On the Road: Sydney
Aug82007
I had a long post done with five photos, and then, in the midest of jet lag, managed to delete most of it. So I went to bed.
But now I’m up again and I can’t remember what I wrote about. Twenty-five hours of travel time. Krissie being outraged her card wasn’t in her camera so she could take pictures at LAX:
So she took my iPhone and got this of me, bleary-eyed, no make-up, after three hours of sleep the night before and a day of frantic cleaning, plus brunch at the iHop because Krissie loves iHops (so do I) and Vermont doesn’t have any.
Then we flew to Auckland by Air New Zealand which is a great airline, at least for this trip, and since I had the iPhone, I took this:
This is the rest of the post, the part i didn’t delete:
Then we arrived at the Auckland airport, motto “We don’t have to tell you what gate the plane is leaving from.” Beautiful airport but lousy about gate info. And from there we flew to Sydney which is amazingly beautiful with perfect weather, and checked into a hotel that is also amazing, and then had lunch with Alison Ahearne and gossiped about the industry and forgot our cameras, so Krissie made me promise I will always have some form of camera with me (the iPhone was back at the hotel recharging itself).
Then Krissie crashed and I came back to update the blog. Yes, I know this is boring, you trying catching three different flights and flying half way around the world. Interesting isn’t really an option; you just want to survive. But it was well worth it. Here’s the view from my hotel room:
And now I too am going to crash. Because as you can probably tell from this blog entry, there are no brain processes working for me at all at this point. Tomorrow I’ll do an entry with a theme or something. Whatever it is that makes a decent blog entry.
And since I’m with Anne “I want a picture of everything,” there will be pictures, too.
And then I took another picture of the view from my hotel room since it was dark. And beautiful.
And now it’s morning and I’m still bleary-eyed but we’re going to go walk all over Sydney anyway.
I know, this is an awful post. There’s no there there. It’s like the postcards your relatives send you when they’re on vacation. “And here’s Aunt Krissie, discovering she left one of the kids at home.” Sigh.
The conference starts on Friday. I should be hitting on cylinders by then. For right now, I’m alive and almost not jet-lagged but I have nothing of interest to report. Twenty-five hours of travel time. Add another ten onto that for Krissie (she had one hellacious layover in Cincy). It’s a miracle we’re still sentient. Oh, and it’s Thursday here but it’s Wednesday where we used to be. I don’t think about it much or my head will explode. But in many days, I will fly to LA in the evening and land in the morning of the same day. That’s when my head WILL explode.
See? I should not post when I’m jet-lagged.

Congratulations on getting past the second-to-worst part of the trip. The plane ride there. The worst part is the plane ride back. All the pain of travel without the anticipation of the event-to-come. Get your feet back under you and have fun. No worries about the blog content. We are happy to just see the pictures. Meanwhile, I think I’ll head on over to Bob’s website and bug him for a while.

If it’s helpful, what you’re looking at is Darling Harbour. Make sure in your exploring that you go to The Rocks, and to Glebe. Glebe is harder to get to, but totally worth it. Wonderful book shops and old (well, in Australian terms) terrace houses and trees.

Congratulations on surviving the trip. Now try to chill out and enjoy it. It’s spring there, right? You are missing out on 100 degree temperatures. It’s worth hanging in the air for 25 hours. And I must say that Air New Zealand looks pretty cool to me.
Oh, and you are the first person I know (sort of) who has an iPhone. I have to ask, are they as cool as they look?

AND, we are really enjoying the changes to crusiemayer.com and the AATHM stuff. You left us with some really nice toys to play with. Thanks, mom.

Jealous!! Australia, what looks like first class because no airplane I’ve ever been on looked like that. AND an iPHone??? Who cares about jetlag! No, seriously, rest up and enjoy what you can while you can. It really is f***ing hot in Ohio. I was just in Columbus Saturday visting inlaws. I’m a glutton for punishment. LOL. And it’s hot here too. (virginia) Very beautiful pictures. Enjoy!

