildfires and bark beetles). There used to be a wonderfully horrible theme park in Big Bear called Santa’s Village. There were candy canes and Christmas trees everywhere, and a Santa’s workshop and a picnic area where all of the tables and seats were giant mushrooms. Santa and Mrs. Santa walked around all day and talked to the kids and hosted a parade in the afternoon. Maybe it could be turned into Vampire Village? With a King and Queen of the Vampires. Or if it started out called something like
Holiday Town- where each section of the park celebrated a different holiday- it could be changed to Halloween Town (sorry, Tim Burton) and each section of the park could be themed to a different supernatural entity(Vampire Village, Witch’s Hollow, the Monster Mansion, etc.)

Googling theme parks is way too much fun. You’ve really tapped into something interesting!

I’ve found you a park. It’s pretty weird. It was on Roadside America, of course:

Never Never Land in Point Defiance Park
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tips/getAttraction.php?tip_AttractionNo==9037

The first entry on that page is wonderfully pathetic–Humpty Dumpty gone missing, the old woman’s shoe run down, general disrepair. But the official page says it’s cleaned up and reopened. There’s a bunch of historical photos of hokey/creepy exhibits:
http://www.metroparkstacoma.org/page.php?id=241
and new pics on Flickr

Roadside America’s “Nearby Offbeat Places” are great too. And all this kooky stuff is sorta where Bob’s moving. He’ll have to check it out. From the photos, it looks deep in the woods. Near water. He can kayak to it… maybe.

I’m sure RoadsideAmerica has a lot of other oddball amusement parks. Though how can you beat the strange-factor of Humpty Dumpty, Billy Goat Gruff, and the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, deep in the woods next to an… equipment graveyard? logging museum?, a steam locomotive, a pioneer fort, and a zoo.

I’m keeping a pure mind and not looking at the comments yet.

Old park name: Raffle’s Entertainment Emporium.

New park name: Addam’s Family Fun Center (-: No, not really.

New park name: Beyond Entertainment

I think it would be really cool if the old park had some connections to the old-time spiritualists (Think Edgar Cayce and Madame Whats-her-name) at the end of the 19th century.

What would you eat at a paranormal theme park? Well, toasted marshmallow men comes to mind immediately. Squid tentacles (toasted again — this is a Japanese taste treat, and very delicious, really). Weiner ghosts. French fried fingers (no, they are really potatoes). Will o’ Wisps (cotton candy). Apples — first you peel them, and throw the peels over your shoulder to find the initial of your true love.

Rides: The Thriller Coaster. Ghost Ship (The viking ship swing ride). Haunted Tunnels. UFO (the little rockets that swing through the air merry-go-round style). The Grim-Reaper-Go-Round (black horses — replace benches with Grim Reaper statue carousel).

Games of chance, of course, and fortune-telling of at least three different kinds, a freak show, a house of weird dimensions (ala that something-Mystery-Area in South Dakota, where you stand up straight, but it looks like you are leaning backwards, etc.)

(-: On the off-chance I win, I would love a box of Hostess cupcakes. God, I miss stuff like that. Another copy of Agnes would be good, too. I don’t think my sister has it yet — she’s the kind who waits for paperbacks, practical girl.

This is such a weird coincidence. I am now (or becoming) the Amusement Park expert. I have adopted the Amusement Park project at Wikipedia, and I am re-writing the main amusement park article and tending to others. I am particularly interested in those old parks (150 might a little TOO old), how they came about, how they survived. The influence of the growth in leisure time (late 1800s-Cedar Point started in 1870s) + fascination with the mechanical (early 1900s) really lead to their growth… Anyway, let me know if you want some research help. My family is really tired of me dropping amusement park facts into the conversation! (I just read about a Tulsa amusement park, still family owned, that lost its lease and thus recently closed. It was not that old but it had a great weird ride that might be an inspiration/visual – Phantasmagorical.)

If the old owner’s family name was Lacey, then the new name could be ‘Arsenic and Old Lacey’.
Area 51 could be a cornmaze or hedge labyrinth or some such area you could disappear in.
Or you could make it creepy-paranormal, with the name something bland, ‘Normalville’ or whatever, and everything in it designed to look normal but just a little… off.
A huge belltower-slide where the bell rings when someone goes down it, but when you’re on the ride you see there’s no clapper to it (even though it moves like it’s ringing and you can hear it -hidden speakers).
A shoot-the-target game with targets slowly showing themselves from the scenery, you know, little bull’s-eyes on rabbits and deer and such, except that when you hit the wolf it turns into a dead human corpse.
‘New’ employees who absent-mindedly lick an ever fresh paper cut outside a booth with a bearded lady whose eyes blink sideways but whose beard is patently false.
Vendors with a subtly green tint to their eyebrows and eyelashes, or who’ve used tumeric on their skin to make it yellowish.
One of those machines that swirl coins around and around, only at randomly determined times, the coin placed in the slot is replaced with a metal decoy one and magnets below take it on a decidedly UN-usual spiral.
A funhouse set of mirrors, only instead of just the short-and-fat, tall-and-skinny reflection, you can see the shadow of something else there with you that doesn’t show up when you turn around.
A ride going through some dark sections with occasional corny glow-in-the-dark skeletons and such, but when you come out the cars are in a different order.

