On the Road: LA
Aug222007
I would love to say something pithy and funny and insightful about LA, but mostly I have seen the airport hotel where I have been sleeping extensively since landing two days ago (two?) except for yesterday when Inkgrrl and her husband the Prince took Krissie and me to Little Tokyo where we had a fabulous time shopping. There were no deep thoughts at any time. Then today I slept all day again–forget everything you hear about trying to combat jet lag and just sleep the damn thing off–and Krissie and I watched As You Like It on HBO and didn’t much, although there were some amazing performances there and beautiful costumes, and I think Romola Garai may be Nadine from Faking It because she was marvelous. And now I really need to write but I’m going to sleep again. Then do a lunch meeting tomorrow, maybe dinner with my Famous Cousin but maybe not because he’s shooting something for Food TV and working late these nights, and then home tomorrow for one day before meeting Doom Boy for five nights of booksignings, including three more freaking plane flights. I am half-sick of airports, said the Lady of Jetlag. As for staying home to teach, much better to travel and not teach. I’ve been all over the world but mostly I’ve seen airports, highways, and hotel conference rooms because there’s always someplace else I have to rush off to, leaving wonderful, generous people behind saying, “Wait, we can show you things . . . ” but I have to go somewhere and do something else. So not going to do that any more.
Oh and if you want to see Little Tokyo, I think Krissie’s going to put the photos up on her blog since she’s the one who took them this time. But not sure. You want certainty, get me in about a week when I’m home again and my brains have settled. And even then, I’m confused. I think it’s something in the stars. Everything seems to be saying to batten the hatches from now until October and then sort out the debris then, so I’m thinking maybe that’s what I’ll do.
That and write a couple of books. Another good reason to get off the road and stop teaching. Books to write, music to listen to, dogs to pat . . . nothing but good times ahead. In October.
Addendum:
I forgot: Agnes and the Hitman hit the bookstores today. Anybody who was thinking about buying it, now is good. The rest of you just go back to whatever it was that you were doing. Oh and there’s a coupon for $3 off on the Crusie-Mayer website. Tell everybody. Thank you.

Already ordered Agnes- 2 to 3 weeks delivery time in the UK. And patience is a gift to the virtuous.;)
Sleep is a fab thing, especially after the plague. Hope you are recovered enough to enjoy the good food and better company. Take care, Ray-Anne

I’m in Pittsburgh for my job (I travel but I drive across PA) and there’s a B&N right down RT. 19 – a mile from the motel – so I will be there tonight after working on “my” book, a Nursing Polciy and Procedure book for our company. Agnes will be mine tonight.
And I agree about sleeping off jet lag – going from west to east is the hardest for me – it takes me days to recup.
Rest and write. If I can’t “hear” you again – well, at least I can “read” you.

Enjoying Agnes very much. Also did my part by making sure remaining supplies were extremely visible, nay eye-catching.

I’m with Roz: there’s a coupon?
Oh, well–it’s already here, bought yesterday (the 21st), and as soon as my wife wakes up I’ll snag it from the bedside table. (Hmmm… who do you think stayed up all hours reading it first?)

I always say I want to travel, but then I remember what traveling is like. There is something to be said for just staying at home. Then again, you’ve got more stories, great pictures, wonderful memories. Yeah, traveling is okay, just not when you’re crashing from it.
I bought my copy of Agnes (plus a few more). Filled out my coupon and sent it in. I also read the book yesterday. I loved it. No spoilers, but what a fantastic ride. Fun, whitty, explosive… just flipping fab! What a great book.
I also bought a few more copies of LOST GIRLS, which I totally loved and am sending it out as gifts to people. I love to give great books as gifts. Life doesn’t get any better than that.
Thanks for giving me a wonderful read. Jenny, you are the best!

So glad you’re getting the much needed sleep. Hard to write when your eyes are propped open with toothpicks.

As I indicated on his royal doomness’ blog, Agnes was GREAT! Something really special about the book. When done, I knew I’d read something fine.
I really don’t know how you and Bob are going to top it. One of the best damn books I’ve read this year. Thank You for sharing your wonderful gift with the pen.
Best, Deb.

I finished Agnes and the Hitman this weekend and thought I’d go right into reading Lost Girls but found I couldn’t do it. AATHM is one of those books that stays with you because of the wonderful character images, the action, the fast pace. It’s like watching a movie and saying you’ll have to see it again when it comes out in DVD because you’re sure you missed something, and you play the damn scenes over and over in your head during the day and then dream about them at night.
Now that I’ve had a breather I’m ready for LG but am sure it too will be a fast pace. I’ve read others comments on it and know it will be another “can’t put it down” read. I’ll have to prepare myself for that.
Wish I’d known you were staying over in L.A. for a few days. I would have come up and shown you some of the better parts of the city. If you don’t know the place it does seem large and flat and concrete, it’s no NYC with that wonderful central hub. But there are tons of unique little sections, good shopping, and wonderful restaurants. Hope the rest of your stay is good and that you shake off the jetlag. Remember to re-hydrate yourself, you’ll feel so much better when you flush out all the toxins. *grin*

I like the “Julia” school of travel, described in one of Sara Caudwell’s terrific books: instead of wearing yourself out trying to get to a lot of pre-determined “sights”, get where you’re going, then find cool things that are already there. So one spends most of one’s time enjoying, NOT in transit.
I had a tremendous time reading AatHM last night – my day was otherwise sort of blah and frustrating (my refrigerator is non-functional and I forgot to bring some paperwork into work and I found out about a farmer’s market in my area just in time to miss it). I’m going back through and re-reading, but I loved the characters and the twists and turns. Lots of charm and joy!
I tried to buy Lost Girls, too, but apparently the release date isn’t until 8/28 – the day after the Bob and Jenny show come to IL. I s’pose books can be signed for later purchase….

Just finished AATHM.
WoW!
Posted a semi-review. Can’t seem to say enough good things about it. Not surprising.
You two have totally outdone yourselves this time.
Thank you so much. You have no idea what a breath of fine Southern air you breathed into my life, at just the moment when I needed it most.

Agnes and the Hitman:
Just got my copy at the B&N in Cranberry, PA (near Pittsburgh). There is now only one left on that B&N shelf.
Can you say “second printing” – one can hope.

I went to my Borders to get it today and they hadn’t even gotten it in yet! I was so mad…went to another Borders–they didn’t have it either. I was going to spend all day today reading it, now I won’t have time again until next weekend (I dont want to read it in peices), IF the bloody borders has GOTTEN IT IN BY THEN!

I just finished Agnes and loved it. You and Bob really did a great job. Great characters, great plot…it just zipped along. I loved the twist with Shane’s professional competition. I could go on and on, but then I’d start giving spoilers, and I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. Such a fun read though. Kudos