Oh, I have something to look forward to on the way back: Five days on the road with “We’re All Doomed” Mayer. That starts the day after I get home.
Yep, that’s Darling Harbor. Walked all over it yesterday. Well, at least to the restaurant and up and down the quay. Today, Krissie is taking me shopping, which means she says, “We’re going here,” and I say, “Good.” Also there’s some kind of wildlife whatsis right outside the hotel, so I think we’re going to see kangeroos. Because tomorrow, we’re the kangeroos; the conference starts.
It’s winter here, but winter is wonderful, about sixty degrees except everything’s in Celsius so it’s about 20C. Lovely.
The iPhone. I love it. It has a few flaws, like no way to delete all the e-mail at once, but otherwise, it’s the best gadget EVER. And it takes great pictures. And you really can watch video on it, the screen is superb.
Shhhh. Mollie made me promise not to tell anybody about the new CM site until she’s finished with it. It’s not done. She’s still tweaking things. Don’t tell ANYBODY. The outtakes probably aren’t any fun until you read the book anyway.
And now, off to do Krissie’s bidding.

From the view out your window, that looks like the same hotel we stayed at when we were in Sydney. Try to see the botanical gardens while you’re there (if you have time). The bats are not to be missed. lol
One of my CP’s is attending the conference! She’s from Tasmania and a fabulous, fabulous writer. Say hi to Babe King if you meet her!!!

What a beautiful view — thanks for sharing. Enjoy your trip. If you can think of anything you’ll need for the Doom-tour, just post it, and I’ll try to have it availible in IL. Best wishes!

Wow Jenny, you look fantastic for bleary eyed. I’m glad you’re soaking it all in and taking photos of every single thing. You’ll be glad you did when you’re home trying to remember everything. Enjoy.

I just did that time travel thing (from Japan to L.A.) where you leave on Thursday at 1PM and arrive on Thursday at 11:30AM after traveling what feels like a biznillion hours and I Haven’t Actually Recovered Yet. (But I have unpacked, so that’s something!)
Have fun in Australia! (I’d be looking for yarn shops, but that’s me.)

The pictures are worth a thousand words. Or at least 742 words. Looks like an absolutely beautiful place to be!

What a gorgeous view from your room. Isn’t that the Opera House to your right? It is even beautiful at night.
Have a great time. See as much as you can while you’re there. Enjoy the conference too. You have just made a bunch of Down Under Cherries very, very happy.
Maybe Bob will let you sleep through LTD for five days. Not!

Hey, this is just like being there. People always say they had a great flight and their hotel was wonderful and their room had a great view. BUT they don’t say they were travelling for a whole day and they’re almost gaga with fatigue. Those are the important things. And the random pictures. ;+)
Sounds like you’re going to have a ball. Enjoy.

No, no, the Opera House is on Circular Quay, not Darling Harbour. Different section of the Harbour altogether (but it is still beautiful at night). I don’t think it’s easy to appreciate the sheer size of Sydney Harbour until you’ve actually seen it (but I haven’t really seen any harbours to compare it to – it could be tiny in world terms for all I know).

Site, what site? You didn’t spill anything, we snooped it out on our own. And there’s more stuff coming? Cool!
I’m trying to avoid buying an iPhone because (a) I don’t really need it (have a phone, iPod and PDA alread) and (b) AT&T is not my carrier. But everytime I see the commercials I weaken.

Hey Jenny? About those spoiler outtakes? Just exactly how spoiled are we talking here?
Slightly spoiled, like a little girl who begs and begs for a pony in the backyard, only to wake up on Christmas Day and find she’s been signed up for riding lessons on the understanding that she keep her room clean and help around the house?
Or thoroughly gone rotten-bad spoiled, like mayonnaise that’s been sitting in the back of the frig for so long that it’s developed a thriving and quite intellectually advanced culture of bacteria?
Um… not that /I/ ever let my fridge go for that long… purely a hypothetical example, that one.

Someday. Enjoy!

My husband just came home from Australia a week ago.
I have Tim Tans and Cherry Ripes. If I would have known that he could get me a copy of Agnes and the Hit Man, though, I would have compelled him to stay another week.
