On the Road: The Brisbane B&B

Aug142007

So Krissie and I are in Brisbane in a B&B and it’s quirky and bizarre and really fun and has the best kitchen ever.

BrisbaneKitchen

Not that we’re cooking but it’s really amazing. And lots of balconies.

BrisbaneBalcony

And birds that make strange sounds and a fabulous view of the Brisbane skyline.

BrisbaneSkyline

In other words, it’s a B&B that doesn’t hate us.

We spent the day at the Queensland University of Technology with the best people and were way too indiscreet so that’ll come back to haunt us, but we had a great time anyway. Glen Thomas is a fantastic host and his students, our fellow writers, were wonderful, and a good time was had by all, especially by Krissie, who was outrageous in Australia, not an easy thing to be. Also, I think she’s moving here. I think Australia is great but Krissie is in love with the entire country.

Then we went out and ate Greek food with fabulous people like Kate and Sandra and Elle

KateSandraElle

And Louise (the blonde to the right) who makes fabulous Pavlova and is a wonderful potter

SandraGlenLouise

so she made Krissie and I mugs, and mine looked like Glen

and a good dinner was had by all.

Really, come to Brisbane. It’s lovely.

The B&B looks great and hey, at least they didn’t put a stuffed kangaroo or a Tasmanian devil on your bed.
Photos look wonderful, and that Greek salad is making me hungry. Hope you get a little time to explore and that N.Z. is everything you hope it will be … maybe Krissie will change her mind and want to move there.

If Scotty would just get the darned trasporter fixed, I’d be right there. I love the look of that B&B. I could easily live there. ;+)

Glad you’re having such a good time. You need some undiluted fun.

Oh wow. Love the B&B. Would it be odd to go all the way Down Under just to stay there?

And, Jenny? Give the Krissie the camera for a change so we can see some pictures of you.

I’ve only been to Brisbane, California. It’s not the same. Really. Plus, I don’t think it has any B&Bs, let alone a view of the San Fransisco skyline.
The heck with it. I’m off to Aussie land!

Damn. Can’t even spell the name of the city of St. Francis. That’s a sure sign that it’s time to stop typing.

Mary, Brisbane does too have a view of the SF skyline. You just have to be up on the hill. However, it’s a tad windy there, so you have to tie down your pets and any humans under about 120 pounds, or they might blow away. My Uncle lived directly on the top/edge of the hill, so I know.

Wolfie might find it interesting, Jenny. They had a dachsie, and he loved flying at the end of his leash. Really. Like a little SuperDog. All he needed was a cape.

Thanks for posting a photo of Brisbane’s very own version of Alan Rickman and his trusty mug! You and Krissie come back soon!

I live about an hour north of Brisbane or Brisvegas as it’s known locally..I’m up in the hinterland..and yep Brisbane is quirky alright in all sorts of ways.

Visually one of building I love is on the way to QUT uni… there is an old museum which I’ve heard described architectually as progressive eclecticism…now that’s quirky.

Jenny if get the chance see if someone can bring you/or you find your way to the New Farm Deli where they have this rockyroad 70% couverture dark chocolate, turkish delight and pistachcio nuts plus a bit of marshmellow…

I’m glad you’re enjoying it all.The birds that make funny sounds is so relative… when I visited a friend in Florida I was wondering what on earth was making such a racket… it was a bluebird.lol.

My friend Kristen told me she had a wonderful time at the dinner. And if I know Kristen that include a fair consumption of red wine…

Happy to hear you are still having a wonderful time.

Yes, the B&B is adorable, specially the kitchen.

Now I want a cash register in MY kitchen, too!

Such lovely folks you are meeting, ladies.

I just wanted to say that I had a fabulous day with Jenny and Krissie at QUT for our Masters group Masterclass. And at dinner. Unfortunately none of my friends who read this blog believe I was at the dinner as there are no photos of me. That’ll teach me to keep hiding from cameras.
Seriously tho, I had a fantastic day and enjoyed spending time with you both and learning sooo much more about writing – if only I could decipher my notes…
Look forward to seeing you both in San Francisco and welcoming Krissie as a “new Australian” when she moves downunder.
Catherine – the real one – the one who lives on the Gold Coast and is a member of Glen’s Masters class.

WELCOME TO BRISBANE! I’m so glad that it’s redeeming B&Bs for you. It looks like you’re staying in Highgate Hill or West End? which is one of the best parts of Brisbane, I think (and close to where I live in Annerley.) Very glad to hear you’re enjoying yourself.

So it’s just Bob that makes B&B’s hate you. Blame him, he’s halfway around the world.

Glad you’re enjoying Australia. And don’t bother to use the kitchen, cooking is over-rated.

My god, it’s gorgeous! And it looks like that at the tail end of winter??? Forget snow-birding — I think I want to move to Brisbane when I’m ready to retire.

What a lovely place — thanks for sharing!

Lovely looking B&B. Looks like you’re having a good time. At least I assume you are since we haven’t seen any pictures of you in this.

You deserve to have fun but I must warn you to get a lot of rest because it looks like you are coming home to a badly depressed Bob. That is the general consensus of those who have read the workshop lately. I am sure a swift hit with the keyboard should smarten him up. Just kidding. ;)

It was Highgate Hill, Sheena.

We’ve actually had pretty crap weather for the 2 days Jenny and Krissie were in Brissy. A little overcast and cooler – the Sydney weather was much nicer.

Okay – the comments posted before I was finished.
Just wanted to say I’ve finished Agnes – read it until the end after the kids went to school. And it really is fabulous. Loved it, loved it.
I will cherish my signed copy forever. Will have to bring it with me to SF next year to get Bob’s signature too.

Thanks Erica – will email you.

Thank you so much for coming to visit us, Jenny and Krissie! Hope you had as wonderful a time as we did.

The pics are just wonderful– and have immortalised our fearless leader. Alan Rickman all the way.

Oh, by the way, hope the chocolates went down well, and that you had a great time in NZ.

All the best,

Melynda.

Oh, today I found my glasses. The pictures are even prettier today.

And the “cash register” is a breadbox with something tall behind it. Dang!

Well, I’m sick as a dog and just gave a presentation with no make-up and no deoderant because I overslept, so trust me, pictures of me at this point would not be good.

Thank God New Zealanders are so understanding.

The B & B is called Franklin Villa (they have a website with pictures if anyone would like to see more), in Highgate Hill.

Jenny & Krissie are the most wonderful, fabulous visitors, who should be encouraged to come to Australia as often as possible.

I too have finished Agnes: it’s a work of sheer brilliance.

See? This is why we love Glen. He has such excellent taste in B&Bs and books.

Jenny, so sorry to hear you’ve not been well. New Zealand is a great place so I’m sure they’re looking after you.
I had a wonderful time in your workshop at the conference and here in Brisbane with both you and Krissie. Such a privilege. I’ve hardly stopped writing since.
I’m so glad you liked the mug. I hope it reminds you of ‘good times’ and nothing but.
I’m looking forward to getting my hands on Agnes, I was too slow at the conference. And we do love Glen even though he got the last copy and gleefully showed it to me. Since he said it was a work of brilliance I am prepared to forgive.
Take care and I hope you’re feeling better soon. Hi to Krissie.