None of which help with names. Bah.

And you are amazing.

Dayle and Shawn beat me to Summerland, although I wanted it because of the Michael Chabon novel of the same name. No idea whether the mythos that grounds the story in that novel is drawn from reality or just Mr Chabon’s fertile imagination, but everything about the story feels like it’s what you should be going for. Is this what Office Wench Cherry meant?

(Btw, I am not suggesting anything underhand; there is no fairground in that novel or anything like that. It’s more the general tone and feeling of the book. It’s very American, which suits the kind of amusement park you’re going for (although that may just be the effect that baseball has on a European), and the supernatural is real and painful. You could die in those dreams).

I note that Diane TT said that she thought that the name was too yellow, too cheery, but the irony is exactly what I like about it. You need some contrast otherwise how will it become scary? Just having a closed fairground and then, wa-hey, the paranormal whoozits pitch up is simply too Scooby Doo.

Otherwise, I’d go for something totally baroque, although, err, inspiration fails me at present. I can only think of “The Amazing Zabar’s Land of Marvels”, which is clearly driven by the fact that I am ravenous since two of the words are associated with food. Those Hostess cupcakes are sounding really good right now.

Other than that, you could pick a name with a dual or changing meaning, perhaps when part of the sign disintegrated like in “Hollywood[land]“. Maybe that’s a bit too clunky?

Sorry, I am not being much help. All this clearly goes to show why I am best off reading books, and not writing them. Now, I must go and find some food, before I start looking for crumbs in the keyboard.

I’m reading Mortal Love and Descartes, so my ideas are sort of faerie/psychological today.

The Ghost in the Machine (for either the whole park or a particular ride)

If you don’t use it, someday I’ll have to write it into my own book. It’s a critique of Descartes’ notion of mind/body dualism (others have talked about it as outer vs inner, feeling vs thinking, being vs knowing, worldly vs divine).

Also
- ride the Faerie Wheel
- eat Deadwater Taffy
- play carny games & win your girlfriend a Magic 8-ball, a scary jack-in-the-box, or a ghost in a jar (I had one once–a luminescent blob). Or maybe Slime (remember that stuff? green goo, in a plastic garbage can, with optional eyeballs? here’s an old Mattel TV ad).

You may have already seen all these, or someone else may have posted the links, but I found these when i was looking for amusement park names:

http://www.geocities.com/le_cachot/home.html, which is an unofficial historical site.

This one has a great pic on the homepage, which unfortunately is only a thumbnail, doesn’t enlarge, and isn’t attributed. But it would definitely give a little kid nightmares. Also unfortunately, at least when I was there, almost none of their navigation worked.

And this one specializes in parks in Southwest Ohio! Just right for you, Jenny. Although, since you’re as inveterate a researcher as I am, you probably already know about it.

Flashback: One good thing about your office clean-along. I’ve finally got my research and reference books next to my desk, instead of in a box downstairs. The displaced books are stashed in the hall closet for the moment. Between my mother and I, I will easily fill that wardrobe-size closet with books from all over the house, the better to later sort them. /;+) Still glad you had that brainstorm.

Ooh, it just occurred to me. Have you read Glaveston by Sean Stewart. Aside from being a great book, it’s a good example of what happens when amusement parks go bad. /;+) Well, it’s really Mardi Gras gone bad, but it’s got that feel. I think you’d like it if you haven’t already read it. He does poker and natural medicine the way you’ve done pool or the con. ;+) Magical realism. Is that what you guys are planning, or real world?

I remember that woman! I think they called her Sal. And, yes, Office Wench Cherry, she scared the beejeebers out of me, so much that they couldn’t get me into the Fun House (where she was the official greeter) until I was in high school, and then only reluctantly.

Oh, don’t forget a house of mirrors. I think someone mentioned that.

Playland also had a place called The Bull Pup that sold tacos and burgers and fries. That could be changed to The Hound of Hell. Boy, their tacos were good. The real thing, not ground beef. I should prbbably go off now and pretend I’m not procrastinating.

Here are my suggestions and I’m leaving the Amusement/Theme Park off the titles because people don’t usually refer to something by the full name (i.e. Six Flags)

Secrets & Mysteries

The Antikythera Mechanism – I don’t know if you’re familiar with the back story but it’s the most complex mechanism that has ever been found at over 2,000 years old. Scientists have established it to be an astronomical calculating device. Derek Price, the late science historian at Yale University, concluded from his study that the mechanism was used to predict the position of the sun and moon on any given date. Since the “Antikythera mechanism” looks like a clocklike machine with many dials and at least 20 gears, I thought it could be a time portal of sorts. The psychic, Sylvia Browne, also claims that the “Antikythera Mechanism” is a product of the Andromeda aliens. If you’d like to better imagine what it looks like, John Gleave made a working replica.

Close Encounters

Grooved Spheres – a play on the grooved spheres of South Africa, this title might also determine some of the renovation changes to the park (as in being a copycat of the spheres, which according to eyewitness reports are divided into two categories, “one of solid bluish metal with white flecks, and another which is a hollow ball filled with a white spongy center). Keeping in mind the paranormal theme, there are alleged reports by Roelf Marx, curator of the Klerksdorp Museum, stating that one of the spheres has rotated of its own accord.

Black Holes – a similar title was mentioned in the beginning, so I don’t suppose this makes much of a difference, but I like it in the multiple form – more options and ins and outs to explore (also, Stephen Hawking has done extensive research on the subject)

The Amazing World of Tulpas – this concept would give you complete freedom to invent a world and characters, as well as, provide the readers with I’m sure really spunky and fantastic visuals. I, also, don’t know that Tulpas have been really well-explored in popular fiction. Ironically enough, there have been plenty scientific studies published on the subject. In case any of you are wondering, tulpas are entities created completely by imagination and it is the strong belief in their existence that keeps them later on sustained (examples are the Loch Ness Monster – or as I’d like to think of her Messie Nessie, don’t ask – and Sasquatch). Legends, stories, and very strong beliefs can create tulpas. Just imagine if all the Crusie/Mayer fans chose to invision a tulpa character, a new myth could be started…

If you are still searching for the right setting for the book, how about the Superstition Mountain range in Central Arizona? Aside from the appropriate name, there is also a legendary myth about lost treasure of a nineteenth century Dutchman.

On that note, the Grand Canyon is famous for bearing ancient artifacts. There are even sections there with names such as “Osiris Temple”, “Cheops Pyramid”, and “Buddha Cloister”. Never mind that most areas remain off limits to the public.

Also, since you usually like to use quotes in your books, I thought here is one you might like by Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter upon opening Tutankhamun’s tomb:

“Can you see anything?”
“Yes, wonderful things.”

Hello,

I like “Wonders of the World Park” where the major rides are themed after the ancient wonders of the world. A tunnel of love through the Great Pyramid of Giza, a haunted house through Mausolus’ Tomb, Flume Ride through the Hanging Gardens of Babylon etc.

For the switch to the paranormal, you could change the name and theme. “Ancient Underworlds” sounds spooky. Just add elements and characters from each culture’s underworld to the rides.

Take Care,

Do you remember the 80s cult movie The Lost Boys? There’s an amusement park in that which has this seething air of menace about it, in fact the whole town does (which is not surprising seeing as its heaving with vampires). The actual place is the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, which isn’t exactly brimming with originality namewise, but the movie might be good for some inspiration (or just to see Keiffer Sutherland when he was about 19!).

I replied and the internet ate it so you’ll have to take my word for it that I had some absolutely wonderful contributions :)

When I was little I used to go to an amusement park called “Ponchartrain Beach” in New Orleans. I’m sure it would look hokey now (if it still existed) but I loved it. There was a legend about their rickety old rollercoaster called The Zephyr – apparently some kid had his head cut off when he stood up while entering a tunnel. I wasn’t tall enough to go on it at the time and was grateful.

Someone else mentioned a giant laughing woman. Creepy. There was a giant laughing robot at a place I used to take my children to play and they always gave it a wide berth. Clowns too.

So, my suggestions: The Crypt, Desecration, The Dark (Zone), Close Encounter Zone, Alternate Reality, Parallel Universe or (my fav) Phantastic Funworld.

“Mind Warp” would be a good name for one of those centrifugal force / roulette wheel rides.

And I so want an ectoplasmic icee AND a karmakozie!

mq, cb – I love Michael Chabon’s Summerland, too, even though I can’t bear to watch baseball. I’ve listened to the audiobook each of the last two summers, and I may do it regularly. And it’s a lovely myth, but I guess I was looking for something more overtly eerie. But it is not mine to choose!

As to Robert Jordan, since eerie is the way I’d go with naming, maybe “The blight” is more the way to go.

Or, I am too lazy to look this up to see if someone else has suggested it, “The Goblin’s Market”, which I think is another widespread myth.

It’s true that there’s a huge range of paranormal possibilities (sparkly fairies to bloodsucking undead), and with your attention to detail, you might want it to underscore or help delineate something about the characters. Or have it serve multiple functions as motif, symbol, source of conflict, etc. Which makes me think that a useful solution would be to choose a theme (such as sparkly fairies or bloodsucking undead) and have every ride, attraction, and food reflect that theme, sort of building an omnipresent feeling of a web closing around the characters. I love a lot of the suggestions here, especially Area 51, which could be mined in lots of ways (including references to government conspiracies). Wyrd World is good too–the rune Wyrd (whose existence is debatable, and which has no symbol) stands for something that you shouldn’t know. Or you could call it Halloween (or Halloween Land, Town, Ville) and then have stuff reflect different aspects of Halloween. Halloween can be cheerful and fun or really, really creepy and scary. Little speakers hidden all over the park, with moaning sounds, chains rattling, Blair-Witch type sounds (“I’m so scared”). A ride called The Thinnest Veil, because that night is the thinnest veil between the two worlds. Creepy Hollow, Headless Horseman, the Wicker Man. Basically every creepy Halloween legend there is. But there could be people who refuse to see how sinister it is, and think it’s just a fun theme park.
